The University of Nebraska was so annoyed with the RIAA's requests to "help rat out students who file-share" that they have sent them a bill (http://www.boingboing.net/2007/03/22/u_of_nebraska_to_ria.html) for the time the they have wasted dealing with the RIAA's demands.

The vast majority of American colleges and universities hate the RIAA, so this isn't a huge deal. The bill however, is fucking hilarious.

I love my school, but OU didn't do anything to help the students...they just handed the letters over because it gave the kids "the most options", claiming that the riaa would follow up with John Doe lawsuits to the school and get the names anyway and the students would then miss out on the opportunity to pay the discounted fee ($3000)...I'm not sure if thats how it really works or not, but this thing with Nebraska is absolutely bad ass I wish we had been that creative with the whole ordeal

I am literally sitting right next to this university right now, we're playing a show down the street tonight... I feel like walking in and shaking someone's hand. This is great. The more standup to the RIAA we get, the sooner the industry can shape the hell up again.

OK, so i know i may be crucified for this statement because the RIAA is the "man" and everyone hates them because of DRM and half of everything they do...with that being said, i support what they are fundamentally trying to do. they are trying to get money from people who steal music and give it back to the people who deserve it. there are so many people who help make a record; engineers, producers, everyone at the labels (big and small), and a bunch of other people too. i just don't understand why the so many people who "love" music constantly steal it and make it harder for their favorite bands to make it. people wonder why so much of music sucks, and they don't realize that it is because of everyone who steals music...it's just like any business or church or whatever; with no money things go to shit. and don't give me that "the bands shouldn't care about the $ if they love the music" bs...even if they don't care about the money, they have to have it to tour and make more music. period.

I should send them a bill for the extra time it takes me to pirate music now that they've shut down Napster and KaZaA.

Some people (myself included) believe that music is an art and not a product to be marketed and butchered by capitalism. Art is supposed to be an expression of creativity and imagination, not the hollow shell of those forementioned ideas. Also, whatever happened to the idea of the starving artist; the one who lives and dies for his art, not the strive for material gain that could come of it...
