108 – Creation. Sustenance. Destruction.
Released: July 11th, 2006
Label: Equal Vision Records

I know there are members and users of the AP community that enjoy heavier music. This music ranges from crazy death metal to grindcore to cheesy myspace metal bands with goofy images to anything that sounds powerful. There seems to be a civil war over the classification of bands on the heavier side of the musical spectrum and one genre stands in the middle of it all. Yes, I am talking about hardcore music.

Ah, the ever so wonderful debate of what can be classified as ‘hardcore.’ For me, there is a band and an album that sum up the hardcore genre perfectly - 108’s discography album, Creation. Sustenance. Destruction. This album is a beautiful collection of 37 songs rolled into a 2-disc set. This set does not contain songs from their 2006 release of a 7-song demo CD, but it has original songs from 108’s first four albums and one previously unreleased song titled “Panic”.

I enjoy this album from start to finish. Its tracks display various styles of punk, hardcore and even reggae. You can feel a Bad Brains sort of vibe on a few tracks, which is always a plus in my book. I can also see a little of a metalcore-type vibe with the opening track on the second disc [“Opposition”] which hints to me the sort of sound that label-mates The Hope Con are creating today. There are two discs to this bad boy, and that is a lot of music to enjoy. I could single out every track and list what style of music it is and how it was influential to today's music scene in the punk or hardcore areas. However, I won't bore you with that. Instead, I suggest that you give every track a listen and make your own judgments. You can even play my fun little game and think of bands you enjoy presently that appear to have been influenced by 108 (sometimes termed as the dreaded “ripping off”).

Needless to say, I enjoy the raw sound and emotion on this album as it takes me back to how hardcore and punk music was and should be done. I will go out on a limb and say I am sure many bands playing this style of music have also enjoyed a 108 track or two in their day as well. In addition, I also enjoy the way this album and package was put together. Equal Vision Records did a nice job.

So, buy this album if you are just getting into hardcore music and need a good starting point. Or buy this album if you are already into hardcore type stuff and do not own this release. Be sure to also buy their new 2007 full length (“A New Beat From a Dead Heart”) that comes out in June on Deathwish Inc. Hell, you should even pick up a cool 108 shirt or two as well.... I know I will be.

This is like the ultimate collection of older 108 material, especially for someone like me that didn't have it before. I have to get their newest album though, I've heard it was quite good.
