It may take DNA experts to finally settle the rumors surrounding Curt Schilling's famous bloody sock.
Orioles broadcaster Gary Thorne said on the air Wednesday night that Schilling painted the sock red as a public relations stunt in the Boston Red Sox's Game 6 win over the New York Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series.
Thorne said his source was Boston's backup catcher Doug Mirabelli.
Schilling wore the sock in a masterful pitching effort after an experimental medical procedure to repair an ankle injury. The sock is now in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.
"It was painted. Doug Mirabelli confessed up to it after. It was all for PR," Thorne said during the Orioles-Red Sox game Wednesday.
Mirabelli told The Boston Globe that Thorne's claim was a "straight lie."
"I never said that. I know it was blood. Everybody knows it was blood," Mirabelli said.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona said he was disappointed at Thorne's claims of a hoax.
"What we're going through today as a nation, you hate to use a word like heroic on the field, but what Schill did that night on the sports field was one of the most incredible feats I ever witnessed," Francona said.
The charge that Schilling faked the bloody sock has been made before, including in GQ magazine, which cited an anonymous Red Sox player as its source.
Schilling again promised that red blood — not ink, nor paint — blotted the sock, as did Orioles first baseman Kevin Millar, a member of the 2004 Red Sox World Series team.
"I got the nine inch scar for you," Schilling said. "You can see it."
If true, this just confirms Schilling is the biggest fucking attention whore in sports.

This and the Tori Hunter story make me laugh...they show what ESPN, and sports reporting in general, has truly become...making ANYTHING into a huge story when it isn't at all.
If Miriabelli had confirmed it...then we'd be talking

thanks, ESPN. to see what that network has turned into makes me sad. It's pretty pathetic how many stories they can create and then blow up every day. The funny thing is their own reporters/experts will craft questions in interviews to which they know the responses to so they can spark some controversial/breaking news story (ie. asking Leinart is he would like to play for Pete Carrol again and then on the 6:00 sportscenter the main headline was "Corrol rumored for Cardinals job to reunite with Leinart."

i love how the media blows things out of proportion. who cares if the sock is a fake or not, is it really that big of a deal. this made front page news on yahoo when the story broke, arent there more important things going on in the world than than this. at least on sports center they kinda poked fun at the story, saying im sure scientists will be all over cooperstown to test the sock for dna

The whole story. I like gary thorne as well and have missed not hearing him call hockey games (save for the college hockey final four/national title game, that was great to hear).

they've definitely forogtten they're a sports network. they've turned into CNN/MSNBC/FOXNEWS/Entertainment Tonight with a little bit of sports thrown in.

Yeah it's a shame how they've gone from just a spectator of the sports world into the major player on the field. I understand wanting the best stories possible but going to the extent they do to create them is ridiculous and it's gotten to the point where careers and people's lives are being affected by the rumors/stories they spread.

they've confused "best stories possible" with "ones that will cause the most controversy" and that's irresponsible.

Seriously. It's all about who can find the most controversial story. They should rename the channel E!SPN.

Curt had a nice response to everyone on his blog. (38pitches.com) He bet 1M bucks to anyone who can disprove the blood (if this were to occur, Curt would donate the one mil to the bettor's charity of choice).

Gary Thorne also just admitted that he "misintrepreted" what Mirabelli "told him". Schilling came back and said he's lying about that too, that Thorne never really talked to Mirabelli at all.

I still find that hard to believe that he took that big of a joke seriously. But then again Thorne's always been a good, well-respected commentator so it's all hard to believe.

Especially when this was brought up a couple years ago and people stated then that the sock was turning colors and getting crusty. But, it's a great "conspiracy theory" so the media of course will chase it all over again despite getting the same ending.

I'm with Jim Rome on this. He said something doesn't add up. Why would Gary Thorne, who's not some bum, he's a reputable broadcaster, make that kind of leap from "we got some good PR from it" to "it was painted on"? He said he thinks Thorne "jumped on a grenade" for Mirabelli and sqaushed this whole deal but that "2+2 doesn't = 10 and this story doesn't add up either."

Obviously no one can debate that the blood wasn't real because that's been proven for a couple years now. I still find it weird that Thorne even brought this up regardless of "what he heard" seeing that it was almost 3 years ago and has been a dead issue for a while.

I'm just saying that I don't think Gary Thorne would make a leap like that without something more then what we know.
Not that I'm all that worried about it. I don't think the sock should really be in the hall of fame, either. I think it's ridiculous. And I hated hearing about it and seeing it after every pitch all postseason long that year.

I just find it weird that Thorne could misinterpret an obvious joke-based conversation about it because it's usually easy to distinguish that and a serious admission that it was staged.

well first of all, i would like to say i agree with those of you who said "if you believe this i feel sorry for you"

Gary Thorne and Bob Murphy calling the 1986 Mets/Sox series may be the most orgasmic thing the human ear has ever heard. If two people's voices were made so perfect for broadcasting a game of baseball, it was theirs. I wish Thorne would flip the bird to the Orioles and come back to the Mets radio booth.
