Anyone else notice this? Guitarists are everywhere, but drummers are like freaking leprechauns or something.

i know what u mean, and its way harder to find GOOD drummers, there's lots of those guys who think they "have" talent and what not, its annoying

What's even harder is finding a good drummer.

I find a lot of drummers are a little too egotistical. Not personally, but musically. They'll play a fill at the end of every phrase, try to play cool complex beats all the time. Sometimes it's great, but sometimes the drums just need to be in the background. That's how you find a good drummer. Don't look for someone who can play the coolest fills, look for someone that can/will blend when they need to, and be right up front when they need to.

Or just find someone who is sick at the drums and build your sound off them... then again those guys are even more rare than a great drummer. Really only Stewart Copeland from the Police, Darren King from Mute Math, and possibly Carter Beauford from Dave Matthews Band come to mind.

I agree with this statement so much.

Very true.

although I agree, I'm just surprised Mutemath's drummer made it to this list of 3 with Carter and Stu.

I agree with drummer's. I've played with atleast 10, and none of them see to see the music as a whole band, just the music... except for one. But he won't join my band. So I don't count him. lol

Check out Darren live in person and see if you still agree. Studio recordings never do good drummers justice, you just have to see it.

regardless of how good you are, good singers are almost as difficult to find as good drummers, the main reason being that most trained singers don't opt to perform for rock bands.

on the whole, i'd say the pool goes like this (in terms of quantity):

guitar players>guitar players that play bass>bass players>singers>drummers

ha. I want to find a really good singer. we are cured is right, Most singers that are trained don't go try to be in a rock band. they should though. I don't understand how finding drummers is hard. i guess i do because a lot of drummers in my area cant really drum, they just have a drum set. theres a band I know who's old guitarist is now there drummer. they are horrible... yet somehow they have 2 gigs lined up..
I wish there were more really good bassist. People that are actually good at your instruments, come to Detroit. lets make a super group. haha seriously.

Hey, I'm new to this forum, but I'd like to give my first bit of input in this thread

I think we are cured had his little line of most to least right, but I think even more rare than Drummers or Singers is Singers that can sing AND play an instrument well. Like Sing and guitar or sig and bass...even rarer is a singer/drummer

But yeah otherwise, Drummers are mad hard to find...or...at least GOOD drummers. Ones who, as already said, can blend into a band rather than take it over...but of course some drummers just plain off suck, hah...so yeah....sorry if this post is too long haha, yeah, how's that for a first post?

Yeah, we only had a problem finding our bassist and our singer. So we just had our friend pick up a bass and get to work. We were lucky enough to have a singer. Plus I guess I recently found out, I can scream pretty good myself. I don't know. But Yeah, I'd say the singers are harder to find, because anytime you're near a school or something, you can either find drummers, or people posing to be drummers. School bands are good places to look for drummers too. Although you wouldn't really believe it, it's true.

It's hard to find anyone who's actually good at the instrument they play and that will fit whatever sound you're trying to achieve.

But yeah, it's pretty hard to find drummers and bassists 'round here.

This hits way too close to home. Me and my other guitarist met with a drummer a month or two ago, and I guess some might argue that he was talented, but his beats drew way too much attention to themselves. Needless to say, he will not be joining our band.

When it comes to finding good singers to be in a band, my philosophy is that if your instrumentalists are merely "ok" as singers, that's fine, because they will (and I repeat, "they will") improve with time. That is, unless you're trying to start a boy band or something, in which case they need to be at the top of their game right from the start, because in that style of music so much more emphasis is placed on vocals. But when I think about a lot of my favorite bands, there aren't very many that seem to rely on the quality of their vocals. In my band, me, my other guitarist, and my bassist are what I would call "decent" singers.

And that's good enough for me.

finding a drummer isn't hard. finding one who won't bail on you after 2 jam sessions is damn near impossible. we've gone through 3 of them in the past 2 months

I can think of some singer/drummers that are sick. And its funny cuz most of em that can do it aren't just awesome at one or even both, but at like guitar, writing, everything. Aaron Gilespie (underoath, the almost) Don Henley, Phil Collins, whoever the guy from Atreyu is. All 4 of us in my band can sing, and in the least arrogant way possible, we're all pretty good at it. Of the other 3, one is All-state and the other 2 could be if they'd ever try out. Im the drummer so I doubt ill ever sing anyway, unless I can learn to do it while drumming which is uber-hard. Im a fairly decent drummer, but, no dice, I'm taken. I understand what u mean by being egotistical musically. It's hard to not try and play to your fullest all the time. I used to be bad about that, but I'm getting better about it.

That guy is straight up sick. That snare solo at the end was amazing. Ive been playing marching snare a lot longer than I have trap set and i'm in awe. I wish that vid was in time so u could see what all he was doing. some of it, there was so much goin on that I couldn't tell from just listening.
