I know not all of you have heard the new CD or will hear it until 9/16 or whenever it comes out. But for those who have and are mixed about it, here is my non-factual theory on the album.
Saves the Day are an amazing band, everyone knows that, so do they. Because of this, they are given the liberties to do certain things others can't. They can afford to experiment at great lengths, as has happened on In Reverie which is a dreamy blend of slow ballads and melodies. They don't feel that pressure other bands feel to release the most appealing album. That is where theory #2 comes into effect.
This album was intended to be released by Vagrant. Everyone knows it would have been their last on the label. What better time would there be to experiment and create an album that allowed them to focus on a new formula? They were planning to sign to a major after In Reverie was out, where they could then re-focus on playing more conventional Saves the Day songs. It would also be a good first impression for a big label. This was what they were thinking (assuming the theory is factual) after they finished recording the album. But as we all know things change, and Saves the Day decided to jump the gun and signed to Dreamworks. THE NEW CD'S SOUND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MAJOR LABEL INFLUENCES. IT WAS RECORDED BEFORE THEY SIGNED TO DREAMWORKS.
Ok so here was their idea. Release In Reverie, somewhat of a concept album in that all the songs are very similar in tone and content, then very soon afterwards sign to a major and record a new album. Get it?
So don't be dissappointed by In Reverie. It's an album they wanted to create. And my prediction is Saves the Day will release another album after that within the next year and a half.
