So, discuss away...

Indeed. When I heard the song "the 'F' Word", I almost shat my guts out hahaha. I sometimes wish I could sing like Joey does in that low register.

And thanks, man, hahaha. I guess I do. You've got great taste in music as well haha.

Yeah I'm completely in love with that album. I can't even pick a favorite song. Its just amazing. I can't wait until Joey releases that new project he just started.

Rebellious, reformed then upright
It's cold in Adelaide tonight
These streets are bright
Hotel bound in the small bus
My first whiskey in two years plus
It can't mask the weird vibe
This Sunday night
Passing red cars head to light

I couldn't get into that song at first, but I came around. When the bridge ends and it kicks in with the two electric guitars and Joey goes "The stories read of hospitals and alcohol, and empty households...", that moment is just unbelievable.

Indeed it is. It's so incredible how when you listen to both this album, and Lagwagon's "Resolve", you can hear every little bit of emotion in Joey's voice, and the whole music overall. I think that the man's true potential/genius came out, sadly, through tragedy, in the form of Derrick's suicide.

Yeah its really sad. I think it had alot to do with Derrick being depressed and also dealing with being gay, which I had no idea that he was until recently. But yeah especially on The Thirteenth Step, Joey just sounds so fucking sad on that.

Its really too bad Derrick had to go, he was a great drummer.

In case anyone doesn't know, new band from Joey Cape and Todd Capps (who was in BA as well)

It's pretty much the new BA, since that has ended.

And Bad Astronaut's cover of Megan > Bayside's cover of Megan (Even though that one is nice)

Sad indeed. And until now, I had no idea he was gay, actually. I did know he was depressed, and bi-polar...but anyway, bummer of a topic, so let's get back to discussing amazing music. It makes for much happier conversation haha.

But yeah, Derrick was a great drummer...and on that song, Joey does sound incredibly emotional.

I quite like both versions, actually. So it'd kinda hard for me to decide on that one haha.

They were a side project featuring Joey Cape from Lagwagon. Not all acoustic. Most of their songs have electric guitars, and are upbeat. But yeah, they still do have some acoustic tracks. I'd just say a softer side compared to Lagwagon though. But no, not an acoustic band. More straight up rock like The Foo Fighters.

Joey Cape's solo record that he did (split with Joey Cape) is amazing. It has a version of Violet without the drums and with an extra verse too, that for some reason was cut out of the Bad Astronaut version. I have no idea why.

Yeah, i like it's mellowness. In the Lagwagon version, Joey sounds so sad! (And justifiably so) but i get a little teary eyed when i listen to the Lagwagon version, even though it's not a ballad, haha. The tone in his voice kills me. He dosn't sound as depressed in this version.

TheOtherAndrew
04/04/07, 01:56 AM
Yeah I did notice that. I just like the laid backness of Bad Astronaut better as opposed to the million-miles per minute that the Lagwagon version has. Plus they probably recorded the BA version before Derrick died.

Wobbie
04/04/07, 02:07 AM
Wow, i didn't even know that it was written as a Bad Astronaut song, and the Bad Astronaut version was the original. That's awesome. I guess it took on a new meaning after Derrick died, and that's why Lagwagon recorded it, and why Joey sounds depressed as hell on that version.

Dude, I actually got a little teary-eyed listening to both versions, hahaha. But yeah, the Lagwagon version is more depressing than the BA version. Not too sure which one I like better...I'd have to say the BA version, I guess. But it's a tough call.

I just read the first page, and I must say that Bad Astronaut is indeed awesome. I just got into them late last year after their last album. It is one of the most unappreciated albums of 2006 IMO. I'm not even much of a Lagwagon fan, but Joey has a great voice to go along with the type's of instrumentals of Bad Astronaut.

Also has anyone heard Bad Astronaut's cover of Linoleum. That out does the original by far. It might still be on their myspace, or at least it used to be up for a download.

Yeah its still on their MySpace, and actually that was the song that got me into Bad Astronaut in the first place. I was completely blown away with what they did with Linoleum, I was so used to hearing NOFX do it as fast as possible and here it is being covered using a fucking banjo! Crazy.

Also I just realized that when I ripped the song I ripped it in mono by mistake. Does anybody have it in stereo? I'd really appreciate it.

Joey's songs > Tony's songs though.
True. Tony's are acoustic versions of NUFAN songs. Joey's are acoustic reworkings of Lagwagon songs. I remember listening to it for the first time, and thinking Tony's songs were awesome! Then i got to the second half and was completely blown away.

Slow jams? and "not even punk rock influcenced stuff"?
The song "Single" off of that album was more or less punk-influenced, and idk what you really mean by slow jams. That just seems like a pretty shallow way of looking at an album, imo...

and their last one is closer to their 2nd than the 1st. and its def their best, though all 3 are great.

Slow jams? and "not even punk rock influcenced stuff"?
The song "Single" off of that album was more or less punk-influenced, and idk what you really mean by slow jams. That just seems like a pretty shallow way of looking at an album, imo...

and their last one is closer to their 2nd than the 1st. and its def their best, though all 3 are great.

I mean more like Grey Suits and Logan's Run and 500 Miles which were pretty fast-paced with punk rock-ish drumming/guitars, not much on the second album like that. Really the only song I ever listened to much on the second album was Break Your Frame.

hmmm

yeah, I guess I see what you mean. I just think that their slower, more indie-rock sound is better than their older songs like that, by far, but to each their own. and Break Your Frame is ace, haha. great song. Though my favorite song on Houston We Have A Drinking Problem might be Our Greatest Year...idk for sure.

I'm not a fan of getting stuff online anyway because i like having the hardcopy, artwork, and it's just a good back-up incase my computer crashes or whatever.

yeah i agree with that i like having the artwork and shit ..its just easier for me to just click a button and i have all my music backed up on a another harddrive, unless im diehard for the band, in which case i pick up the hardcopy. i just think its a matter of convience
