And the Arcade Fire (http://www.absolutepunk.net/arcadefire) have now been dubbed, "The World's Greatest Band (http://www.slate.com/id/2161645/)."

Too bad the site wasn't called Slade, because we all know he thinks Arcade Fire is the greatest band in the world. :-D

Slightly off topic but not really because of the sentence in this post...

Can anyone explain to me the grammatical rules about starting a sentence off with a conjunction? I had always thought conjunctions should never be used to start a sentence but then I heard it's ok.

While I respectfully disagree with this article, I am at least happy to see that such a good chunk of it was basically stating that Springsteen has been such an influence to so many artists nowadays, that makes me really happy to see. On a personal level, I would argue that the Hold Steady takes Bruce's baton just slightly before the Arcade Fire.

Look at what a trip to Saturday Night Live does for your band.

im ok with that honestly. could be a hell of a lot worse. and i love arcade fire.

Great band, but nowhere near "world's greatest" (although I don't know who would be).

again, I'll probably get villified for this, but I've never been able to get into the Arcade Fire. I don't know why becase based on their influences and the music they make they seem like they would be right up my alley... but I just can't get into them.

But even if I loved them this is blatantly false. The fact that U2 was the greatest band in the world completely takes the credibility away from this article. Good for TAF for getting the press, but this is just sensationalist. they have two albums, one of which has been out for a little over two weeks... the obsession period with this album isnt even over yet.

I would argue that even in their genre, The Decembrists, Death Cab for Cutie, and Bright Eyes are far better bands that The Arcade Fire.

as for the best band in the world.... hm.... I think The Flaming Lips would be up there... Bruce and the E Street Band are still amazing in their age... The Hold Steady are an amazing band... and Bright Eyes could be up there if Cassadega lives up to expectations.

so not even close for the Arcade Fire.

Honestly...I would agree. Right now, I can't think of a band making more innovative, creative, or awesome music. If they mean all time, however, that I would disagree with.

it really sucks for bands when they get dubbed "greatest band in the world" or "the next Beatles," or something along those lines within their first 2 albums. imagine trying to live up to that with their next album. :\

SexyJeff
03/21/07, 12:54 PM
I agree. They only have 2 albums out. Come back in 20 years if they're still together and selling out arenas every night. Until then, i refuse to put them in the same elite category with Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles.

P.s. Arcade Fire are fucking horrible anyways.

i dont know about worlds greatest... im more stuck on the descriptions of other bands in this article...

Blink 182 "snotty little pop-punk band."
The Hold Steady "great beer-soaked poets"
The Aracde Fire "the most flaming practitioner of Springsteenism—and U2ism, for that matter"
Angels and Airwaves "Angels and Airwaves, which strives to re-create the reverb-heavy vastness of U2-circa 1986, with unintentially comic results."

Honestly, how can someone bestow this title upon anyone? While Arcade Fire is as worthy as anyone two-albums into their career, I don't quite think it's fair to them to put such a burden on them. It's like Observer calling Kele Okereke "voice of a generation" - it isn't fair to him, and this title isn't fair to Arcade Fire.

In other news, it's about time a Canadian band got this much attention. And I agree with the majority of that article - but I still don't think it's fair to give this band such a huge burden.

I love Arcade Fire.

I loved this quote more though: "Tom DeLonge, who spent years delivering three-chord electroshock treatments as co-leader of the snotty little pop-punk band Blink 182, has formed has a new group, Angels and Airwaves, which strives to re-create the reverb-heavy vastness of U2-circa 1986, with unintentionally comic results."

Poor Tom, hahaha.

Not the greatest...yet, but they really are one of the truely great bands. Plus, I really like the fact that a band on a indie label is being called "The Greatest Band Ever".

this album sounds like it was mixed and mastered in a porta potty, i mean really what the fuck is up with that.

it could have been soo much better.

and lol they said they were better than Radiohead.

pretty sure I have radiohead posters on my wall, not arcade fire. pretty sure radiohead sells out arenas and has been touring for 15 years.

it amazes me the shit that people get paid to write on the internet these days. i need to get around to starting a new site.

http://www.gpuss.co.uk/english_usage/start_sentence_conjunction.htm

I still take a very firm stance against formally starting a sentence with a conjunction. It just isn't right. Conjunctions, by nature, are meant to link two or more complete thoughts together, and to start a sentence with one is to leave the reader ignorant to some detail, which was intended to be explained in another complete thought (or in this case, sentence). As a writer, it is always safest to assume ignorance and explain oneself.

amen.

(and for all the haters, I'm saying this because they got me, and I'm sure TONS of other people on this site, into music in the first place. No one is saying they played music that was incredibly ground breaking. They made amazing, catchy pop punk, and I owe them everything in terms of igniting my passion for music.(
