There is a huge different between "not getting" a band and getting them but knowing they suck. For instance i dont "get" jazz but i dont like Relient K. I dont listen to either but one i can respect for what they do and the other just plain bring the suck.

Well, in reply the Mars Volta, it's really the nice guitar Omar Rodriguez whips out that makes The Mars Volta for me.

-Bright Eyes (I like Commander Venus alot, but conor can just go take his self inflicted emotions and his formulaic sobby guitar riffs and jump off a building)
-City Of Caterpilar
-Red Hot Chili Peppers (This band, I don't know, what the fuck do they play? Either way, it's not that great)
-Gym Class Heroes (Just because an OG looking black guy can wear guages and associate with scene guys, doesnt make them cool. Though, I'll be honest, a couple of their songs have been spotted on my mp3)
-Nine Inch Nails
-Ben Harper (Even thoguh I like his stuff)

So you care not for the fact that The Mars Volta have some of the most ridiculously intriguing and haunting lyrics written in the last 15 or so years? Weird. Sure, instrumentally a great band but their lyrics and the way in which they are delivered is to me just as important and enjoyable.

City Of Caterpillar are an amazing band. Please give them more time. They are so amazing.

So you care not for the fact that The Mars Volta have some of the most ridiculously intriguing and haunting lyrics written in the last 15 or so years? Weird. Sure, instrumentally a great band but their lyrics and the way in which they are delivered is to me just as important and enjoyable.

City Of Caterpillar are an amazing band. Please give them more time. They are so amazing.

I agree with you to an extent about CoC, had they remained together they may have made a great album or continued the trend they did and made us all hate their music due to its similarity. What i'm trying to say is they may not have been as good as we think of them if they had made more than 9 songs (I'm counting the live stuff here), and really only "And you're wondering how a top floor could replace heaven" and "Driving Spain Up a Wall", those are the only two i enjoy and listen to on a consistent basis. The rest of their songs were branching out into styles that other bands did better, either before or after them. "Fucking Hero" and Kodan Armada, someone once pointed out how much KA ripped off that style, but most KA songs are more enjoyable and listenable than Fucking Hero is.

Really? I hate fucking hero. The background yelling part is cool, but the rest of the song is quite boring. We had a rip off thread and someone said "every KA song is a ripoff of fucking hero" and I agreed with that statement, but didn't think it was really a bad thing, as KA songs are typically a lot better (But they get some hate here).

Uh... saying all thursday albums sound alike is pretty stupid. Mostly just due to the one extremely obvious difference, ACBTLD has no screaming whereas FC has a decent amount. Musically its sorta slow and moody, but still, thats a huge difference, and I'd have to say you're deaf if you can't hear it. I don't particularly care for thursday (too slow) but to say its all the same is kind of... meh. Its all one genre? Maybe.

I don't know, maybe that could help some people, but to me Pink Floyd's music is just pure genius and beautiful. I don't really understand how someone couldn't "get" them, or enjoy at least a few of their tracks.

i don't think anyone really kisses their ass, they just respect them. they weren't the best of the early punk bands, but they were one of the pioneering bands of the genre so they get my respect.

Nirvana is a band i can't stand, but i do have to respect the influence they had because a lot of the bands i listen to today were influenced by them.
