i dont want to talk about it, all you need to know is im the most depressed i can ever remember being in my life, so people i need a suggestion on some really really really emo songs and bands. more emo than dashboard. i need something really really fucking emo!
kill yourself...
that what people tell me to do when im depressed....
I'm going to completely ignore the whole emo debate here and pretend you merely asked for really depressing songs. I don't think any band's lyrics are more cynical about love than Arab Strap and Pedro the Lion.

Yeah, but what the hell IS emo? Nobody has a clear description. The subject line meant he wanted the saddest music he could get his hands on, thats what he ment by EMOtional. This whole emo debate is retarded, the word shouldn't exist.

Emo has been so misconstrued that it can mean lots of things.

I said i didnt know what emo was. He said "Emo has been so misconstrued that it can mean lots of things." but first said that some bands WERE NOT emo. So nobody knows what it really means, which is why i said there shouldn't be an argument. The word was friggin made by the press to classify the new breed of punk with a more melodic edge. Like it or not, the face of punk has changed, and its what they call "emo" i guess. But its not really a branching path of punk, but what the media has branded our community as. Why would anyone want to spread that?
Worldwide ban on the word.......starting.....now.

I think most of us know emo from emo-core which came from emotional hardcore which came from hardcore itself. but if you ask AFittingLine for some emo bands, I'm pretty sure he'll name some. And he did make a thread about emo and had a sort of understandable explaination of emo.
AFittingLie
08/12/03, 09:11 PM
Well some idiot said that I said those bands suck.
And no, emo is clearly defined. And it wasn't created by the press either. It was created by a fan of the music back in the 80's. Emo = emotional hardcore. It's not a type of punk. It's a type of hardcore music. This is all fact.

1. If its related to hardcore, how come nearly everybody relates it to soft stuff like dashboard?

Emo is like 16 -17 years old. Everyone relates it to soft music because it's called 'emo' and a lot of people just associate emo with emotional. If everyone called it emo-core then it's more likely to be associated with hardcore.

Well, i guess im on the losing side of this one, but i still say that emo label is totally retarted.
And: why isn't "emo-core" a type of punk then? Punk is getting to be a broad range of music, and many people complan about that on this site. I mean, straylight run at the same site as good charlotte (bleh) and also as thrice? Thrice can be considered hardcore by some people, and thats covered on this site. Dont you think that punk is a lot broader than it used to be. There seems to be sublabels and all.

This might get lengthy, so bare with me.
1. People are stupid and feed from the media. That's really the best answer there is. Ask the average MTV viewer what Metal is and I bet they say "Linkin Park, System of a Down, Korn" etc., and I hope you know that that has nothing to do with metal. The mainstream likes to twist genres around and alienate what the real genre's like. Kinda like what they're doing now, passing off Good Charlotte and Simple Plan as the definiton of punk rock. For emo, it all started when Sunny Day Real Estate was starting to get big and the media started calling them emo. The band strongly denies it, because they know they don't play it. That's why a lot of bands don't feel comfortable with the word, because from actually being a part of the scene they know what it is, and they know they don't play it. And then The Get Up Kids would get the same title. And for whatever reason, Dashboard received it as well. Carrabba doesn't like the term at all. Seventeen Magazine is also to blame for that article on Emo fashion, which was a complete joke. Emo is a bad term for music as it gives off so many bad vibes. You get the "all music is emotional" argument a lot from it, even though it doesn't stand for emotional. And even though it stands for emotional hardcore, that's still bad as bands like Converge are definitely emotional. But, for the time (1984), this new form of hardcore music was definitely softer and more emotional than all the sXe stuff going on.
2. The stuff that's "popping" up now isn't even emo. Thursday emo? No, I don't think so. Just a melodic hardcore band, and yet another band that strongly denies being called emo. Lots of people will tell you emo died in 1996, but that's not true. The sound is still out there and bands are still playing it. It's always been an underground form of music and I see it staying there for a while. I can't imagine City Of Caterpillar being on a major label anytime soon. And that's another thing, screamo is just another name for emo. It was created after the whole "SDRE is emo" crap as a way for new fans of the genre to separate it from all that pop-punk/indie rock stuff. And as for emocore, well that term doesn't make sense when you write it out. Emotional Hardcore Hardcore? Kill that term.
3. I don't agree with everything posted on these sites, but they are still pretty accurate

So we basicially learned today........that allisterkid was not really asking for emo, or at least what he thought was emo. However, I DO actually like the SCREAMO term, just because it brings another use of music into play. If bands scream, they sound unique. We just shouldn't let it run rampant like it did with emo.
I still say the term sucks though....AFI was hardcore once, and theyre emotional. I cant picture calling them emo.
AFittingLie

Ehh, I use emo a lot more than screamo.
And you're too late dude. The media's already grabbed screamo by the balls and has done a repeat of what they did with tagging emo onto SDRE and The Get Up Kids. Guitar World, The New York Time, Rolling Stone, etc. all have had articles on screamo and they're putting bands like Glassjaw, Thursday, Poison The Well, Finch, Thrice, Vendetta Red, etc. into it.
We're trying to get emo to turn into the term "kittencore". That way, people won't be interested in it.
