It's about goddamn time someone talked about this on here. I think people need to be told the graphic details, this needs to be on the news all day everyday, it needs to be beaten into everyone's head so that they'll never be able to go back into denial about the horror of this kind of thing. I see people joke about rape on here all the time, when some girl pisses them off they say "I hope she gets raped", to me rape is worse than murder and it happens way too often. Honestly, the rape statistics in this country are embarrassing, what's worse is that we all just kind of accept it.
I was watching some people talk about this on the news and some woman called in and tried to blame the girl's parents, as if it was their fault their child got gang raped, then she tried to say the girl was acting in a way that was kind of asking for it...what I dont understand is how anyone is comfortable even saying that shit out loud.

For once, I don't think its stupid to say "I blame video games for this." I personally know two people who were raped and it fucking disgusts me that people talk out loud like that. I've caught myself saying it and I immediately take it back, because its a serious issue.

If an 11-year-old is gang raped, you don't refer to it as "having sex." You don't try to place the blame on her by talking about the fact that she wears make-up and dresses in a grown-up way. Nor do you kick up a fuss about how the lives of the perpetrators will be ruined.
No-one 'asks' to be raped. Why can't people see that?

This is such a troubling trend that's rising in the U.S. There's always been people putting the blame on the other party, but how one person, let alone an entire town full of shitbrains can put blame on an 11 year old girl in this situation makes my stomach knot.
You can only hope that people will soon wake up and realize that the things that come out of their mouths are not only disgusting, but are also making this whole country fall backwards in social evolution.

Disgusting crime. I want to know how it comes into peoples heads to do something like this? How do they justify it to themselves without being overwhelmed by how reprehensible it is (I know that's to state it lightly)? And with whatever answers we have to those questions how do we create a world where shit like this doesn't happen? I don't mean a world with any universal morals per say, but one where people respect basic human rights. I figure to most people here we probably would never even actually consider doing anything this terrible.
Like what's wrong with people that so many bad things are even possible? And how do we avoid making sweeping generalizations about the world when these things seem to happen everyday...there are so many questions to ask I don't even know where to start.
Off to work for 14 hours now...maybe I'll see some good responses when I get back.

an 11 year old is still a child, the mugshots of those goones, some of them look like they're 20 or something. completely disgusting. every human being as flaws, and when certain flaws are extracted in this sort of manner it disturbingly eats my stomach.
best wishes to the victim and her family, though i know my words won't ease the pain the slightest. i fear shit's just gonna keep getting worse and worse.

Coming from a person that has sat in court with guys just like these fellas, it usually stems from their family. They were either molested as a child and therefore had no sexual boundaries instilled in them or they had terrible/absent fathers and feel they must compensate with power. Like they say, rape is all about power and control and not so much the sexual act or "getting off." These assholes wanted to feel like men by overpowering an 11-year-old to compensate for whatever is missing in their life.
Sadly, they pass on their own problems and then some to the victim. One could argue it's an act equal to or worse than murder because it changes the victim completely and sometimes take the rest of their life to cope.

There are other types of rapists, but I wouldnt be surprised if a few of the ones in this case were doing it for control and the others did it just because everyone else was doing it. To me that last kind is worse.
And if you ask me, I will definitely say it's worse than murder. It doesnt help that the law seems so lenient when it comes to rape, a few years in jail and being on some website is like a fucking slap on the wrist compared to the punishment for murder.

Maybe you got this from living in a ghetto area? It makes more sense to try and find out why you would think this.
Again, did I say that all men are rapists? No. If you have an object to penetrate with (which for most men, it's a penis) and someone to penetrate, you have the potential to rape. You are taught from a young age about stranger danger, if men werent potential rapists, people wouldnt teach their kids no to talk to strangers. When you get older you're told not to walk your dog or jog alone especially in the dark, if men werent potential rapists, nobody would even think about worrying about that kind of thing. You're told that when you're at a bar and a man offers to buy you a drink, you have to follow him to the bar and watch him, and you're told to never leave your drink alone out of sight just in case someone tries to slip something in the drink. Why would you have to worry about that if men werent potential rapists?
I've said this before and I'll say it again, there's nothing wrong with my thinking. Women and children are taught to be wary of strangers, because the people around them are potential rapists. Unless you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the stranger man offering to show you his new puppies in the back of his van isnt going to rape you, you have to keep your guard up and think that there's a chance that person might rape you. The same goes for women, but since you're more likely to get raped by a man and because men make up 99% of the rapist population, I just went with saying that men are potential rapists. Where I grew up doesnt change any of that.
JoeLovesMO

Because it's simply so...hyperbolic. I won't bother trying to change your opinion, but you do see why pretty much everyone considers what you said to be a laughably ridiculous statement, right? Okay, in the likelihood you don't, it's because when you say it, it comes across as you actually believing that any guy could (or that it's even likely that), at any time, try to rape you or another woman. And, you know, it also doesn't help when you call guys disgusting.
Yeah, of course pretty much anyone has the potential to perpetrate something as heinous as rape (see: the fucks in this story), especially if you don't know them (which of course doesn't have to be the case, as in your situation), but shit, we all have the potential to be/do anything, like Gaugzilla said. We all also therefore have the potential to not be and to never be rapists. But whatever, I'm sure you'll just disagree with everything I said.
Anyway yes, what happened in this god-forsaken Texan town is abhorrent, and I hope these guys get what they deserve, if not more. And hell, why not plan a nuclear weapon test for the town, too?
JoeLovesMO
03/12/11, 03:57 PM
I read the first line of your posts half-heartedly then assume the rest is unnecessarily angry ramblings.
The fact that you think I try to continue an argument is lulzable. Like anyone on this board, someone says something related to you or something you have an opinion on (normally a batshit crazy one) and you will argue until they stop posting or say you're right. So yeah, you're right Zion, all men are potential rapists.
Becasue: 1) men have penis' 2) Rape is a thing that exists and can happen 3) Because it has happend before.
But oh yeah, you forgot that humans are not animals! We have control over our actions! Huzzah! 99% on men wouldn't want to rape someone and never will. And so only a tiny percentage are potential rapists.
EDIT: To Zion.

Both sexes are potential rapists Yes, you said; however, your continually sexist remarks are astounding. You're an idiot.
Do you ever stop to think that maybe guys don't report rape as much? What guy wants it to be known that HE was raped by a woman??
I can tell your intellect is very small and sort of big picture effect would more than likely go over your head.

I do actually believe that any guy could rape me or someone I know. I dont think or believe that every single guy I know or every single guy I ever come across will rape me. If you have an object to penetrate someone with, you have the ability to rape. I dont see how that's so laughable, when you have a daughter, are you going to think it's laughable to warn her about strangers or anyone trying to touch her? Are you going to think it's laughable to warn her not to go out alone? I dont see how it's ridiculous at all.
I'm tired of everyone's inability to realize that "potential" doesnt mean "definitely will". I dont see people ending up in an uproar when someone says that people have the potential to be murderers. I'll be the first one to say that people have the potential to do absolutely anything possible (not kick a football to the moon).
which of course doesn't have to be the case, as in your situation
what situation are you talking about?
edit: and yes, I have called men disgusting. I've called men on this website disgusting on this website, especially when I'm in a thread about an actress or a female singer and all of the comments are extremely sexual in nature, and when none of them talk about her talent. But where in this thread have I said that men are disgusting?

You pulled that 99% out of your ass, how about using the actual statistic.
AGAIN, I NEVER SAID THAT ALL MEN ARE GOING TO RAPE. I've gone out of my way to say that. Good for you, you have self control, I didnt say anything about anyone's control or lack of it though.

Like many other people have said during the course of you throwing my statement in my face over the past few weeks, everyone has the potential to do anything, that includes murder. I have the potential to kill babies (so do you), that doesnt mean I'd ever even think about harming a child. You and I both have the potential to be the leaders of our countries, that doesnt mean either of us will be. You have the potential to be a father, you have the potential to be a great one or a god awful one. Good for you, you have self control, I didnt say anything about anyone's control or lack of it though.

All Women have the potential to drown their babies in the bathtub.
Every car has the potential to drive on to the sidewalk and kill you.
Every head of state has the potential to lead their nation into genocide, war, massacre, depression, etc.
I know that you've had negative experiences with men, and that every time I quote you, it's always the "ur stupid" followed by the "no u cheated on your girlfriend", but if you go through life assuming the worst out of people, you're going to live a fucking shitty life.
As for this: Are there details we don't know? Obviously this girl didn't want to get gangbanged by 6 dudes, but is it possible she wanted to have sex with one or two of them (Remember it's fucking Cleveland, Texas: hicktown supreme), and then a couple more showed up, leading the townspeople to think she wanted sex, just not that much.
Either way, there should be no discussion whether who to blame. Rape is rape, period.

I'm sure (pray) the community's response to the story isn't just a reflection on how they feel about the girl but the inate need that we all have to try to justify/explain evil.

Zion is right. Consider the conversations one hears with the average group of males regarding sex or even rape; in terms of the former, it usually involves the idea of making a woman submissive in order to get sex, which is an exercise of power just as rape is, and in conversations about rape, it involves the degree to which one can force themselves on a woman without it being rape. Furthermore, in this society, a woman has to go through the world always on guard that someone may assault them, even those closest to them because that is who rapes are typically perpetrated by. What's more, rather than men being educated not to rape, women are told that they must adjust their behaviour, otherwise they are asking for assault. Some of the men in this thread are taking what is said way too personally, rather than understanding that the analysis is of objective power relations as a result of sexism in our society. And yes, there are women that commit rape, but the vast majority of sexual assaults are perpetrated by men and this is directly tied to the patriarchal nature of our society.

There's a denial that goes on with these crimes, it seems to be a coping mechanism. You hear about little girls in Africa being raped because of a reckless myth that virgins cure AIDS, it gets talked about on the news for 15 seconds, people think "oh that's horrible" and then they move on and forget about it so that they can her hours of coverage about Charlie Sheen or Sarah Palin. The rape statistics in this country are embarrassing and we all just ignore it. It's a joke, we talk about preventing becoming a victim but not preventing becoming the abuser. We rarely talk about rape or abuse, the effects, the warning signs, the severity of it all, because nobody wants to even imagine the horror of it all. We just sweep it all under the rug so that we can pretend like we've advanced, like we arent half as barbaric as we used to be.
It's all treated like it's no big deal, we even allow and encourage people to joke on this site about it. The punishment is a slap on the wrist, I've seen drug dealers get harsher punishments than rapists. There are seriously tv specials on some drug addict exhibiting very normal drug addict behavior, but we cant spend that much time and energy showing rape for what it really is. I get it, nobody wants to have to sit around and really think about all of the things they did wrong while raising the next generation, they dont want to think they're partially responsible for the rape culture we're tumbling deeper and deeper into.

I definitely agree that it should be a more discussed topic (included in the whole anti-drug/violence programs or education most high-schools have to some degree) and the whole joke thing is definitely questionable, but to me that's just the same issue as 'I was about to kill someone,' 'you're retarded,' etc etc. There are a ton of commonplace phrases like those which people almost never use literally, but they do occasionally stir up drama. I'm not entirely sure what my opinion is on that, so I'll just leave it.
As for preventing people from becoming abusers, I don't know what more you would have done on that front. I think the whole 'never hit a female (if you are a guy)' thing is engrained almost completely in Western culture, almost too much sometimes in my opinion. We might never be told flat out, 'don't rape girls/women', but the anti-violence thing pretty much implicitly teaches that.

I chose them carefully enough not to imply that men arent victims of sexual abuse.
and this thread shouldnt be about fun. It should be about killing the denial that lives in this culture like a parasite, preventing us from realizing how acceptable objectification has become.

I know that the jokes arent going to make someone go out and rape, but the fact that they're laughed at or accepted is just another example about how people think it isnt a big deal.
I have to go but I'll add on to this later.
edit: I was reading about a couple of studies that were done with college aged guys, and at least 6% of the men admitted to raping someone when words like rape werent involved in describing the act. There was a guy I grew up with and I know for a fact that he was raised to respect women, he held the doors open for us, he went out of his way to help me with stuff like even peeling my oranges. We had an encounter and no just didnt mean no for him, it didnt end in rape, something made him stop but our parts were right there it would have taken a second for him to have actually cross that boundary.
It made me realize that there's something going on where maybe people arent clear enough when teaching their kids about sex. We've all heard that whole "your lips say no but your eyes say yes" thing, and maybe people dont take "no" seriously enough, maybe they think it's the other person playing hard to get. I just dont people are making those boundaries clear enough.

Zion, you are far, FAR too easy to troll. It's about the only reason you get even half the responses you do. Make yourself less of an obvious target and it will be much easier for you post actively.
On topic: Terrible, terrible thing that should have never happened. Hope to see each person prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

It's another article about it. Apparently this wasn't the first time this girl was sexually assaulted, it was the third. I don't understand why her parents didn't keep her under strict surveillance after the first time. Let alone a second time. I don't think that she's to blame but how did she end up in the same horrid situation multiple times?

This is wrong and horrible in every way, but we don't know enough to rule out the possibility that she just wasn't in the wrong place at the wrong time. Yes it was obviously rape, but hey, I'm not about to watch the video to prove it.

So you're telling me the acceptance of those jokes arent contributing to or reflecting (or both in some unending cycle), the rape culture we're in or the indifference towards these crimes? I'm not saying that all of the people on here who have told me that I deserve to be raped or have made the shitty get back in the kitchen jokes are going to rape me (I have a feeling they'd condone it) or that they really think women should be making them a never ending supply of sandwiches. I'm saying it shows that we as a society really dont think rape is a big deal, which is really just making the problem worse.

In my experience (with me and with other people), people can maybe think it wasnt a big deal the first time, or they'll try to sweep it under the rug or ignore it. Really though, if your daughter had been assaulted once, would you keep her under strict surveillance for the rest of her life? With young kids, there's the need for protection but then there is the idea of keeping things as normal for kid as possible.

I wouldn't keep her under strict surveillance for the rest of her life, but I would for a really long time. I mean, she's eleven, most parents are still (or at least should be) overly protective when their child is that age. And if it happened twice, I'd move out of the area.

I don't think the jokes or even laughter from them means you condone rape or accepting of it. I just think it is a joke and doesn't reflect on someones true feelings. Rape is terrible and what happened in this city is utterly disgusting. It's kind of crazy because I only live an hour away and know a few people from there. Ha.

Reminds me of the time a neighbor of mine got caught feeling up a 12 year old in the woods and his defense was "her myspace said she was 14." This is fucking stupid, so very stupid. These men need to be castrated. How do you get 17 of your closest friends together to rape an 11 year old kid?

The jokes made are not a reflection of most people's true feelings (which I've already said) but I do think it's a reflection on our society and I think it really shows how nobody sees it as that much of a big deal. Honestly, I just wish everyone would think for about an hour about what it would be like to be raped by 18 men, think about the fear you'd have, the disgust you'd feel. Or just think about waking up in the middle of the night to a man (who you know) standing over you with nothing but some underwear that's slightly pulled down. Think about that horror and confusion that would flash through your mind. Think about trying to tell people about it but them ignoring it, brushing it off. Think about how often you'd want to take a shower to scrub his smell and the feel of his skin off you. Wanting to take a shower but being afraid to while people are home and at the same time being afraid to shower when you're alone. Losing the trust you have for everyone, feeling uncomfortable when you're alone with a man even if it's just your doctor. Constantly thinking that you did something wrong, or you didnt do enough to prevent it. Think about how hard it would be to sleep, trying to block the door so that nobody can come in at night ever again. All of the horrible night's sleep you'd get because every sound in the house makes you wonder if you're safe. Not wanting to shut your eyes because every time you do you feel like you're right there again, but wanting to sleep all day so that you dont have to deal with anything.
I dont think anyone who hasnt been through it can honestly think about all of that in depth for even a little while. I dont think people really realize the severity of it, so certain things like jokes are just acceptable. There was a kid who tried to bring up the puppy throwing thing and my joke in that thread, everyone went up in arms about it, all the while, rape jokes or telling people that they deserve to get raped are perfectly okay.

Trying to find words to describe this, I honestly can't. There are no words that properly describe or even summarizes any (Facebook) event like this. At no point is ANY form of rape or sexual assault justifiable. Not only was it ONE person who raped an ELEVEN YEAR-OLD GIRL, but it was SEVENTEEN PEOPLE!!! Realistically, this girl was in 5th grade. She is in grade school. This is simply sickening and at no point would I ever show sympathy for any of the perpetrators.
