View Full Version : I need advice for Bulimia / Binging.

This morning, my friend told me that he binges. He'll go for 2-3 days without eating anything at all, and then at night, he'll eat mass amounts of food. After that, he'll eat things that make him sick. He's lactose intolerant, so I'm asuming something with milk in it.

He's always been a really skinny boy, and doesn't like it, which causes problems with insecurity and self confidence. He's finally realizing that he has a problem and that he needs help, and he's coming to me with it. He really doesn't have anyone to talk to about important stuff like this, and I'm really worried about him.

I had somewhat of the same issues, but didn't recieve help the same way. I was just wondering if you guys knew of any hot lines or self help things. Someone mentioned overeaters anonymous, but I'm looking for something more self-helpish.

Any advice would be great.

i myself have eating issues. i dont know how to 'fix' this problem. you wont be able to help him on your own. really. he has to realize his problems himself, or he will never be able to recover. how can you help yourself if you dont think anything is wrong?
your best bet is to talk to him. ask him why he binges. how often he does. be there for him- a shoulder to lean on. thats what i needed to help with my issues. turns out it wasnt food or weight that was bothering me, but other issues in life.

i hope this helps.
sorry i couldnt help more. and NEVER be afraid of adult help. sometimes, those hospitals know what they're doing.

In no way am I trying to be a dick, I'm just confused. He's skinny, but doesn't like it, so he's bulimic?

he needs to see a counselor or nutritionist. As much as you try, you won't be able to help and the longer you wait, the worse he'll get.

He'll eat mass amounts of food, probably to gain weight. But he'll feel bad about doing it, so he'll eat something to make himself sick.

He can't afford one / doesn't want one. I'm looking for more of a self help thing.

i have two friends with eating disorders.
and i've realized you can't fix it yourself.
my one friend got the idea in her mind that she's fixed it and is okay now, when she really isn't at all.
you need to talk to an adult and get him some serious help.

To me he sounds bulimic. And if he declares it as a problem, in some places you don't need to pay for a counsellor. I have one for free, but for another reason, although I did have an eating disorder, went down to a really dangerous weight and realised there was something wrong.

Remember, even doctors have to swear confidentiality if he wants it. If not, you can sue em.

I'm looking for more of a self help thing.

use you as an example, i'm sure you've told him of your experience with it and if that doesn't help, tell him the consequences of his actions both short-term and long-term which he should be quite aware of. maybe that's not the greatest advice but take it day to day. he can't quit in a day, but he's won half the battle in realizing his problem.

Unfortunately, I am learning that this is true.

he should stop throwing up so much.

thanks for helping asshole.

on the subject:

This situation is much like any other addiction, he's never going to change unless he truly want to and try to for himself (addition = a ritual/habit, doesn't have to be nicotine or anything). He has obviously taken the first step in speaking out to you. Just be there for him, offer to do anything to help him with this.

I hope he gets better.

I think that counseling to address the underlying issues that cause the binge/purge cycle is the best route. If he's in school. his school should have a counselor, and if not, I bet there are free places to go. I would google search for local places that help people with eating disorders.

This really isn't a self-help kind of thing. I had a friend who was bulimic for years. She was in several treatment programs and had several relapses. Your friend needs to get professional help, or he will slowly kill himself doing this.

tell him to see a nutritionist and get a therapist. my friend went through this and i'm not sure she's totally okay now but she's nowhere near as horrible as she was a year ago. don't let him get to the point where he's throwing up immediately after eating automatically.

Does he really want help?

I mean, 2 of my friends had a similar problem... one of them was in a way happy about it, 'cause it made her gain attention and stuff, while the other one cried like every single night.

I had a similar problem too... and my dad took me to this huge burger place and sat in front of me while he made me eat a double brutal thing .___. It didn't really fix my problem, but at least I noticed he cared and I tried to work myself out of the hole.

I still see myself as fat... and I hate it, but nyeh, at least i eat now.

I had an eating disorder too two years ago , which lead me to a depression ..
Besides needing a nutriotionist , your friend will mostly need a psychologist . Things like that are also due to social problems and self esteem problems . I'm not gonna say that he can be alright forever , because those disorders not always have a cure .
Talk to his parents

I kind of understand what she means. He's self-conscience about it, but he doesn't really do much to try and gain weight in a healthy manner. It's kind of like a drug addiction. The person addicted may not like to use substances, but they still do anyways. At least that's the best way I can think of to put it.

It's true . Once we get this "vice" it's hard to leave it . Body and mind are both too modified , so it is really difficult to get back to normal . You know that you're hurting yourself , but if you don't like your body it's like you don't care about it . Maybe this seems a little confusing , but that's how I think .

Why thank you, in retrospect i lol at my CIWWAF comment, forget that.

By the way I think you have the best music taste of the staff. Absolutepunk needs more punk/ska.

Bad Religion, NOFX, Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, etc.

Thank you dude - I could not agree more. However, I enjoy being the guy who will cover those bands since I've grown up with them and love discussing them

I haven't heard much of GNV FLA on AP since its release, but I think it's their best album post- Anthem. Nothing beats 90's LTJ though... I hope RBF and LTJ tour again together

Is the latest RBF album any good?

It's certainly not their best effort, but I find it to be a fun listen. Worth checking out for sure.
