Why is there a sudden interest in this topic? Its rare, and rarely sounds different at all:
1905, Hiretsukan, CTTS, Witch Hunt sound different during there actual screams, but thats frequently just due to you hearing them set beside a male one. I didn't even know flowers in the attic was female til just now. Anomie, IWSMOFY, frequently fall into this category for me.

The only screamo vocalist i'd be more interested hearing as a female than male would be the jerome's dream/deadseraphim style. Because, think of just how much higher they could get? I've also yet to hear one, everyone has heard them doing standard styles or whiny singing (CTTS, i'm looking at you), but no hear peeling vocals?

Personally, its probably more to do with repression. According to our societal view, males are supposed to be practically emotionless beings, with women crying over seeing a bird lose a feather. They don't have to repress their emotions, we do. So we have a lot more to release in a performing format, whereupon it becomes OK (in fact, that was the whole point) to act out every emotion we've ever felt.

no, it's the fact that the hardcore scene is sexist and women are made to feel like they can't be a part of it other than being some random boy's coat hanger. yeah, there's obvious exceptions, but it's probably a lot harder for a woman to break into the scene and get respect, especially if they're not "hot", than it would be for an ugly guy.

Every rock scene in general is sexist... very few bands have ever openly stood for feminism that weren't all female (Fugazi is probably one of the only all male bands to do so, and its one of the reasons they rock). And hot women get less respect for being intelligent, most of them act stupider than they are (at least the ones around here), which is hard to do for some, but they pull it off. In general, the hotter a girl is the dumber she is as well, or at least she acts that way. Any chick doing stuff in the hardcore scene gets respect from me, their hotness isn't really a factor for me.

Besides, they are clearly getting respect or we wouldn't have this many threads on it.

Every rock scene in general is sexist...

sure. but the hardcore scene is hyper masculine. at the point where people are complaining about boys wearing girl's jeans, you can see how anything that isn't masculine is generally frowned upon. at least other forms of rock and roll have ways of subverting gender roles, such the stuff david bowie was doing in the 70s.

very few bands have ever openly stood for feminism that weren't all female (Fugazi is probably one of the only all male bands to do so, and its one of the reasons they rock)

because people have made feminism a bad word even though they're too stupid to realize that it helps people of all genders. i don't see what's bad with equality. i'm also really feminine, so whatever.

And hot women get less respect for being intelligent, most of them act stupider than they are (at least the ones around here), which is hard to do for some, but they pull it off.

hot women generally "act stupid" for acceptance. people are threatened by intelligent/strong women. if a pretty girl bests me in an argument, i'd easily be able to claim "oh well i couldn't concentrate because of how she was dressed. she used being hot against me", and that'd be a legit argument. we would accuse them of using their beauty against us, though men often do use their attractiveness against women a lot, but it just goes ignored by society.

In general, the hotter a girl is the dumber she is as well, or at least she acts that way.

that's just a stereotype. the hottest girl i've ever met is also the smartest one i've ever met. i don't know, maybe i'm lucky and just got to talk about anarchism and radical philosophy with some pretty girls...

Any chick doing stuff in the hardcore scene gets respect from me, their hotness isn't really a factor for me.

that's a progressive thought (if you didn't say chick), but it's the minority, or at least i think.

Besides, they are clearly getting respect or we wouldn't have this many threads on it.

I don't believe so, think of how many people say "girl bands suck" in these threads. You'd never hear someone saying that about bands of males, because that's a stupid generalization. It's the same with female bands. Even then, the reason a lot of female bands suck is because people believe they're emulating males, yet, they have to act like males or else they wouldn't get respect. it's a double standard.

that's why i think bands like CTTS or I Would Set Myself on Fire for you are so cool. they subvert the traditional male dominance of hardcore. I mean, CTTS is dropping lines like "A woman's work is never done" and I Would Etc has very clean female singing.

Nevuk
05/04/07, 07:09 AM
I'm well aware hot women aren't stupid, and agree that some of the hotter ones I've met have been extremely smart. But they are more likely to act stupid.

Everything else you've said I agree with. I'm also more feminist inclined than your average person(Ok, average as well), but the emo scene has always been extremely liberal in most respects hasn't it? Aside from that one misogynist aspect that people complain about... Wait, I actually see what you are talking about, didn't some feminist magazine say that emo was extremely sexist for placing the blame of failed relationships on the female side of it, pretty much exclusively? (They were talking about MCR-esque emo, but it can apply to RoS at the least)

I really only care about if the music they make is something I enjoy listening to. Some female screamo bands I love, some I can't stand. I love CTTS, but find I would rather boring.

(On a side note, I always thought chick was gotten from chica, so I've never really found it sexist)

Meghan (bassist of Ampere) does vox.

Also, I promote feminism, but still seems odd for guys to wear girl jeans. They're tailored to the female body, and they almost ALWAYS look awkward on a guy. There are male jeans out there designed with that sort of fit in mind (I've had in-depth conversations with a few 'fashionable' males about them).

Nevuk
05/04/07, 07:37 AM
I can't wear girl jeans as a girl my height is considered a giant, even though I really am that thin.
Isn't this just a bit... off subject however? I seriously doubt most people wearing girl jeans are trying to support feminism.

haha I'm pretty sure none of them are, but feminism supports that sort of idea (ie: the breaking down of gender boundaries, etc etc.) I just think that, as much as we'd all like to have nothing separating gender, that the general biological differences in body shapes should be accepted. There are men's designers out there working really hard to offer that "tight and flared out slightly" fit that scene guys seem to be so adamant about having by wearing girl jeans (and thus making their asses protrude out about 5 feet more than usual.)

edit: and if you're a transsexual/uncertain/etc, then I guess you have your pick of the denim litter.

no, you just spouting off bullshit inequality. its not about generalizing a whole half of the population, its about some people, gender aside, being better then other people at it. Theres tons of women who rule at screaming, theres tons that suck. Theres tons of men who rule at screaming, theres also tons that suck. I can think of more males that are horrible at it then females, and thats only because of closeminded people like you fucking overgeneralizing and putting down a gender of people and making them feel automatically inequal before giving them a chance. i just remembered a bunch:

I Spoke
In Loving Memory
Palatka had both
Anomie
If you're talking about End of Irony, that was actually a guest vocalist from Moonraker. Who is another good one. At least I thought that was the band... it was some other screamo band whom I can't remember at all right now.

no, it's the fact that the hardcore scene is sexist and women are made to feel like they can't be a part of it other than being some random boy's coat hanger. yeah, there's obvious exceptions, but it's probably a lot harder for a woman to break into the scene and get respect, especially if they're not "hot", than it would be for an ugly guy.

I do agree with you to a certain extent. I do believe that I am more than qualified to voice my opinion on this subject, seeing as I myself am a female who is very deep into the hardcore scene in my city. I play guitar for a hardcore band and it is very frustrating when we play shows and i have to watch all of these girls standing in the corner, just a part of the scenery, too scared or intimidated to really be apart of the experience of the show. There is no reason why a girl can't get right up front with the guys and go insane. I have started many "girl pits" in my day, and I just wanna say that it is one of the greatest things I have ever witnessed--girls moshing and hardcore dancing--and guys actually appreciating and respecting them for it. Although it may be a little tougher at first for a female to gain the same respect as a guy in the hardcore scene, once you get it, it is very uplifting because you know it is well earned and deserved. In some ways, I think I get more respect just for being a female guitar player than a guy would, just for being a girl. Alot of times after shows I am bombarded by praise by both guys and girls, not because I'm an incredible guitarist [although I am pretty damn good ]...but because I'm a GIRL. So, it goes both ways. When you first tell people you are a guitarist and you'd like to start a band, people think you're a joke. But once you show them what you can do and actually gain the respect of the guys, the gender difference hardly matters.

Edit: Aside from Bad Brains

So, because I'm in a hardcore band I am expected to listen exclusively to hardcore music? Funny.
If you're talking about the founding hardcore bands of the 80's, then I agree, the only band that falls under that category would be Bad Brains. But, modern hardcore is nothing like what it has evolved from. Most of today's so called "hardcore" bands such as vanna, on broken wings, the jonah veil, death before dishonor, arms in hand, arizona is dying slowly, and damnation A.D. would not be considered hardcore when placed beside a band like bad brains. Most of them are a fusion of hardcore/metalcore and grindcore, creating a completely different sound than the brains. Whatever you want to label it, I believe it is amazing music and I enjoy playing and listening to it, but it is definetely not the only type of music I listen to, as you can see by the list so graciously provided by SubrosaSeductiv.

I guess I can understand where you are coming from, with all these annoying little teeny boppers that think they are so fucking "scene" just because they own a panic! at the disco t-shirt and a fucking underoath album. But, just a little bit of advice, it's best not to judge people and make assumptions based on nothing. Get to know someone, then commence necessary bashing. Assumptions are socially wrong, but innately the best thing that's ever happened to mankind. So, I'm sorry if I offended you, but this is a natural defense mechanism to keep me away from harm or disappointments.

Anyhow, the first page did have any music up, but I'm sure you guys had fun. The second one isn't really my thing, but it's good for what it is. Keep doin' yo thang.

Well, yea, basicly he is just a shitty guitar player. Also, the band members are getting sick of him. Apparently he's started criticizing and telling the drummer what to do even though he isn't even a drummer, and he refuses to take any advice on his guitar playing from the lead guitarist who is leagues ahead of him. Point blank, he's being a dick.

First off, I'm not a he. Don't butt into a conversation if you don't have the slightest clue what its about. Yea, I used to play Green Day...when I was fucking 12. I'm pissed powertabs got shut down, I'm stuck with the tabs I've got already saved onto my comp. Some of the stuff I've been doing lately is It Dies Today [cool to fuck around with, they have fairly easy rhythms, nothing too tricky], Opeth [the only song of theirs that I've gotten all the way through is Masters Apprentices b/c most of their stuff clocks in @ around 8-10 minutes per song and I just don't have the patience for that], Killswitch Engage[Rose of Sharyn, good for stamina b/c its straight downpicking for like 4 minutes], and All That Remains-Passion. When I'm not working on that stuff I try to write material with my boyfriend, who also plays guitar. Yea, we're like those dorks from Juno.
I really don't understand how you could judge my guitar playing when you've never even heard me before. Willful and blatant ignorance at its best.

It's cool song, but only a female scream at 01.45min...

It's the wife of M. Shadows now they say ^^

Dunno if its screamo, but i KNOW its best female scream ive ever heard! (to my opinion at least)

Oh my god. People do not understand that music with screaming does not mean it is screamo. But since the OP didn't understand that either I recommend two non-screamo bands, Rolo Tomassi and iwrestledabearonce.

Flyleaf wasn't so bad when they were a local band in Texas. No, I'm not saying they're "screamo," but since the OP mentioned them, I thought I'd say something.

Also, I'm surprised it took 11 pages for someone to bring up Bieber.

As for actual thread contribution, I put forward Otep. Not screamo, but close to the OP's "examples."

I'm sure someone's said it already, but I'm not sifting through 11 pages to find out. 3 pages was enough. Eyes Set to Kill, I suppose. Though I outgrew them faster than I thought I would.

I've always found it strange that there is a shit ton more female death metal vocalists than female screamo/hardcore/post-hardcore vocalits, seeing as the former is far more masculine than the latter. I guess the metal scene is just more accepting and open-minded in that regard than the screamo/hardcore/post-hardcore scene. Dunno.
