and my brother is moving to richmond.
should i be as pumped as i am or will it be a letdown compared to austin as far as the bands go? because from what i hear, the dc scene is kind of dormant right now..

it's just like moving anywhere: you'll be skeptical at first about what the music scene is like, but then you'll realize that the scene doesn't matter, it's the people that matter. and there are cool fucking people everywhere who will like the same music you do.

i meant that he could go to a lot of shows at the first unitarian when he gets older and gets a car since it's not that far.

true...but all the good bands will be out of state that play there, fyi. anything good from pa is either broken up or fucking moved out of state and to the west to make better music or has not been created yet.

yeah but it'd still be a scene that gets good music, even if they're not local.

but dc has lots of good local bands, like mass movement of the moth.

i mean, just like any town, dc's scenes are pretty diverse yet somewhat segragated. I think youll have a good time here, theres some awesome locals and theres usually a good show every night of the week. Sure, you can make claims saying that dc is full of indie hipsters that dont move at shows, but you can say that about any given show you see in any town, including richmond.

some venues that have good shows that you should check out:
http://www.warehousenextdoor.com (http://www.warehousenextdoor.com/) - small diy venue/art space that usually have amazing shows
http://blackcatdc.com (http://blackcatdc.com/) - middle sized venue that most band on larger indie labels tour at. they also have a smaller "backstage" stage downstairs in a rom that 150 people can fit into, so smaller shows happen there.
http://www.rockandrollhoteldc.com (http://www.rockandrollhoteldc.com/) - same as the black cat, minus the smaller stage, on the other side of town.

also American University hosts an amazing amount of shows in the basements of one of thier buildings, and those are always awesome. Theres a few houses starting to do shows again, such as the Bervin Haus and the Aqueeirum, and those rarely have any trouble with the cops (well except this one time, but he was kinda cool and let us play longer). Kids are usually really good with flyering these shows since they dont have a website or anything, so going to any show you can usually get lots of flyers for more shows. Theres also an online show site http://www.pheer.com (http://www.pheer.com/) for the area, but sometimes not every show is up there.

That being said, DC is fucking rad, always busy, and has an amazingly supportive DIY scene. Theres always fun stuff to do and if you get bored just fucking hang out with people or ride a bike. If you looking to get your ass kicked in Mario Kart on any platform, you know where to find me.
