I seen Brand New tonight and they went with basically the same playlist that theyve gone with the whole tour so far. Heres a small summary/slash review of what I thought of it.

They opened with Jude Law (just Jessie playing it, sounded great) then 70x7 (which I thought they hacked, I think Jesse mumbled most of it and let the crowd take over), The Shower Scene which they hacked again, just played too hard and everything sounded jumbled and distorted, The No Seatbelt Song which sounded ok, but still I wasnt impressed so far.

Then Jesse play Soco and that may had been the highlight of the night because the feedback from the crowd made it sound better than it did on the record, it was beautiful.

From there the show turned.

They play all of Deja in order and nailed every song with few minor slip ups on the way. The opened with Tautou and used two drummers, Brian ofcourse and Im not sure but Im guessing Derrick Sherman playing the Toms adding effect, they also did this on another song but I cant remember which one. Jesse told the story behind the song title, "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot" which was another great moment of the night. They played "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows" and sounded great on it but they had images of fireworks going off in the background and I got a laugh out of that. As a matter of fact thats one criticism I can take out of the show. Through most of the concert they had a projector with either fireworks or what resembled microsoft Windows '98 screen savers in the back ground, some songs were video camera shots of the band. This was something that just fell flat and cheesey with me and normally presentation dosent bother me that much but it was like, come on youre fucking Brand New, you could do better than that. Another moment that ofcourse brought everybody to sing along was "Play The Crack Sky" which was something I was waiting for the whole night and it came out great and was a real moving moment as that song always is to listen too.

They left stage after Play The Crack Sky and I suppose thats where they expected cries for an encore but everyone knew that they had to play something off TDAGARIM (did I get that right this time?) so the crowd was a simmering buzz waiting for them to get back out on stage.

Instead of going right into Sowing Season like I figured, they played this 5 minute long interlude which started out great with Jesse strumming some fast accoustic chords but then it developed into this erie sounding mess, with heavy drums, deep electric chords and a ton of reverb, that I didnt enjoy.
They went into Sowing Season, then played Milestone, which sounded great, Luca which Im not a fan of but they jammed it and sounded exact to the CD, Degausser which was aided greatly by the crowd suppourting the group vocals and making it sound eeriely exact to the how it sounded on the album, they shortend up the song considerably though which was good, because I think it would had got stail if they played the final "Take me take me to your bed verse" for 4 minutes. They played Jesus Christ fallowing that and nailed it, perfectly but its an easy song to play, still they make it sound great. They closed with You Wont Know and did an awesome job at it even though Im not a fan of that song, but Im not really a fan of Sowing Season, Luca and Degausser either but they played it so well, it was good to listen to.

Overall like I said they had some minor slip ups in missing or playing the wrong chord or beat, some PA feedback during the vocals, but this show really met the hype and I left extremely satisfied. I also realized how great of a vocalist Lacey can be if he chooses to be, like I said, some songs he seems to just mumble but some he sings his lungs out on key and it sounds amazing. I was very impressed by him.
A couple other things to watch out for is they play some different breakdowns such an extra breakdown extending the length of "I Will Play My Game Beneath The Spin Light" by Im guessing around a minute and a half to two minutes and they also leave alot of reverb and feedback on their instruments in between songs so look out for that.

Manchester Orchestra and Kevin Devine were great as well, pay attention to them, they are well worth it.

Hope this gives you a good idea of what to expect and to be excited for but you never know, theyre a fairly unpredictable band, they may change things up so be prepared for anything.

Just out of curiosity, what was Jesse's say The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot was about?

I was there last night too and I thought it was an amazing show put on by Brand New. When they came out for their encore they played Welcome To Bangkok and usually I just skip the track on the album, but live, with all the buzz and energy of the crowd I thought it was great. It was my first time seeing Brand New and I couldnt have wanted anything more, they played for almost 2 hours with intensity the entire time, Im glad I got the chance to see them live.

The most interested thing I thought he said about that was his dad thought if he got good at playing basketball it would be a way for him to be able to afford college.

Yeah Kevin Devine has a full band now. I didnt think he sounded that good but at the time I was a little further back in the venue so maybe the accoustics werent that good for me. He seemed like he was having fun and people upfront were too and he also made this whole anti-war/bush speech to to try to get the crowd amped and I think its the 4 year anniversary of the war too that was the other reason why. But he was solid, I would rather see him headlining or in a smaller club to get a feel of him live. Its hard to judge a guy like him in a large venue like that, only playing 6 songs.

I was there too... I thought that Manchester Orchestra and Kevin Devine put on solid performances. The last song of Kevin Devine's set where he covered a Neutral Milk Hotel song, "Holland, 1945" I believe it was, was pretty cool when some of Brand New and Manchester Orchestra came out to play it with him.

I thought the Your Favorite Weapon part of Brand New's set was mediocre for what they are capable of..but when they started Deja it seemed to turn into a whole new show. It was a really fun show and being St Patricks Day it was a really sober crowd ;-) , if you can still catch this one I would recommend it.

definately agree with you on every point.

Manchester sounded exact to me and like I was saying about Kevin Devine earlier, I was towards the back couldnt hear him that well.

did youpick up the exclusive tour ep? he put that cover on there. i caught the end of it I had to piss really bad, so i missed one whole song and most of that waiting in line.

i wasnt on the main floor for Brand New, it was funny, I was up front for Manchester, decided to go buy some merch, hung in the very back for Kevin Devine and moved back up to middle section with all the fancy carpet was and there was a ton of people wasted back by where i was including this group of like 5 scene skanks that were bombed out of their minds and obnoxiously dancing to even Play The Crack Sky and trying to sing a long but Im sure they werent exactly singing the same words Jesse was. Also there was this group of bros who also seemed bombed that kept playing air guitar. But it wasnt as a beer soaked enviroment as I was expecting, probably because security was a monster there.

I dont like your review. but I dont think they shortened degausser, the line "Take me take me to your bed" doesnt last for four minutes, its one line, maybe ure confusing it with "i love you so much baby dont reply..." form limo, that lasts four minutes. and the "erie sounding mess with heavy drums" is called "welcome to bangkok" i dont see if u have the cd how u couldnt realize that. they played jesus christ very well, but i wouldnt say they nailed it, becuase jesses guitar got unplugged at the end and he had to sing the guitar part. dont get me wrong, it was the best concert ive been to, bt ure review kinda sucks. also, the songs from yfw sounded great, especially "the no seatbelt song" which has sooo much more emoition live then it does on cd. i also loved when they play "okay i beleive u but my tommy gun dont" they extened the bridge of the song and jammed for a bit. overall, they were GREAT live, it was also my first time seeing them live, and they blew me away. Great show.

i did get it confused with limosine because they do kinda run into eachother and blend in, thanks for pointing that out.
i know about the welcome to bangkok mistake that was already pointed out to me and i wasnt familiar with that song just because Im not a big fan of that CD and its one of the songs I probably skip over a lot. I didnt remember his guitar coming unpugged at the end of Jesus Christ, must had slipped my mind.

i wasnt going for an actual like Steve Henderson review or something like that, just trying to give people an idea of how the show wentand what to expect. if i was, i think i would gotten my facts straightend out, cleaned up my grammer, fixed all the typos and spelling errors i left in.

true, now that i kinda read my post, i was kinda being rude/mean. wasnt my intentions. but how could u not remember jesses guitar unplugging, it was funny. i liked how he just rolled with it and just sung the guitar part. afterwords he was like "youll have to excuse me, i got unplugged for a moment, well get back to making noise" or somethying like that. what a great show.

I bet they are getting extremely sick of playing some of those older songs because they have grown up SO MUCH & in so many ways since writing them....I can't imagine.
