Boys Like Girls (http://www.myspace.com/boyslikegirls) cracked the Billboard 200 for the first time this week (#179) by selling around 6500 copies of their self titled debut. Total sales are right around 80k.

They've been selling consistently each week. The new music video should continue to push them up into more people's radar.

I cant wait for them to blow up. They deserve every bit of it. I've seen them 5 times now, and at the last show martin pointed me out in the crowd and was like,"Hey man, I know you. Wassup? Enjoy the show!"

I find it funny that they started off pretty horribly and have since started to catch on.
They're still pretty blah, but some of the stuff has grown on me. Maybe it'll keep getting better if I give it a few more spins.

Awesome, they completely deserve this. Though I have to admit it hurt a bit when I heard them right after a Fergie song but I guess it'll be okay. I swear I'm starting to think everytime I hear a new band that I get really into, they blow up not to long afterwards, ext. Red Jumpsuit, saw them with The Starting Line and Cartel last March. Cartel, my friend told me about them about a year and a half ago when he called me from one of their shows to let me hear them. Panic! I got their album when it came out in '05 because I had heard their demos. I could go on...

I don't think they deserve this. Thunder and the great escape are both good songs, but everything else from this band is lackluster at best. I've seen them live and what not, and it just sounds like a pop/punk band from back when pop/punk got huge, and I don't mean the pop/punk infused with emo, I mean the straight up pop/punk. They are just very bland, and not interesting to watch live. The show I went to of theirs, the singer did stick around out by the merch table after the show to meet their fans, which I think is very admirable and more bands should do that nowadays, but when I went to talk to him he just seemed like a douche. Like I was wasting his time or something. It felt like he was just going through the motions. Now I'm not one of those guys who is just like, oh they were signed to a major label without paying their dues so they suck. If you're good, you deserve that right away. It's smarter to go to a large indie first, cause then you'll have a dedicated fan base behind you(like Fall Out Boy), but it's still well deserved.
These guys could've used a couple years of paying their dues though. It would've helped their song writing as well as their egos (based completely off the attitude of the singer).
Mark my words, this time next year, no one will remember or care about BLG.

I liked the first few tracks on this cd at first.. and now I am sick of it. I agree that there are only 2 or 3 worthwhile songs, and those are catchy for about 10 listens, after which I try to stab people who listen to them. But.. I'm UNBELIEVABLY INDIE, so that's probably why, right?
Besides, there are tons of bands who have done the same thing, and they deserve the success for writing a couple of solid radio hits.. so congrats are in order...

HA! That's a joke...I don't know about the show you went to, but they had the entire crowd going during the tour with Cartel. There were plenty of people singing a long to every song, and they really have a strong following already. Whether they deserve the success with their first album or not, there will be plenty of buzz for their sophomore effort.

First off, AMAZING! This is a big thing for them to get on the charts. CONGRATS
Now in response to a few of the replies:
They DO write their own music. While some people don't write their own things, they sure do. So to say people associated with them should be ashamed is ludicrous
To the person who said that Martin is a douche: It has to hard being thrown into the spotlight. I'm sure he is dealing with things and no one is expected to be happy 24/7. Give the guy some credit. Ive been at shows where he is mobbed and seems like he can't catch a breath. If you were in the same situation with having people yell "OMG ITS MARTIN" and running after you, I'm sure you would be a little distant at times.
They are obviously doing something right because you know who they are, and are talking about them (good or bad).
I dislike their album, but I still love The Great Escape.

People need to stop being so negative. This band works so hard, they have been on tour for what seems like forever (and don't seem to be slowing down with a spot on the HGB tour and a summer on warped) , get a lot of push from their label, and are all really nice, well rounded down to earth guys. Even if your not a fan of their music, congrats are still in order for their hard work paying off and being sucsessful at getting their music out there. Kudos.

Actually Another Thing That Helped Give Them A Big Push Last Week Is That They Were Featured In The TARGET Ad As A New Release Last Week And It Was Like $7.99 Or Something I Don't Know If They Goofed Or It Was Just Re-released Since They Had Been Upstreamed?

I don't understand why everyone gives these guys props and rips on bands like Simple Plan. Both are just kids with guitars writing catchy songs. I don't give a shit about dues being paid or not but, it's just amazing to me that people are behind BLG but rip Simple Plan and Good Charlotte apart. Please, feel free to argue, though keep in mind if you're under 17, you probably don't have anything smart to say, and if you use the word "gay" as an adjective frequently, you probably are a moron.

Almost no one gives this band props. They are bashed a lot around here. But I agree, there is really no reason to give any music an extrememe amount of shit and refer to it as 'gay'. However, your sweeping generalization about anyone under 17 is extremly hypocritcal. You are acting just like the thoughtless mornons you are harping about. Pick a point you want to make and stick with it.

Hey Snowpeach,
Of course I can't generalize about everyone under 17 as that would be unfair. However, ever read the journals on this site? If so, you might understand why I'm hesitant. But again, I do apologize to you under 17 who do have brain cells.

Congrats to BLG, they deserve some credit after all this time.
I had no idea this band was anywhere near big enough to sell 80k.
Their CD is very good, but they are DDDD-BAGGSS. I was happy about this until I saw them live and they were not nice people by any means.

I have occasionaly read the journals, and have even used them for a bit of a chuckle. Of course some younger people are idiots, but some older people are as well. I just wanted to make the point that age does not necessarily correspond with intellegence. And thank you for appologizing (even though I'm actually 18), it was a very mature thing to do.

I am happy for these boys.
All opinions are great but there will always be some counter action to what somebody says.
Sure YOU may think they are not great but obviously there are A LOT of people out there that do to make them be in the Top 200 on Billboard.
As for them "them being douche bags" and "not paying dues" is just some of the dumbest shit I have heard.
First off they are only human and people have bad days. So if they do come off as douche bags its probably not intentional. I've talked to them so many times they are some of the nicest and genuine dudes ever.
As for "paying their dues" they have. They are working hard for what they want and they are getting there.

RESPONSE TO EVERYTHING.
okay. i've known this band since june of last year. i listen to their music all the time. i know them pretty well (as people). so. i know my shit, basically.
i am 17. by the way. and yes i do have a brain. =)
these guys deserve everything they've gotten. since the very first time i saw them i've known they're going to be huge. they're fucking catchy, they're attractive (which sadly enough does matter at this point.. and trust me... i wish it wasn't like that) and they're very sweet people, as douche-baggy they can be after a show. i mean, wouldn't you be a bit overwhelmed if all of a sudden you had girls calling themselves "Mrs. Paul DiGiovanni" (yes, a real myspace profile right there) and flipping a shit cause they spotted you? seriously. they still get nervous. they're all so young.
but at the same time i knew this was coming. they put out an extremely solid album. even friends who despise them agree that it is.
"paying your dues"... every member of this band has been playing shitty clubs and basements for years. they've slaved away in other bands. they payed their dues just like any other band.
don't hate them until you have a good reason.
i wish them the best.

why band in quotes? they are an actual, real live band you know.
the deal with the record is that three members were in a band together, they made the deal, added paul, and became boys like girls. they'd been playing music together for ages.
and catchy is why they're popular. i love martin's lyrics, all of them are amazing musicians (two were accepted into berklee, which is NOT easy) and i overall love their music.
please don't judge me because i'm a young girl. thats just plain fucking stupid. i know SO many guys and older people that listen to them. and just because i'm a young girl... so what? i don't like them cause OMGZZZ THEY'RE HOTT LOL i like them because of the music.

It's not fighting; just most of us who are commenting have been with this band for over a year or almost a year. So when people question their integrity and what they do for a living without knowing them, we are going to get on the defense because obviously we want the best for them.
Who cares if someone is under age and liking them? Music isn't about age limits, it's about if you like the music and have an appreciation for it.
I'm not saying you have to like/love Boys Like Girls because everyone has their opinions. All I'm saying is that you shouldn't judge a band without knowing them and saying they aren't grateful or deserving of what they have achieved. That is what really got me upset, is someone saying they haven't paid there dues or are ungrateful. You clearly don't know them, so there is no point in trying to get you to understand what they have done. Because clearly you are basing your judgment on a one time meeting, at least that is what is seems like.

that happens to alot of bands because the money is initially not fully behind alot of bands and its a risk to throw and blow your wad right out the gate. If the record picks up momentum, stake holders go, ok this is moving lets put more money behind. Same thing happened with Yellowcard on Ocean Ave

I wonder where popular main stream music is in 2007.
I noticed a little something a couple years ago when this really terrible band called The Click Five came out.
All the girls who were listening to N'sync and all that trash in the late 90s were now listening to what they called "punk rawk". After speaking with a girl who was really into the The Click Five, I realized something. Cookie cutter bullshit "punk" music was going to take over the main stream.
What im trying to get at... is Boys like Girls = N'sync 2007 with guitars.
Just pretty faces. Instead of dance moves.. it's who can do the better guitar around the shoulder move. They're still wearing clothes that you can see their bodies.. tight shirts and tighter pants
Just some more popular music to sell cds to 13 year old girls who can't think for them selves.
