Illinois, no question. It's easier to like than any of his others, while being his best by a landslide. Not that all his others aren't great, illinois is just amazingly great. Simple as that.

Try Michigan first, if you can't get into Sufjan through that, then go for Illinois. everyone should check out the Avalanche B-side album as well as Seven Swans, and the Christmas album. Also, everyone should check out Denison Witmer. Sufjan appeared in a number of his songs, and is a good friend to Denison. you'll love him.
