Released November 29th, 2005
Red Stapler Records

Who?

DC indie-punks Gist wrap their heads around sludgier aspects of their city's historical scene, ultimately failing in revealing anything besides the fact that greatness is hard to replicate.

How Is It?

Diesel City has its ass so pitched on the pickets of the fence it sits on, its hard to tell when to expect Gist to delight or displease. They have some solid foreplay in songs such as "Things Will Work Out" and "Asunder", but even with the album's best songs the band fails to cling to any worthwhile sound. Instrumentation consists of garage-dwelling, rusty-hinged power chords, leathery bass lines, and an underwhelming percussion backbone. Nayan Bhula's voice is just as varied; from the terribly irritating ("Teen Agers") to the admissible ("Miscellaneous"). For those interested in a sound that wouldn't be far from what Superchunk would be like if it consisted of a trio of 45 year-olds trying their hand at this "punk thing", check out Gist.
