The University of Wisconsin says "no" to the RIAA (http://badgerherald.com/news/2007/03/21/uw_to_riaa_no_way.php).
As the University of Wisconsin waits to receive a batch of settlement offers addressed to 15 of its students from the Recording Industry Association of America, university officials have made one thing clear: They won’t play along.

so if you told the RIAA to, ahem, "suck my fucking dick."

is that kinda like a death threat towards the prez? just not legal at all???

cuz I think that would be my response to the RIAA.

I read an article about this, not sure if its the same one. The school is still taking illegal activity very seriously and suspending internet access if someone is suspected of downloading stuff. They are also making students sign another agreement saying they won't download and understand what happens if they do. BUT they still aren't playing along with the RIAA's nonsense and for that, I applaud them!

props to wisconsin for standing up to the riaa. i go to syracuse and we received like 37 of those letters and the university forwarded them right away. a kid i know got one of them and is paying the $3000 settlement fee, which is bullshit, because its the only way the riaa will make money off of this cuz theyve yet to successfully sue people in court.

Whats with the $3000 universal settlement. I've heard of them going after people who downloaded like 5 songs and others who downloaded copious amounts in the thousands. If I'me gonna illegally download, I'm gonna make sure to download so much to make sure I get my $3000 worth of music. If a band out there would releaes a song called "Fuck The RIAA" they would be my new favorite band. Oh yeah and suck my dick you copyright waiving sons of bitches at the RIAA!!!!

Damn, I think I'm on their list of people to watch for illegal downloading now...hahaha

I am a student at UW-Madison and everyone here has recieved an email warning us about downloading music illegally. The email we recieved is as follows:
The recording industry is threatening lawsuits against those who may have
engaged in illegal file sharing. They are currently targeting students who
live in university residence halls. Recently, UW-Madison and other
universities have been notified that they will receive settlement letters
that are to be passed on to the individuals whom the senders believe to be
guilty of copyright infringement. Consistent with current network
management procedures and our understanding of federal law, UW-Madison does
not plan to forward these letters directly to campus network users. We
will, of course, comply with a valid subpoena.

However, if the UW-Madison is given cause to believe that a student,
faculty or staff network user may have infringed on copyrights, it will
take action. University network policies empower the CIO to terminate that
person’s network access until the matter is resolved. The Dean of Students
office (for students) or supervisors (for employees) will be notified and
other disciplinary action may be taken, as appropriate.

Unauthorized peer-to-peer file sharing of copyrighted works is illegal in
many circumstances, and a violation of the university’s Appropriate Use
Policy. Please be advised of your rights and responsibilities under these
rules. For more information, see:

FWIW, we got warnings when I was a freshman at UW (in '01) and people continued to download music, movies, computer programs and porn without any repercussions.

this is interesting. i would have so much more love for my school if i knew they had my back like this. it really shows that they care for their students, individually. buuuuut, wouldnt you think that their stance on this would contradict their plagerism laws? universitys are very serious on plagerism, but when it comes to copyright infringement, UW lets it slide. cool but weird.
