Hey guys, I'm doing some lame original research for one of my courses, and apparently .000187% of the students at my school play video games.
I was just wondering if I could get some responses to the following questions:
1. Do you think that violence in video games or television causes desensitization or aggression in kids? If so, which do you think has more of an effect, games or tv?
2. How realistic do you view the environments in video games or television? Does this change with the type of genre that you are viewing?
3. Do you believe that young adults create make-believe worlds or warped realities after playing too many video games or watching too many movies of a similar genre?
4. Do you believe that your parents worried too much or not enough about the content of video games you played or movies you watched when you were a student in middle school and high school?
5. What aspects of a game or movie attract you to play them?
6. What do you feel about elements such as action, fantasy, or violence in these types of media?
Thank you SOOO much for anything you can give me. I'll give you a cookie/compliment/convo/hug/love.

1. I personally don't think violence video games negatively affect anybody, unless the kid was raised wrong. If anything, it makes kids more aware of what's going on in the world, and it can help them cope with future traumatic events.
2. Depends on the type of game. In a game like Grand Theft Auto, it can often seem fairly realistic. In a game like Mortal Kombat... well let's say I haven't met many people that can shoot fireballs out of their hands.
3. Again, it depends on the person. A normal, sociable adolescent will not be affected in any way. Some kids are a little less in tune with the rest of the world, and may try to connect the game to the outside world.
4. My parents personally didn't care what game I played. But then again, I was a Nintendo fanboy, so there wasn't much to worry about.
5. I like games where there is a solid beginning and end. Also, I love it when you're able to increase your abilities along the way. I guess I like fantasy games and stuff like that. I don't really care about realism.
6. The more the merrier. Nobody wants to play a fighting game without any violence. What's the point of buying a Grand Theft Auto game if you can't kill a cop, steal the cop car, and then bang a hooker in the car? The reason so many people like video games is because they allow us to be people we currently don't have the ability to be, and do things we normally wouldn't be able to do. We like to play sports games because we can suddenly pitch a baseball 90 mph, or dunk a basketball. We like to play racing games because it puts us behind the wheel of a car we will never be able to drive. We like fantasy games because we can feel like a hero saving the world. There's nothing wrong with violence in video games, as long as the child is not delusional.

I'm not using research from the bored, I just did a focus group and got crap answers from that, so I'm just going to edit some of the answers from that with some from this. I'm not actually going to use it in my paper or thesis, it's just for show, basically, haha.
1. I think games can cause aggression, but it is only temporary, games have a bigger effect because they are immersive. Games are different than other media because you are participating in the action.
2. I think they are but it depends on what you are playing
3. Yeah, every once in a while someone is fucked in the head. I think personal responsibility of not playing too much or the responsibility is the parents if the kids is young.
4. Kinda. I am a bit older so it wasnt as big as a deal with 8bit graphics. My parents wouldn't let me buy Mortal Kombat when it came out, but i was allowed to rent it. (what kind of backwards logic is that?)
5. It isnt an aspect of the game, more of an aspect of boredom
6. Fantastic

yeah, you totally missed the concept of a focus group then. "I don't like what this representative population wrote so I'm just going to make shit up! woo hoo!"

No, it's not that I disagreed with what the focus group said, it's that they didn't say anything. In regards to a question about the 'warped realities', all I got was "some kids are weird". I don't have time to do another one, otherwise I would, I just need some responses in general, I don't care if they agree with my thesis or not.

Why is everyone snapping at this guy for looking for a little bit of extra help? It's quite obvious a lot of people on here are exactly the type he needed to hear from in the first place, so it doesn't seem so 'retarded' to me.

1) Desesitization to movie violence or fake violence, probably. I still think much real life violence is still shocking. Despite however many videogames I have played, it is still scary to see someone get in a fight around me or see actual violence from a war or a crimescene.
2)I do not view the environments as too realistic. Some movies are but videogames, nope.
3) Maybe no warped realities, but after playing Crackdown for a few hours I started looking at buildings in Philadelphia and thought "Damn, I bet there would totally be an agility orb up there".
4)No my parents are not. They were when I was younger, but they taught me morals and enough compassion to realize that there is a difference between comitting crimes in a video game and doing it in real life.
5) It's not the violence usually. Mortal Kombat was cool because it was violent when I was younger, but it was also a damn good game anyway. Most of the time I play a game because it is fun. Guitar Hero II is some of the most fun I have had playing a game and there is not a single stitch of violence (save for an exploding drummer).
6) I feel action fantasy and violence in videogames is fine...but the viewer has to be able to recognize that it is not real and would have different consequences in real life.
