haha i was going to go to www.songmeanings.net to see which band had the most songs but then i realized this thread wasnt about that.
Matthew Good is fucking horrible. I've never looked at his lyrics so I can't say anything about that but his music sucks.

Pennywise, Alkaline Trio and Thrice have by far the most serious issues. You might know that Jason (former Pennywise bassist and songwriter) had written all lyrics for Pennywise's '95 full-length "About Time" a few months before he died. And the lyrics really show the kind of anxiety he was in back then!
Oh, and did I forget to mention Anti-Flag and Good Riddance?? Shame on myself...
Also check out CHEVELLE for some deeper meanings, very good band!!!!!!!! Download "SEND THE PAIN BELOW" from Kazaa! Highly recommended!!

i think Thursday has the most meaningful songs. Many are controversial and adress issues such as genocide and watching a friend die in a car crash. At least if not meaningful, all their songs are powerful.
Wow i sound like a nerd

You said it best brother! I just kept it down to punk music, but if you're referring to Alternative / Hard Rock these bands sure are a class of its own! At The Drive-In were pretty decent and oh well the new band of former-At The Drive-In guitarist, "Sparta" is pretty cool as far as lyrics and song meanings are concerned either

Dave Matthews Band
Liz Phair
Weezer
REM
Cold Play
there are a lot more, some of the ones mentioned in this thread too.
I think every band puts lots of meaning to their songs but Personally I'd say Brand New..I've been listenin to The quiet things... alot lately and it's got really deep meaning, or at least to me check this:I contemplate the day we wed
I contemplate the day we wed
Your friends are boring me to death
Your veil is ruined in the rain
By then it's you I can do without
There's nothing new to talk about
And though our kids are blessed
Their parents let them shoulder all the blame.....

I like Brand New, that's lame though when it comes down to deep meanings

Brand New, Bright Eyes and ASL use all those metaphors and stuff in their songs.
but i love tbs, goo goo dolls and olp songs. i like their meanings.
I don't know I liked that part..it made me think about marriage..and it's pretty true I think it gets to a point when there's nothin new to talk about.. anyway..

you mean;
"don't throw it all away
no one day's the same
you must realize
it's all in your mind
don't emphasise the pain
on one particular day
if you feel you're starting to slide
just pull yourself together
remember all that matters
is you try"
...then he shot himself in the face and took the band with him

they still SOUND the same, but their lyrics lost all meaning, they used to be inspiring and uplifting, now they're just going for the "it's punk to be angry, and yell words we don't understand at authority"
in closing... DOWN WITH (insert form of government x__________)

A small handful of you probably know who matthew good is and the vast majority of you probably don't. As far as songwriting and putting "meaning" and emotion into songs the guy is untouchable. All his records are amazing not too mention the book he's written and the video's he makes. Try looking on Kazaa for any interviews or commentary he's done then get some of his songs. Good ones to start with would be Suburbia, Apparitions, Strange Days, Truffle Pigs, Advertising On Police Cars, The Workers Sing A Song of Mass Production, Flight Recorder From Viking 7, Running For Home, In A World Called Catastrophe, Avalanche, 21st Century Living. Sorry that list is pretty long but it could have been much longer, he's just that good. I urge you to check out Matt Good, I can't really compare his music to anything else out there.
