Sense they’re a huge part of our military and because they’re just fucking cool this is the special forces thread. My favorite has to go to delta or the new task force 20.
Tell stories if you got them or just tell us your fav.

My roommate is hardcore military, trying to get into the special forces (Canadian, JTF-2) so he got me interested
You can't beat the SAS. They were the original, and they're the best.
The Sayaret Metkal in Israel are pretty hardcore as well.

I was watching a show abuot terrorism and all the special units that fight it. Theres a division called dss. they look pretty badass. its like the cia but they're one huge secret. They interviewed retired agents and they couldnt show their faces, and they had to change their voice.
has anyone seen basic? section 8.....thats badass too, i wish it was real

I guess it depends on the situation. Most military types and special forces guys will tell you that the world's best are either the Navy SEALs or the British SAS.
There is no REAL way to determine who is the best really. Each unit is proficient in what they do, weather it's military action or anti-terrorism.

Most of these special forces units have a "green" force (for special ops) and a "black" force (for counter terrorism). The members of each force switch up every couple of months.
Most of the stuff I've read gives the impression that the SAS are better than their American counterparts (and indeed, any internation counterparts) mainly due to their experience.
Canada has spent millions creating JTF-2, but until Afghanistan, they hadn't seen any real conflict. Delta and the SEALs have obviously seen a fair amount of action, but the SAS has (well, had) to deal with the IRA on a constant basis, so they were always on top of their game.
On a side note, Canadian snipers had more kills than any other unit in Afghanistan. Go Canada!

Good point Ronin. US Special Forces haven't been around long at all, compaired to other countries. The SAS is pre-WW1, while the SEALs were created in 1962, and Delta was made in the late 70's. We did have the Rangers in WW2, but they are nowhere near the status now as Seals or Delta.
From various things I have read, there is quite a fierce, but friendly, competition between Seals and SAS. They train with each other all the time.
There also quite a few ex-SAS that are in Delta Force. I read a book on DF and was quite surprised to see they basically handpicked the best of the bestfrom SAS, Seals, Rangers, Force Recon, and even a few guys from Germany's GSG-9 and one of their top guys is, or was, a big shot from the Isreali ilitary.

I think the SAS was started during the desert campaigns of WW2 by David Stirling and Patty Murphy(?)
But yeah, how obvious is it that I'm a bit of a special forces nerd?

SAS is badass...delta and seals are pretty gnarly too, and the israeli's are not to be messed with, special forces or not.
also, in terms of espionage/secret agents, my vote would go to the Israelis first, then MI6 in Britain, and possibly the NSA somewhere near the top...

The Israeli intelligence agency (Mossad) is badass. Have you ever read "Gideon's Spies"?

It's all about the Mossad. Some really amazing stories such as;
- France built some ships for Israel, but due to political circumstances, they were kept docked in France and witheld from the Israelis. The Mossad pulled an operation and sailed the ships out of port, right under their fucking noses.
- They stole a MiG from Iraq. The guy just flew straight to Israel.
It's real cut-throat James Bond stuff. Apparently some of it is exaggerated (and you can tell), but it's a damn good read.

lets not forget SWAT, they are badass as well...remember that show on the USA network, where they had SEALs, Rangers, Green Barrets, Delta, and SWAT guys, and they had to do different missions, it was called Combat Challenge, or something like that, and SWAT won the whole thing...

Well, every government needs elite teams of soldiers to take care of the really messy situations. They pretty much started with Britain's Special Air Services during WW2, which was a group of soldiers put together for really hardcore raids in the desert. After the 1976 (?) Olympic massacre of Israeli atheletes, and the 1980 (?) Iranian Embassy hostage situation in London (in which the SAS showed the world exactly how hardcore they were) most nations recognized te need for special forces units, not just for military operations, but to deal with terrorism.
Special forces are usually deployed to hostage situations, or dropped in small groups behind enemy lines. Before most wars, special forces are inserted into a country to perform reconnaisance and take out particular targets. They fucking rule, and they're next to impossible to get into.
The US has;
Navy SEALs (in particular DEV-GRU 6, which is the anti-terrorism unti)
Army Rangers (not really all that great compared to the rest)
Green Berets (usually responsible for training foreign armys)
DELTA (the best of the best)
Canada has JTF-2
Germany has GSG-9
France has the GIGN (which is actually just a branch of their police force)
Australia has their own SAS
These are the the main special forces units in the world, but pretty much every country has one. They're often trained by Green Berets or the SAS.

Haha, and proud of it.
Like I said before, my roommate is training for this, and he's incredibly smart, so basically I get daily leassons on it.
Everyone who digs the special forces should read Rainbow 6 by Tom Clancy (obviously fiction)
For non-fiction, I'd recommend
Gideon's Spies (more spy stuff)
Bravo Two Zero and Immediate Action by Andy McNab
Close Quarter Battle by Mike Curtis
Those last 3 books are all about the SAS, but they discuss other special forces units as well. And like I said, all special forces units are basically modeled on the SAS.
And I think Tom Clancy has a non-fiction book about US special forces, and I believe the uninventive title was "Special Forces"

yeah the US had the OSS also in WW2, they were based on the SAS...
and i think the rangers are somewhat large unit, they are like an elite division, or other large group of soldiers where the others are are much smaller...i think there is something like a few hundred SEALS in service...
