By the facts and history of my life, I have gotten in fights with people who drink, smoke pot and live a lifestyle like that than kids I meet at hardcore shows that punch air...figure that one out. Right there tells me where the hardasses lie and it's clearly within the drunking people, moreso college drunks that rock polo shirts. I can spot them from a mile away going somewhere social and know that would be the person to be most of hand and cause problems with someone...usually they try and be creeps and get with girls, and fail. Kids that don't live that lifestyle are on paper and secnario wise far better off and will get girls that actually like them and not "drunken hookups."

When it comes down it, I'd rather have a girlfriend that doesn't drink or smoke than who does...in my past relationship...cheated on because she was a "beer slut." Hurt me enough to where I can say I'll never trust a girl that drinks when she's out without me again.

I have known straight edge kids who give people shit for drinking and doing drugs. I am totally cool with a person being straight edge, as long as they are not preaching to me about it.


I also know a straight edge kid who said he wouldn't be under an anesthetic during a surgery and he wouldnt be on pain killers after the surgery... i find that unlikely.

Someone under 21 can claim to be straightedge because its a lifetime thing. You're not straightedge for a week and then not the next week. If you say your straightedge then you're saying you wont drink, do drugs, etc. for the rest of your life.

While I'd agree with the idea that people who are truly "straight-edge" are so for life, in the United States, I don't personally think it's fair to say you're "officially" sXe prior to 21 because your not open to those things at a younger age. If you take the idea that some people are sXe to the extreme, they are sXe because the drugs and the like are bad for them and they don't want to be influenced by them. At the age of 21, the ability to legally purchase liquor exposes an individual to an 'evil' they weren't open to before. Sure, we can all be >21 and still manage to get alcohol but there's something to be said from abstaining from giving your friend money to buy it for you v. abstaining from physically going to the 7-11 on the way home from work and picking up a beer.

Not one of the people I know that are straight-edge are "self-righteous" about it. They respect others decisions to drink, but they don't do it themselves. You can't seriously judge an entire group of people by the few edge kids that you may have known.
