I seen Brand New tonight and they went with basically the same playlist that theyve gone with the whole tour so far. Heres a small summary/slash review of what I thought of it.
They opened with Jude Law (just Jessie playing it, sounded great) then 70x7 (which I thought they hacked, I think Jesse mumbled most of it and let the crowd take over), The Shower Scene which they hacked again, just played too hard and everything sounded jumbled and distorted, The No Seatbelt Song which sounded ok, but still I wasnt impressed so far.
Then Jesse play Soco and that may had been the highlight of the night because the feedback from the crowd made it sound better than it did on the record, it was beautiful.
From there the show turned.
They play all of Deja in order and nailed every song with few minor slip ups on the way. The opened with Tautou and used two drummers, Brian ofcourse and Im not sure but Im guessing Derrick Sherman playing the Toms adding effect, they also did this on another song but I cant remember which one. Jesse told the story behind the song title, "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot" which was another great moment of the night. They played "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" and sounded great on it but they had images of fireworks going off in the background and I got a laugh out of that. As a matter of fact thats one criticism I can take out of the show. Through most of the concert they had a projector with either fireworks or what resembled microsoft Windows '98 screen savers in the back ground, some songs were video camera shots of the band. This was something that just fell flat and cheesey with me and normally presentation dosent bother me that much but it was like, come on youre fucking Brand New, you could do better than that. Another moment that ofcourse brought everybody to sing along was "Play The Crack Sky" which was something I was waiting for the whole night and it came out great and was a real moving moment as that song always is to listen too.
They left stage after Play The Crack Sky and I suppose thats where they expected cries for an encore but everyone knew that they had to play something off TDAGARIM (did I get that right this time?) so the crowd was a simmering buzz waiting for them to get back out on stage.
Instead of going right into Sowing Season like I figured, they played this 5 minute long interlude which started out great with Jesse strumming some fast accoustic chords but then it developed into this erie sounding mess, with heavy drums, deep electric chords and a ton of reverb, that I didnt enjoy.
They went into Sowing Season, then played Milestone, which sounded great, Luca which Im not a fan of but they jammed it and sounded exact to the CD, Degausser which was aided greatly by the crowd suppourting the group vocals and making it sound eeriely exact to the how it sounded on the album, they shortend up the song considerably though which was good, because I think it would had got stail if they played the final "Take me take me to your bed verse" for 4 minutes. They played Jesus Christ fallowing that and nailed it, perfectly but its an easy song to play, still they make it sound great. They closed with You Wont Know and did an awesome job at it even though Im not a fan of that song, but Im not really a fan of Sowing Season, Luca and Degausser either but they played it so well, it was good to listen to.
Overall like I said they had some minor slip ups in missing or playing the wrong chord or beat, some PA feedback during the vocals, but this show really met the hype and I left extremely satisfied. I also realized how great of a vocalist Lacey can be if he chooses to be, like I said, some songs he seems to just mumble but some he sings his lungs out on key and it sounds amazing. I was very impressed by him.
A couple other things to watch out for is they play some different breakdowns such an extra breakdown extending the length of "I Will Play My Game Beneath The Spin Light" by Im guessing around a minute and a half to two minutes and they also leave alot of reverb and feedback on their instruments in between songs so look out for that.
Manchester Orchestra and Kevin Devine were great as well, pay attention to them, they are well worth it.
Hope this gives you a good idea of what to expect and to be excited for but you never know, theyre a fairly unpredictable band, they may change things up so be prepared for anything.
