I had one of these the other day, my first time, and it was terrifying, I thought I was dying. The random thing is, I wasn't even particulary stressed at the time.
Does anyone know how you can stop them?
Otherwise I'm putting myself on a shit load of pills to avoid ever having one of them again.

Go for a walk...no drug (prescription or not) works. All you can do is go for a walk.

no, he's right.
a panic attack is all just a head trip. you dont have to rely on medication to get you through.

I used to get them all the time; they stopped be from being able to have driving lessons. They're much more sporadic now, thank fuck, and i'm starting my lessons up soon. I was put on Seroxat, which helped to some degree, but i heard that this drug is met with some apprehension over there in the states, so i daren't reccomend it. Plus it gave me some savage side-effects.
Sorry, that wasn't very helpful. You can get some herbal stuff which some friends have said works wonders. Also some "grounding" techniques work, where you carry something small in your pocket that means alot to you, and you kinda use it to bring yourself round with powerful concentration.
Weird, i know, but apparently very effective.

So do I, but once I get walking it levels me out and calms me down. I'm not saying go running, but just for a slow walk to clear your head.

My friend's father got drunk and threatened to kill her mother, with a gun in hand. The next day she had a real panic attack at school.

This man speaks sense.
I had a panic attack last year in the city (March 30th, remember it like it was yesterday). I was crying uncontrollably. I hyperventilated. I was like a zombie afterwards. I met up with my girlfriend at the time, she could apparently not tell I was in a bad way, and uh, broke up with me :|
I was stressed at the time; new job, my family and girlfriend expecting me to "do really well". I could not find a place to park my car and was running late to meet my girlfriend. That is essentially what triggered it. I was depressed at the time but I had never had a panic attack.
I did not realize until December that I had, in fact, had a panic attack. In my sheer despair during the attack, I smashed my fist on my steering wheel and refractured the hand I had already broken 4 bones in :(
It was fucking horrible.
Go for a walk. Fuck Pfizer, Roche and company, the youth of today do not need their poison sedatives fucking up how we think.

I've had panic attacks before and I guess they've only gotten better with age. I used to get them when I thought I did something wrong (I was thought of as the perfect child), so I had to learn how to accept my imperfections. I'm sorry that I don't have any real advice. I wish you luck.

i agree to a point. i think that doctors are overmedicating us today, no doubts. but sometimes psychiactric medication does help, like depression medication. i know a lot of people it has helped, but i do know some who it has hindered, in a BIG way. my personal view is that you should try and tackle your issues first yourself, and then with therapy, friends, and social interactions. leave medication as a last resort. but thats just me.

Meditiation, yoga, all that sort of stuff. Some breathing exercises calm you down and really help.

I used to get them randomly, a lot of times laying in bed or sitting down. Only I didn't know they were panic attacks at the time; I thought something was wrong with my heart and I was going to die. I went to the ER a couple of times and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. Well once I found out it was panic attacks I realized it was all mental and there was nothing to worry about, and they pretty much stopped. Just try to realize that it is all in your head and that you are going to be perfectly fine. I think I had them due to depression; eh just do what you can to not be depressed.
That's kind of crappy advice though, really sorry.
I wouldn't reccommend going on drugs though.

I think if they carry on then you should talk to your doctor there could be a medical reason for your panic attacks. The sooner you find out the better. You're only going to put your life on hold if you don't get this sorted. It's not right for you to be scared of just getting these panic attacks, if you have a reason for them, then you can learn how to control and prevent them.

Talk to some one you trust about them ((i.e. a doctor)) and tell them all about your symptoms, and what it feels like when you think you're getting a panic attack. I used to get panic attacks all the time, because i used to get stressed over everything. I still get them to this day, just in fewer numbers. Just don't let every little thing get to you, and you should see an improvement, lol.
I would have to say though, the worst time i had a panic attack was a couple weeks ago when i had two in one day. :( That was one of the worst days of my life
