Aereogramme, A Northern Chorus, Saxon Shore

April 29th, 2007
Luna Lounge
Brooklyn, NY

This was the first time I’ve ever been to the Luna Lounge, and I was quite surprised. The venue was clean and well kept, the area was decent, and the sound was impressive. All in all it was a great venue; I’ll definitely frequent it more often.

Saxon Shore (http://www.myspace.com/saxonshore) was the first band to grace the stage, and I must say, I’ve never been as impressed with an opening band as I was by them. Self described as “instrumental music for people who don’t like instrumental music,” I think they pretty much hit the nail on the head. I’m a sucker for a cheesy line, and my attention did not leave the stage from the beginning to the very end of their performance. Each song was more of an adventure than a piece of music and the precision in which they played is hard to rival. The trio of guitars played off of each other as the drama built, adding to the ambient sound. I highly recommend this band for fans of Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, or anyone who appreciates good music.

A Northern Chorus (http://www.myspace.com/anorthernchorus) were next, and though I had only heard bits and pieces of their music previously, I was highly anticipating their performance. As I was expecting, it did not disappoint. The duo of male vocalists complimented a serenely voiced female, whose efforts were among my favorite of the bunch. Being a string player myself, I was drawn to the moan of the cello in unison with, and other times in contrast to the sharp spikes of the violinist’s energy. The orchestral harmonies added life to the already swirling and pulsing sound. If you get the chance, you should definitely check this band out.

Aereogramme (http://www.myspace.com/aereogrammeofficial) finished out the show with a performance that was incomparable. Lead singer Craig B’s angelic vocals captivated the crowd during the entire set without for a second dropping even a fraction off-key. The band’s representation of the album was flawless, which included the keyboardist emulating all of the orchestral parts. It was more of a religious experience. There aren’t many bands that captivate a crowd so much, that during a break in an acoustic song, it is so quiet you can hear a pin drop. Our eyes were glued to the stage, anticipating each and every note. How this band does not have a Radiohead-esque following, I’m not sure, as I can see them appeal to almost anyone; and own the stage at an arena of any size. Moral of the story: go check out Aereogramme; as they have released one of my favorite albums this year, and produce a stellar live show that is clearly in a category of its own.

I missed this coming through Boston on Friday, and now I am even more upset.

Great review.
