This thread has probably been done a thousand times, but I'm too lazy to find out. I'm just curious, what instrument do you play?

I play bass.

teaching myself 6string. the only musicians in my family live in virginia (across the state) and most of the kids i know are useless in the instrument department... so i'm doing the 'i'm cool because i learned without lessons' thing. someone who knows what the hell they're doing on a guitar: all power chords are moveable right? so does that mean that, no matter what the root is, the 2nd and 3rd fingers are always up a step from the root? and are all power chords 5th- and 6th-string based, or can the root be on any of the 6 strings?

edit: and i sing, but i doubt vocal cords count as an instrument in this case.

if youre saying what i think youre saying, all power chords are moveable. BUT, no matter what the root note is, the 2nd finger is 3 and a half steps from the root, and the (optional) 3rd finger is always an octave from the root note. not all root notes have to be on the 5th or 6th string. it can be on any string but the 1st, although, power chords dont really sound that good past the 5th or 6th string, most guitarists just move the root up on the 5th string.
