Wayne Gretzky. The best hockey player of all time, and before he chose hockey as his only sport he was a great baseball player... once asked to play professionally I believe.

you cant consider one player the greatest athlete. you have to break it down to sports.

baseball - barry bonds (sorry but he is)
football - dan marino (he would get more credit if he would have won a super bowl, but does hold most of the world records at the qb position)
basketball - mj (need i say more, and lebron will probably choke under the fame and hype)
hockey - wayne gretzky (sorry if i spelled it wrong, total donminance, no one compares to him in hockey)
golf - tiger woods (when isnt he winning? this guy has won 9 out of the 14 majors so far this year)
biking - lance armstrong (5 tour de france titles and hes american)
i dont feel like naming anymore

Baseball - Barry Bonds in not the best baseball player ever....Babe Ruth? Mickey Mantel? Ted Williams?

Football - Jim Brown, maybe Jerry Rice

Basketball- obviously MJ, no question

Hockey - Wayne Gretzky, maybe Gordie Howe

Golf - you don't have to be an athlete to play golf....

Biking - def. Lance Armstrong...could anyone even name another cyclist?

barry bonds is not the greatest player ever. willie ways is way better. so is babe ruth. if ruth and mays started playing ball in this era, they would hit 90 homers a season. and they wouldn't need the steroids.

Golf - you don't have to be an athlete to play golf....

yes you do, have you ever golfed? its hard to keep the damn ball straight and its hard to putt.

but about skateboarding RODNEY MULLEN anyone heard of him? come on he invented street skating. he invented like maybe 100 tricks including the 360 flip i think varial, this guy made street skating what it is today. he is fucking amazing easily the best skater ever.

and about bmx definately dave mirra, first to pull off the double backflip. come on man. that right there is enough.

and the reason i said bonds is because he does have 500 stolen bases to go with his (at his pace) new home run record. he will be the first and probably only for a long time to accomplish that.

i didn't say it didn't take skill, and talent...i just said they aren't athletes.

I'd have to say MJ... complete dominance for six years, plus being OK at baseball more than qualifies him.

barry bonds is definatley not the greatest player. It is Babe Ruth by far. He brought baseball from a sport that no one cared about to America's past time just by hitting home runs. without him there would be no barry bonds or anyone else good. Bonds is good but he has never led his team to a championship which is a key factor. homeruns have just become something common and it isnt as great as it used to be. once mcgwire hit 70, the value in a homerun declined

being as i will probably be drafted next year for baseball, i know a fair share of players talents. since it is one of my biggest loves.

statistically barry bonds is unqeustionably the greatest baseball player ever.

but babe ruth gets my vote for doing what he did in an era where parks were longer, the ball was looser, and the bats were made of regular wood. plus he was a VERY good pitcher in the major league too.

and he did it when he his pre-game snack was 5 shots of bourbon and 8 hot dogs.

my true love is boxing and professional fighting.

ali/sugar ray robinson/rjj are the three most talented boxers in history as far as athleticism goes. willie pep is up there also.

fighting- rickson gracie, randy couture, sakuraba, bas rutten, frank shamrock.
