View Full Version : Am I less of a music lover if...

If I don't know the full story behind every band I listen to?
If I don't know the first and last names of every single member in the bands I listen to?
If I don't know what the lead singer of this band said about the drummer in that band?
If I don't know the juicy gossip behind the bands I listen to?
I feel like LESS of a music lover sometimes.

I come into these forums and read these posts, and people know EVERYTHING about EVERY BAND, and it got me thinking: I love music. I love MUSIC. I don't go out of my way to research much else than maybe who produced their albums, or when they will be swinging through Philadelphia on tour. So, does this make me LESS of a music lover? Or am I the music lover, and THEY are the fans?

Anyone care to answer this for me?

Nah, I don't think it makes you less of a music lover. I think it is good to know a little bit about the bands you are into. It makes it easier to talk in these kind of forums. Just don't let these music snobs on this site get to you. They obviously have no life if all they do is bash people for not knowing every detail about a band.

No, I hate when people say 'being a fan' is knowing every single thing about a band. Completely lame.

04/26/07, 09:59 AM
Those kind of people suck. It gets to the point where these kids don't even care about the music. All of these bands create patterns of vibrations in the air. They arrange these vibrations to express their thoughts and emotions. They are artists and if people feel the need to research more about an artist, that is fine, but it really doesn't matter in the end.

Smash Adams
04/26/07, 10:18 AM
I don't, I for one think you only need to know every member of the band if they're the beatles or led zeppelin

Those type of fans wiki their "favorite bands" all the time just so they can say they know more then someone else... They are just is pissing contests with each other. LAME!!! It's mainly the "hardcore" (a.k.a. screamo-emo) kids anyway... They suck and so does their music.

You obviously can be on different levels of loving music. I'm sure you know a thing or two about your favorite bands, but for some people, learning about them all and learning about the history of music is exciting, and a passion. Not knowing everything about music doesn't mean you like it any less, otherwise we'd all be fucked.

In my experience, it seems most of the people who obsess over certain bands and call themselves real fans, are the same people who pretend they never liked them once that band isn't "cool" anymore.

I think that so long as you have listened to an album to the extent where you know all of the songs, that is when you are a fan of the band, and more than just a casual listener.

It irritates me too, actually. It bothers me to a certain extent when people become enamored with whatever band is "cool". It especially bothers me when the people who do this are oblivious to anything pertaining to the band and as soon as their single stops being played on the radio, they will forget about the band. I also hate it when people latch on to other peoples musical intrests in attempts to look like they actually have semi-decent musical taste. I have a friend who will list her favorite bands and every single one of them are bands that I introduced her to and that she has only listened to because I told her how amazing they are. Be original find a band you like on your own. There is one me in the world, that is quite enough. Thanks.

Yes! That is exactly the situation with my friend. I will take her to shows because I need somebody to go with me and I know she'll be down and then after the show she will brag to people about seeing them even though she had NO idea who anybody was prior to me forcing her to go see them with me. It drives me crazy. I agree about feeling like a music snob but shit I'd rather be a music snob than someone who has no musical individuality at all.

Yeah, this happens to me a lot too. I'm also the person everyone comes to when they want someone to burn them a cd. I hate it when I know for a fact that somebody has probably never heard a song by a band but insists on having me burn them the cd and probably the only reason why they even know the name of the band is because I listed them as one of my favorite bands on Facebook or MySpace. Haha. geesh people. Oh and one last random bitch about people: my friend listed all her favorite bands on Facebook and I introduced her to every single one of them and I know she either doesn't have the cd or if she does I burned it for it within the past month. Apparently, I am a music snob and I am done with my bitch fest. :-)

You are no less of a music fan just because you dont know all of these obscure details. There are a few bands I get obsessive about so i do enjoy finding out about all of these random things but to have this elitist attitude because of what you know about certain bands is ridiculous. With that being said, you are truly out of the loop if you have yet to see Pete Wentz' dick.

I agree with you on that but I also hate in when people think they are more of a fan, or a better and bigger fan, since they found out about a band right when they started. For example, just because I like FOB and found out about them through MTV doesn't mean I only enjoy their singles. I am sure the same can be said about other people for bands like Gym Class Heroes, Taking Back Sunday and others..

i'm not sure if it's ignorance or lack of respect, or maybe they overlap one another. it doesn't worry me one bit if someone doesn't enjoy a classic album, say the likes of 'london calling.' but when they bash it & praise some johnny-come-lately to the music world band over them... it's a bit weird. i mean fair enough if you enjoy that album over a classic, nothing wrong with that whatsoever, each to their own. but i think sometimes the respect is lost on the impact of those bands/albums etc

But it bugs me when people call themselves fans when they don't know any songs, and only think that the band members are hot.

If you like something, I don't think it's bad to take an active interest in whatever band it is and learn a bit more about it. I know where some of my favorite bands came from and what the songs are about, and that makes the experience more interesting, and in my argument, better, because it's that much easier to find a connection with a song. You can love the music, sure, but there is always something deeper.

Well it really pisses me off when people think that you're only a true fan if you know every single detail about the band. Like with Madina Lake... im a big fan, ive been a fan for a few months and uh.. i pretty much got dissed because i didnt know that they got an infection when they were on fear factor and everyone was like.. oooh your new at this arent you? im like.. no im not new to knowing their music.. i could care less about a stupid infection. sheesh. lol. Knowing some facts about bands is called having knowledge. I don't like listening to music and knowing absolutely nothing about the band. And if you like a band, why wouldn't look for their tour dates?

I introduce my friends to alot of music. In fact most of the music they listen to I told them about. They don't know anything about the bands but they know the songs and lyrics. And I think that's all they need.

However, I know alot about my favorite bands. There names, past bands ect. I don't think it makes me more of a fan. Just a more informed fan.

I appreciate everyone's responses.

To some: I didn't really so much feel like LESS of a music lover. I just didn't know if it was more common than I thought to be a "know it all" about bands...

And as this thread has proven, it is not.

So thank you for chatting about this with me friends!

anytime. glad to help

i don't know all the names of some members of my favorite bands. like muse, i know matt bellamy, and i think one of the other members i called dominic? that's about it. if a band has been going for 10+ years, then i'd probably bother to find stuff out about them. if they don't have much of a history i'd just wait until things pop up about them and remember it from then.

Sam Beam of Iron & Wine has two daughters - Arden and Ruth.

I am officially Iron & Wine's biggest fan. :-)
