its starting. when i went to their cd/dvd release, i could tell immediately that kay kay was gonna blow up on the "rolling stone" crowd's radar within 6 months, and be the next sufjan stevens type shit that all the old people who are into indie music love.

Nope...they had an appearance at a local Phoenix morning show. That's about it.

wow, this is awesome news. this band sounds studio quality live, so I'm assuming this performance will get them lots of (much deserved) attention.

Someone should tell Kirk that he is not, and will never be Sufjan Stevens.
Not saying I don't like Kay Kay, just saying, this has been done before.
and here comes the flaming:

the live cd is prime, kirk is a hard working genuine dude, i think he's orchestrated some songs here that are not even close to sufjan stevens. just because he got a few friends together and added some string instruments, horns, and piano and played in the same key , newsflash sufjan stevens was not the first dude ever to do that.

dressing up to? and this is just a bit of a dramatic change from Gatsbys American Dream, and with the rise of popularity of Sufjan Stevens, there is no denying there is A LOT of influence...a little bit too much to be obsessed over this band you know? I still like Kay Kay, but there is no denying that they are really ripping of Sufjan's style
Someone should tell Kirk that he is not, and will never be Sufjan Stevens.
I hope he'll never be Sufjan Stevens, because that'd be a step down. I like Sufjan, but I find Kay Kay's music much more interesting and enjoyable. I've watched the live DVD (and listened to the CD) countless times, but I don't think I've ever made it all the way through any of Sufjan's albums in a single sitting.
Any guesses what song Kay Kay's gonna play? My money would be on "Hey Momma."

Let's hope not. Kirk can actually sing well.

and no sufjan stevens was not the first person to bring costumes and orchestra on a musical stage. its not even worth arguing to someone who has no expertise on the history of music.

excuse me? I have indeed studied the history of rock and roll so before undermining someone's knowledge, maybe you should back up your own facts.
yes people before sufjan stevens have dressed up and played shows
yes people have played with an orchestra or full band before
but YOU KNOW DAMN WELL that Sufjan Stevens has had that trademark for quite awhile now, and has brought it back into the limelight, so stop denying the fact that Kay Kay is indeed ripping off some of Sufjan's style.
there defenetly are distinct parts of Kay Kay as well, like I said I do like Kay Kay, but as a whole Kirk is drawing waaaay too much of Sufjan's style into his new project.
its just like An Angle and Bright Eyes.
or a more dramatic Muse to Radiohead.

sorry but i dont know at all actually. has kirk ever pronounced that his idea was sufjan stevens influenced? .. no you have nothing besides costumes and lots of instruments to support your saying hes ripping them off. its not legitimate at all. to me this sound isn't even relative to sufjan's sound.
an angle and bright eyes is a completely different story.

Usually, artists who know they are drawing from other peoples ideas don't admit to it, though Kirk doesn't seem like that kind of guy so I bet if you asked him he would say yes, he is influenced by Sufjan.
Watching thier live set (kay kay) and watching Sufjan perform live you can defenetly hear and see how much Kirk is drawing from Sufjan.
The sound though has a lot of influence from The Beatles though as well, and 60's/70's psychadelic rock, so combining that with the orchestra sound that Sufjan has rekindled is making it unique.

ive never seen kay kay but ive seen the dvd and sufjan and their music styles are unrelated to me. its just an easy comparison that you want to bestow on this band. beatles, and 60's/70's psychadelic rock is in almost all modern rock music. you cant prove this. its a matter of personal opinion and to me sufjan is more of a calm folk indie songwriter where as kay kay has a lot more rock influence strung in.

i think they've got a more "mainstream" sound than gatsby's, although they're not "mainstream." hopefully that makes sense. i love gatsby's, i hope all these side bands just help them experiment and then lead to another great gatsby record.

Idiot.
I saw gatsbys 2nd 4th and 5th shows as a band...not to mention more than I count since then.
excuse me for thinking kay kay is crap compared to the music GAD made over the years and not wanting them to disband for a weak flaming lips meet sufjan stevens ripoff.

Like GAD isn't a weak Sugarcult meets crap. HAH jk but on the real Kirk is better off not in Gatsby as well is Gatsby better off with out him. I am just basing my theory on the limited information I know about both bands. But I do realize that it seems that they are pursuing different genres of music. So why not part? It would be cool if they can all achieve this without changing anything up. And in response to the Sufjan Stevens comparison: who cares?! If it is good music it's good music! Everything is built upon something else. It's not like someone just shat out musical genius.
