Just a cool idea I have to encourage good posting. Lets admit, for some people, 10,000 posts is a milestone that seems impossible. Members want to reach that mark as fast as they can to get all the goodies, such as access to the Private Forum, and most importantly, a bigger avatar. Of course there is also the incentive of having a high post count in order to get respect. Essentially, the race to 10,000 becomes a numbers game.
So what people often do is post one word responses, or even worse, just a smilie face of some sort. Now, I'm not saying doing that a few times is bad. Sometimes you just want to give a quick endorsement or reaction to something a user wrote. It's also fun. I'm sure I have a few of those comments and responses in my post history.Yet other times, people will consistently do this to achieve a higher post count. What we should do is promote quality over quantity, substance over numbers. I'm not saying to repeal the 10,000 rule because oveall, frequent posting is really the only fair way to do it.
How about this. How about every now and then, moderators cite a quality post or thread by rewarding the user who wrote it with temporary use of a big avatar - for the sake of this post, lets say a week usage. Additonally, moderators can make "poster of the week" awards, with a little "trophy" that can be put next to their username, like a little icon of some sort. This can work along with the big avatar awards, or in place of. Just throwing out ideas. What this does is encourage people to think about what they write, and to be the best contributors they can be. If a member with under 10,000 posts had it in his or her mind that they can be rewarded at anytime, they will go out of their way to put thought into what they type. It especially encourages very green members who may get discouraged when they see other members with over 20,000 posts. Importantly, beyond personal gain, it benefits the entire AP community with plain, old good posting. Remember, its only temporary use of a big avatar, so veteran posters, don't feel that you're being cheated.
What do you think?
*I've heard this is like scene points? Well, that was before my time, and from what I understand, it was given out by all members. I'm talking about moderators every now and then rewarding good posts with temporary prizes, like a limited time use of a big avatar or a little trophy icon that denotes an award.
