Here's a good question that I hope hasn't been done before. Who do you think are the top 3 songwriters right now?

Here's mine:
1. Kris Roe (I swear he writes about my friggin life. I know i sound like jason now)
2. Matt Pryor (Even his stuff with new ams. is incredible)
3. Davey Havok (deep shit)

Ben Harper.

well of right now it's tough to say but i would have to say my favorite songwriter is Rivers Cuomo of Weezer. Though their more recent stuff has kind of sucked, tons of what he wrote before the green album is golden. For bands doing well right now, Jesse of Brand New would have to be my favorite.

I don't really concentrate on how well the lyrics are written, or how much originality is in the song or how they use descriptions or whatever. i basically focus on how well they get the point of the song across. i don't really have a favourite song writer, but i really like the singer from fm static's writing and the guy from billy talent. right now anyways.

So only others have to back up their opinions? Sounds hypocritical to me. But thank you for the tip, I will now go and read Thrice's lyrics for the first time....wait. Tell me Kevin, what is so "obviously" not good about Thrice's lyrics, also, how are Conor Oberst's better?

I am pretty sure I backed up my opinion. Just read them, they are unoriginal and not well thought out. How about this for example?

can we,
can we kill each other quickly?
quick enough so i won't feel it?
a shot of strobe light anesthia
and I'll be fine

as I begin to feel cold
my hands are shaking from fear,
white from clutching my pride,
red from cutting you,
and blue from telling lies.

Nearly every band, like Thrice, has so called, intelligent lyrics, like these.

Conor Oberst's lyrics on the other hand, are inredible. The man is a genius.

Let's see, can Dustin write something like this?

I have a friend, he is made mostly of pain. He wakes up, drives to work,
and then straight back home again. He once cut one of my nightmares out of paper.
I thought it was beautiful, I put it on a record cover.
And I tried to tell him he had a sense of color and composition so magnificent.
And he said "Thank you, please but your flattery is truly not becoming me.
Your eyes are poor. You are blind. You see, no beauty could have come from me.
I am a waste of breath, of space, of time."
I knew a woman, she was dignified and true. Her love for her man was one of her many virtues.
Until one day, she found out that he had lied and decided the rest of her life,
from that point on would be a lie. But she was grateful for everything that had happened.
And she was anxious for all that would come next. But then she wept.
What did you expect? In that big, old house with all those cars she kept.
"Oh!" and "such is life," she often said. With one day leading her to the next,
you get a little closer to your death, which was fine with her.
She never got upset and with all the days she may have left,
she would never clean another mess or fold his shirts or look her best.
She was free to waste away alone.
Last night, my brother he got drunk and drove. And this cop pulled him off to the side of the road.
And he said, "Officer! Officer! You have got the wrong man.
No, no, I'm a student of medicine, the son of a banker, you don't understand!"
The cop said, "No one got hurt, you should be thankful. And you carelessness,
it is something awful. And no, I can't just let you go. And though your father's name is known,
your decisions are yours alone. You are nothing but a stepping stone
on a path to debt, to loss, to shame."
The last few months I have been living with this couple.
Yeah, you know, the kind that buy everything in doubles. They fit together, like a puzzle.
I love their love and I am thankful that someone actually
receives the prize that was promised by all those fairy tales that drugged us.
And they still do me. I'm sick, lonely, no laurel tree, just green envy.
Will my number come up eventually? Like Love is some kind of lottery,
where you can scratch and see what is underneath. It's "Sorry",
just one cherry, "Play Again." Get lucky.
So I have been hanging out down by the train's depot. No, I don't ride.
I just sit and watch the people there. They remind me of wind up cars in motion.
The way they spin and turn and jockey for positions.
And I want to scream out that it is all nonsense.
And that their lives are one track, and can't they see how it is all pointless?
But then, my knees give under me. My head feels weak and
suddenly it is clear to see that it is not them but me, who has lost my self-identity.
As I hide behind these books I read, while scribbling my poetry,
like art could save a wretch like me, with some ideal ideology that no one can hope to achieve.
And I am never real; it is just a sketch of me.
And everything I have is trite and cheap and a waste of paint, of tape, of time.
Sometimes I park my car down my the cathedral, where floodlights point up at the steeples.
Choir practice is filling up with people. I hear the sound escaping as an echo.
Sloping off the ceiling at an angle. When voices blend they sound like angels.
I hope there is still some room left in the middle.
But when I lift my voice up now to reach them. The range is too high, way up in heaven.
So I hold my tongue, forget the song, tie my shoe and start walking off.
And try to just keep moving on, with my broken heart and my absent God
and I have no faith but it is all I want, to be loved ad believe in my soul.

Just because some "generic hardcore" band can put together some "deep" lyrics, doesn't make them good.

ThriceOwnsYou
08/03/03, 05:56 PM
I'm sorry that the metaphor in Kill Me Quickly is above you. The lyrics you posted were horrible. Writing a whiny short story doesn't make Conor Oberst a good lyricist. In fact it pisses me off you would even consider Dustin and him comparable. Thrice's lyrics don't evolve around the lead singer's neverending depression, probably the reason you can't relate. If you think whing and crying are better than these, you are FUCKED.

to what end do we
proceed so boldly
if all we are is
chemical reactions
and what world have you
deftly sold me
if you reduce me

if I have no soul to touch
no heart to love
no evil to rise up above
no angels and no ghosts
no real victories to toast
if you believe that this is true
then I must ask
to what end do you proceed

NO FIRE IN OUR EYES
NO STEEL IN OUR HEARTS
NO MAGIC IN OUR SONGS
ARE WE JUST EMPTY VESSELS

did I not feel your love
did I not feel your hate
and did my heart not beat
and did my heart not break
and are these tears for naught
and are these worlds in vain
if this is all we are then what
HAVE WE TO GAIN

What of all the art and books
music and poetry
What of all our memories
What of OUR HOPES AND DREAMS
They hold no value then
We hold no faith but greed
So I must ask you
To what end do we proceed?

Just because some "generic hardcore" band can put together some "deep" lyrics, doesn't make them good.

HAHAHAHA. Thrice aren't even hardcore, let alone "generic". Name another band that sounds like Thrice. What, can't? Even if you do manage to find one, it's because they are ripping off Thrice. Too bad you can't say the same about Conor Oberst, his lyrics and music are both uninspired and annoying, not to mention generic. NEWS FLASH WALTER CRONKITE: whining about breakups isn't innovative.

Yes, and no. I'm not saying he isn't talented, I'm saying Thrice totally owns him. I'm not a fan of his music personally so maybe I am a bit biased, but forgive me for pointing out that all his lyrics seem to be depressing and self-pitying.

First off, I never said Thrice was a bad band. I simply said that Dustin's lyrics weren't the best. Me calling them "generic hardcore" simply means that they incorporate uneccessary and fake, hardcore "glamore", to try and come off as a hard band. Disagree, then cool, it's your opinion.

Obviously you have never listened to a Bright Eyes album if you think it's all whining about breakups.

You have misinterpreted the songs then, beacuse while kill me quickly is talking about relationships, it doesn't come across as whining to me. But i would like to know what songs you have heard, because they would have to be extremely limited, being that only a couple songs have anything to do with that. Dustin does not 'whine" at all even if talking about relationships, while all conor oberst(and untold numbers of bands like his) does is whine.

They don't "whine alot". Even if you construed kill me quickly as whining, thats only one song. Name others, since every song you have heard Dustin is whining. Not liking Thrice isn't an excuse to say they whine.

First off, I'm glad you don't dislike Thrice. I only said his lyrics were the best. By "unnecessary and fake hardcore glamore" I will assume you mean screaming, heavy breakdowns and guitar parts, double kick-drums etc. Just because they don't sound the way you want them to, doesn't mean they sound "fake". Screaming etc. is used to show emotion not just "to come across as a hard band", because I'm pretty sure that isn't their goal. What would they have to do to not become generic, invent there own sound? Too late. Thrice are not hardcore, they are not punk, they are not pop, they are not rock. They blend elements of all those seamlessly into what anyone can recognize as they're own sound.

I don't really like Thrice, and find their lyrics to be fairly simplistic. They don't even bother to bust out of a mundane rhyme scheme. At least Conor tries different things.
