View Full Version : Good Mourning vs. the Greatest Story Ever Told

Two great melodic punk records that came out in 2003. Both of them marked an evolution in each band's sound. (Alkaline Trio, and the Lawrence Arms, respectively). That, plus they're two of my favorite records ever, and definatley big influences on my songwriting. Care to debate/discuss? Cool deal....Personally, I prefer "Good Mourning", but just by a little bit. Usually it depends on what kind of mood I'm in, actually...

I say The Greatest Story Ever Told. If you were talking about Alkaline Trio's From Here To Infirmary, then maybe i'd reconsider (maybe).

What about From Here To Infirmary vs. Apathy and Exhaustion?

See, Goddammit would have to go up against A Guided Tour of Chicago

I'd pick The Greatest Story Ever Told, mostly due to the fact I could never really get into Alkaline Trio.

Wow, great thread. I think The Greatest Story Ever Told by far. now if you said Alkaline Trio- Self Titled, I would think about it a little harder.

Greatest Story Ever Told by far. I think that is one of the Lawrence Arm's strongest albums against Alk3's weakest IMO

I'm going to have to go with Alkaline Trio because:
a. I haven't heard that album by Lawrence Arms in a long time.
b. Alkaline Trio took my friends band out w/ them on their North American tour for this record.

I'm biased, but I'll check out the record again.

They're both very good but I'd say Greatest Story Ever Told.

Interesting pairing. Maybe I'll start a thread for those two...

Great record, but I honestly don't feel it's their best.

Eh, to each their own I guess. I love Alkaline Trio, so it is a toughie for me haha

Haha thanks. Their self-titled album is great, but again, I don't think its their best.

I agree its the Larry Arms strongest, but I also think that Good Mourning was Alk3's strongest as well. Guess I'm the odd man out on the matter hahaha

Haha nice. Cool to see someone else besides me that digs Good Mourning haha

They're both very good but I'd say Greatest Story Ever Told.
Cool. It is a tough decision...

Alkaline Trio is finished.

Arms in a no contest.
Finished? haha sorry man, but I guess were gonna have to agree to disagree there. Alk3 are one of the best out there, in my opinion, and have a really special place with me. As do the Lawrence Arms.
But thanks for your input just the same

So the suggested album pairings above gave me an idea. I'm going to start a sort of "thread within a thread" here, by having a sort of "tournament" hahaha. Basically, there'll be 6 rounds, each one consisting of an Alkaline Trio album vs. a Lawrence Arms album. Here's the schedule:

Round 1: Goddamnit vs. A Guided Tour of Chicago
Round 2: Maybe I'll Catch Fire vs. Ghost Stories
Round 3: From Here to Infirmary vs. Apathy and Exhaustion
Round 4: Good Mourning vs. the Greatest Story Ever Told (re-match)
Round 5: Crimson vs. Oh! Calcutta!
Round 6: Alkaline Trio (S/T) vs. Cocktails and Dreams

The last round is set up that way, instead of being in chronological order like the rest, since those two are both compilations of each band's older material, etc. Sound cool? The winners from each round might square off later on, who knows? Sounds a little extravagant, I know, but this should be fun hahaha. Sooo...here we go, with round 1:

Round 1: Goddamnit vs. A Guided Tour Of Chicago

Good Mourning is one of the worst Alkaline Trio albums but id still go with it. But if we were talknig Goddamnit or Maybe I'll Catch Fire then its a no contest.
Odd. Alot of people seem to hate that album but its actually my favorite by them. Hmmm...guess I am the odd guy out here hahaha

Mine too, buddy haha

Should we continue with this ^^^^ here, or should I make it a new thread altogether?
