Sick Puppies - Dressed Up As Life
Release Date: April 3, 2007
Record Label: Virgin Records

Virgin Records seemed like a label that was doing quality work as of late. Collaborations with K-Os, Over It, The Starting Line, Fountains of Wayne, and We Are Scientists are all solid indicators of a label trying to issue some credible music. However, with the unlikely, yet astronomical successes of bands like The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and 30 Seconds To Mars, it has become quite clear to the suits exactly what sells. And from this ultra-brilliant realization comes the bland kind of crap in which the Sick Puppies deal and peddle to the masses.

Since I am not from Australia, I do not know what that country's musical landscape is like. Whatever state it might be in, it has fostered a level of success for the Puppies to prompt Virgin to release their album, Dressed Up As Life, over here in the states. I would like to think, then, that down under, they have never heard of Hinder, Chevelle, Finger Eleven, and the myriad of other bands that are churning out this plain-vanilla type of radio-made pop-rock. Because if they had, they would hopefully realize there is absolutely nothing new about Sick Puppies, and less than an ounce of appeal in their conformity - little to elevate them to a position of acceptability. Nevertheless, their record has dropped on the unsuspecting (and ideally apathetic) masses in the States, and yes, it is as bad as you would imagine.

Sonically, the band has the type of sound that is just about eight years too late to have any tangible impact of any sort. Frontman Shimon Moore turns up the angst meter past 7, trying to sound oh-so-tough, dropping juvenile turns of phrase and needless profanity (Parental Advisory stickers are so hardcore) on top of overproduced instrumental backdrops. There is plenty of lamenting how awful life is (the aptly named "Pitiful") and how terrible parents can be (subtly dubbed "Asshole Father"...classy, eh?) You know the woe-is-me drill by now. Musically, Moore and his band borrow plenty of dumbed-down Nickelback guitar crunch and sadly enough, swipes its better riffage from Halifax ("Deliverence") and Trapt ("Issues"). Were this not enough, tracks like the single "All The Same" would sit right at home on a mixtape with Hinder's "Lips of an Angel" while others could be Staind, Puddle of Mudd, or Exies b-sides. Not exactly the highest of accolades but it could well find its audience.

In the end, there is very little to applaud about Sick Puppies. The band is about as fake and contrived as musical acts get - it is never a good sign when you nod to "additional writers" on your liner note credits. And from there, to go on and credit Rage Against The Machine and Green Day as your influences? That takes equal parts balls and insanity. So really, if not for authenticity, at least the band could offer up an engaging sound. Instead, we get second-rate, overwrought vocals, repetitive riffs, middle school lyrics, and some of the most extraneous production this side of a Breaking Benjamin record. Someone can tell Virgin Records that America is manufacturing one-dimensional, warmed-over bands in droves; we don't need to start importing them from Australia.

Hinder, Nickelback, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Hoobastank, Chevelle, Finger Eleven

Australia has some great bands that have never caught on in America: The Living End and Bodyjar come to mind.

I agree - Bodyjar especially and TLE are solid. These guys, however, are not.

Now watch these turds tell more than those bands combined.

I definitely agree, this album blows. Some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard.

While I am sure that the Sick Puppies are pure drivel, I actually find it a slight to Finger Eleven that you would claim that they sound alike. Listen to their full albums before slamming them for writing "One Thing", which I guess is the sum total of your exposure to them since you called them pop/rock.

Well written review. Although I can think of far worse bands that are churning out what they think is music.

Definitely agree. There are way better artists from Australia. Even though I honestly don't listen to that many bands from Australia Silverchair are brilliant.

I take it I was the only one who enjoyed this record and their live show?
Lyrically awful. I know that, but hell, it's quality 90s-sounding melodic rock.
we've heard it before...but these guys aren't like Hinder or Nickelback awful.

Upside?
It still beat Good Charlotte by 25%

As far as Australia goes, I'm a big fan of The Living End and Youth Group.

I can't listen to the album I've tried, but I can't.

However, that being said, our radio station had a $.99 show with these folks, and it was honestly one of the best times I've ever had. They were a ton of fun live, hung around to meet everybody, probably the nicest band I've ever met.

Yeah, their lyrics could've been written in third grade, no denying that here. But if these guys are swinging through your town for cheap, go see them, it'll be a good time.

For a guy who's a writer in a website controlled by FOB, P!ATD and other "TRL bands" fans, calling Chevelle and Finger Eleven "plain-vanilla type of radio-made pop-rock", is very hypocritical.

It's kinda like Clay Aiken calling Chuck Norris a "pussy".

First of all, Panic and FOB's popularity on this site have nothing to do with my frame of reference. And if you thikn that Chevelle or F11 have nearly as much edge as they used to, then you are terribly mistaken.

I agree with you on Finger Eleven. Their new album is aweful and unoriginal but their first and second album were great. Chevelle's new albums is great too. I was surprised to see that they went heavier on this instead of going mellow like other bands did.

Fair enough...I have yet to listen to the newest Chevelle record, but their last few efforts have been rather uninspired.

the sick puppies CD is amazing. the production is amazing. the songwriting is class A. The singer and the whole band are great musicians. I hate Hinder & Nickelback - not really a legit or valid comparison. Breaking Benjamin is amazing and their production is amazing is well - but it appears this is a forum for crappy indie emo punk bands who can't write songs, can't sing & can't play instruments - the absolute worst form of nothing music, so your opinion is completely irrelevant.

C'mon guys... I think this is a bit harsh of a review. I will take this sick puppies album over most other emo and crappy rock bands making it big right now. I agree that is has obvious overtones of Finger Eleven, etc... but it still has enough originality to seperate them from the others that have influenced them. Actually, if you give it a good listen musically, you'll find a large number of very cool time changes/signatures involved with most of the songs. The bass definitely helps set their sound apart. The occasionally "slappy" bass riffs really drive things... and I love hearing a good bass slap. Buy hey, it's not for everyone. I grew up worshipping grunge in the 90's and the only thing I really get to hold onto now is a new TOOL album every 5 years. Finger Eleven is great, but their last album bombed... Tip is still their best creation. Grunge is dead, but if freakin' POP and crappy boy bands can make a comeback, then I think it's about time for a grunge revival... maybe we can find a new way to revolutionize rock again... this emo just ain't doin' it.

I have hust recently started listening to Sick Puppies but they are now at the top of my list. They have a good sound to them and Shimon Moores voice is awsome and Emma rocks the bass even though her voice is a little to deep for my liking. They touch many issues in there album that I can relate to so who ever does like them go screw yourselves.

Has anyone else noticed that the bridge of "All The Same" is eerily similar to the bridge of "Higher" by Creed? Hmmmmm.....

Their newest album Polar Opposite is really good as well! I love it so much, i just love dancing and singing to it. I can relate to the lyrics and the melodies are just amazing. I have learned to play some of their songs on guitar off that album! :)
