View Full Version : Grindhouse Splitting Up Into Two Movies?

" Movie mogul Harvey Weinstein (http://imdb.com/name/nm0005544/) is planning to re-release Grindhouse (http://imdb.com/title/tt0462322/) as two separate films - after the double-bill flopped at the box office. The film, a double-feature directed by Quentin Tarantino (http://imdb.com/name/nm0000233/) and Robert Rodriguez (http://imdb.com/name/nm0001675/) made just $11.6 million in its opening weekend in the US. Producer Weinstein is disappointed - and thinks Tarantino's Death Proof, starring Kurt Russell (http://imdb.com/name/nm0000621/), and Rodriguez' Planet Terror, with Rose McGowan (http://imdb.com/name/nm0000535/), will perform better on their own. He tells PageSix.com, "I don't think people understood what we were doing. The audience didn't get the idea that it is two movies for the price of one. I don't understand the math, but I want to accommodate the audience. "
I read this yesterday and was extremely disgusted.

Probably a good idea. They were really out on a limb hoping Americans would embrace this concept anyway. Most people don't like sitting in theaters that long and no one makes a whole night out of the theater anymore which is what this movie was trying to recreate. Also, for a Tarantino film (or part of it at least) it didn't seem to have much hype behind it for some reason. On their own they should perform better though.

Terrible idea. I hope I can catch the flicks before they slice them up.

Yeah, I put this in the grindhouse thread yesterday. I agree, I think it's a horrible idea. I think they should just realize that it probably wasn't the smartest idea to release it over Easter weekend, and focus on putting out a great DVD.

Bad idea, but I can see where the Weinstein company is coming from. At least they gave it a chance to work, which is more to say that if another company had handled the project.

This is what I thought as well. I don't really like seeing movies at the cinema anyway, let alone 2. It's unique, and I think splitting it up will ruin that aspect of the "movies". That said, I'm in no rush to see Grindhouse. The trailer didn't even appeal that much to me actually.
Honestly, I don't think either of the movies could hold up on their own--for me, it was the whole double-feature thing that made me like it so damn much.

Unfortunately they were trying to sell people on an idea that just isn't timed right to succeed with the current culture.

yea its really sad it did so poorly at the box office. fucking america, people have such shit taste here. and yea i also read on rottentomatoes that they wanted to release the movies separately on DVD as well.

The DVD's will be seperated.
They said it would be regular releases, then directors cut later... probably to get some more money from the tanking numbers.
I only liked Planet Terror. I hope Death Proof continues to bomb.

the tarantino film was way too short to hold up on its own.

i dont see how they could not do the dvd's together AND separate, it would be an awful idea to JUST do them separate.

ADD?
I don't see why so many people are saying Death Proof wasn't good; I thought it was very good.
Oh, and a lot of people seem to not understand what these films are supposed to be like so they think it just looks "retarded".
the tarantino film was way too short to hold up on its own.
Weinstein said they would add footage to it.

well, both films were filmed seperately as full films with a lot more footage, which are getting released seperately and in full outside of the u.s. to theatres. which is what would be released on the dvds.

I cant beleive Tarantino would let him do this.

i was just saying the tarantino movie, while it was the MUCH better of the two, seemed quite short, and not something i'd pay 9 bucks for to see at the theater. with planet terror, however, its worth the price of admission. i love this and i wish they would do it again.
if you live in chicago, the music box is doing like a midnight grindhouse type thing (i think) once a week. check it out. not sure how long its running.

the original plans were to release them seperate internationally, so the idea isn't entirely new.
however, i think this movie has a very strong shot of having a stronger second weekend than first. people don't want to sit through three hours of movies, but once word of mouth gets out that it's worth it, the hesitant people will go out.
not to mention it's not easter weekend, so the chances of all three family films beating them again aren't as strong.
if it has a second weekend equal to or better than opening weekend, then this talk will go away.

Second might be true, but the first isn't. I have heard other stories of how Rodriquez an Tarantino came up with the idea.
If they were split in two I'm not sure it would have been as enjoyable
It's not "interesting," it's fucking ridiculous--they should be seen TOGETHER.
PunkDrums182

First off, HIGHLY doubt it's stolen. Second, I don't think they should be split up, but maybe it's a marketing ploy to get people to rush to the theaters before it splits?
The Grindhouse concept is an old theater style anyways. Sure maybe he adapted the idea of 2 exploitation films in one movie with fake trailers...but that was nothing original.
I dunno.

supposedly people have been leaving after the first movie since they are idiots...and because sales have been lacking they are thinking of splitting them in two so people are less confused.
ps: what is wrong with the people of today?

I hope they don't split them up, because to be completely honest, I don't think either movie is good enough to stand on its own as a legitimate movie. It needs to be in the grindhouse format.

There were about 7 people in teh theather when I saw it not including my 2 brothers. No one left early. I assumed to crowd was slack cause it was a matinee.
We were the first ones in the theater so my little brother and I assumed it was a good Idea to race from the screen to the top row and back. It's so much fun to be teh first in teh theater

Haha, I didn't even see your initial suggestion. Sorry I locked the original one, but I'm glad I rectified it for you. Thanks for pointing out a grievance too...I'm just trying to make things better for everyone. Anytime something seems off, don't hesitate to tell/correct/point out to me.

Grindhouse was awesome, I saw it in a packed theater and people were goin nuts. Probably one of the better times that I've had at a movie theater in...ever.
When I described the movie to a lot of my friends to try to get them to go with me, they all said "oh...that's confusing. Let's go to Hill Have Eyes 2"
I told them I'd rather burn my ten dollar bill, personally.
