i TOTALLY understand. my situation is similar. i dont socialize at all with people at school, so yeah, im the weird chick that doesnt really talk to anyone. i can count the words i say in one day too, that is until i get to speak to my bf. he totally undertands me and we are in the same situation. the only other person i talk to is my bro, and some VERY casual acqauintances at school. but i soon graduate, then ill be FREE!! i dont like the way things are now and i definetly need a change.

I'll make a comparison for you, since I have it too- but medication didn't work, talking to people sometimes feels like being chased by a bear

i used to suffer from social phobia, and yes it is hell. in my case i got better, but it totally screwed me over because i have a few close friends but compared to most people i'm still that kinda off-color girl that never used to talk and ontop of that i'm a bit stolid and solitary so alot of people precieve me that way. my advice is get in good with a couple people and keep it there for awhile and work your courage up bit by bit...

I would say that it most probably does work, because I was on it when I was younger, like 7-9 years old, and before that when I was like 6 years old my social phobia was even more severe than it is now, because when people would talk to me I wouldn't answer them back, it had something to do with my childhoo,d lots of tension in the house, but now there is no more tension in my house since my father moved away and my folks got divorced, but I'm just saying that when I suddenly went onto the medicatio at the time it helped me soooooooooooooooo much, after a few weeks I was the big shot in the class, it was like magic, I think just because the medicine was stronger than the ones that some people might use, it was prozac and prozacis very strong, but I hope that I can go on something again and that it will work again!

I'm not a complete loner, I've always had friends. But when I don't know anyone, or I'm uncomfortable I can be extremely shy. And a lot of times i'll opt to sit home and watch tv instead of hang out with my friends, so for that they call me loner-ish.

I used to be like that, but it's not a big deal. I like having a few close friends rather then having tons of friends, and I like being by myself sometimes. So, it really doesn't bother me.

I can be sort of shy if I know absolutley know one...but it always seems like everytime I'm in a situation like that someone will come up and talk to me so I've never really been bothered by it?

I hate to sound like an ass to everyone else, but I fully agree with you on that statment minus the dumb bitches part. And to whoever said you CAN'T because its a phobia, that sounds like a bad excuse. Its not a disease, its a fear, no one said get in front of a billion people and start addressing them, try taking smaller steps. Its something you can overcome.

So, I talk to people at school (if I had a car and a job, which I am getting this summer, I would be able to socialize more) and have really good friends at school. Actually, social phobia is a very real problem and it usually only arises in certian situations, often school for young people. Just because the word "emo" has been usurped by popular shit heads who wallow in glorfying the whole "I have issues" stance that doesn't mean deppresion is a big joke.
The best way to get over it is through counselling and, if that doesn't work, just do something really crazy like jumping up and down and screaming during uncomfortable situations, it'll bring you out of your shell.
It's a really horrible condition but most of the time it's down to shyness rather than a actual mental disorder.
Still, that doesn't mean shit heads on AP have the right to mock it. Have fun working in Walmart, idiots.

a) i was joking about the owned thing. sarcasm is a little difficult to use in forums and that guy gets on my nerves.

b) i believe that guy was also being a jackass because the response about being beaten as a child was brought up because he told someone they should have been aborted. if you are supporting that guy, then apparently you support his statement about someone's parents having an abortion.

Yes, I do enjoy making fun of people. It is true. Somewhat of a guilty pleasure of mine, I do not really do it in real life. However, your assumption that I am making fun of real people with real problems is simply incorrect. Sure, there are a few with real problems. And I try to steer away from them. By the way, a real problem is not "I am obsessed with this boy at school but I don't know what to say to him." But there are plenty of not-real problems posted here, as well. Unless you change it, it says "Registered User." When I went to change this, for whatever reason, "Registered Sex Offender" popped into my head. I get crap about it every now and then, but it doesn't really bother me, because, as are most of my posts, and everything that I do on the internet, it is pointless. i am a loner i guess. or you could say that i am too selective about the people i choose to surround myself with. but even if i do want to get to know people better, it gets in the way a lot. i'm socially inept or something. i wouldn't say i'm especially happy like this but being around people doesn't really make me feel better.
