they've been talked about a lot lately in articles. let's discuss.

i'm fairly certain that jim nantz doesn't like sports. throughout watching him as a play by play and pre-game/halftime host, i don't believe the man has ever shown any actual sports knowledge. i'd like to sit down and talk to him to see if he actually knows anything about sports.

jim nantz's best work is done for the pga tour, considering he was a division I golfer (played on houston? with couples)

no one can really be mentioned in the same thought as tim mccarver. while i don't particularly like john madden, mccarver is in his one world of awfulness.

both of them just say the most obvious things in the world. it bugs the shit out of me. i have a fair to good knowledge of both sports and i feel like it would be impossible for me to step into their booths and do a worse job.

Not sure why people are hating on Nantz, who I actually think has the best voice and is the most tolerable one across the major networks. And to everyone saying that he says the most obvious things is clearly missing the point of the "play by play" position in the booth. He definitely is best on PGA Tour telecasts with his golfing background but he always shows a general to advanced knowledge on other sports he covers. And it's harder than you guys think to be experts in every sport that he covers. His job is to keep the broadcast moving and provide intermittent historical facts and current stats which he does pretty well.

And yes, Tim McCarver is the worst analyst on tv.

Nantz has no personality, and that's why I don't care for him. He doesn't bother me, he's just...boring.

Love Gus Johnson, love Marv Albert, and I miss when Bob Costas did the NBA on NBC - I always liked him as a straight play-by-play guy, he's really gone downhill since then.

And call it a homer pick, but Kevin Calabro is my favorite basketball announcer. He's done some stuff on a national level, so you guys may/may not have heard of him.

I definitely agree on Costas but I've always hated him on thought he was the worst "general" sports broadcaster. He was decent doing the old NBC games but Marv carried him. Lately, he always does these historical perspective pieces during telecasts that are horrendous and unnecessary. There only purpose is dragging each game/tourney to a screeching halt.

sean mcdonough, who used to be the red sox play-by-play guy but moved to ESPN and now does college basketball and football, is great. he's always on point but he isn't afraid to go out and criticize a ref or coach for a poor call or decision. he's just about always right too, which doesnt hurt.
