2011. It's crazy to think that the year is half-way over. One thing that makes it believable is the almost vulgar amount of good music that's already been released. From hip-hop to pop punk and everything in-between, there's something for everyone, no matter what your natural bias is. We, the infallible Absolute Punk staff, have sat down to come up with our personal top 10 of the year so far. We've agonized, losing countless hours of sleep to make sure we put together the best lists possible. So scroll down and check out what we think constitutes the best of these first six months, offer your own thoughts in the comments below, or just lurk and seethe. You may find some hidden gems, or reaffirm your decision to finally pick up something that interested you. Here's to the next six months!

If I had been listening to SBTRKT for a bit longer, they'd probably be on my list. Ahh, so many good albums have come out this year.
Hope you guys can find something new that you like on these lists!

How did August Burns Red not make anyone's list? Severe lack of heavier music here.

Barely, we had a lot of debate on it .. I dunno if it passes or not. Same with Astronautalis, seeing as it's far away. I hadn't heard The Horrible Crowes when I put this together, or I would have had to shift my top 3 around a bunch.

Still need to hear Touche Amore and Firework's new albums. I agree with knux, Childish Gambino was a great pick, Drew! "When these mothafuckas gonna understand I'm serious? I'm hard in the paint, like I fucked her on her period!"

I love looking at Broden and Eda's lists next to each other. Haha.
Also, there are so many albums I thought were truly awful on Joe's list. Guess every band needs fans though.

Agree with a lot of the records mentioned here. My favorites at this point: Mansions, The Antlers, I Can Make A Mess, Touche Amore, Thursday. The Antlers album will likely be one gem many find out about after the fact, it's wonderful.

My generic response to this - the lists are personal. "Best" album lists would look different. Anyone can analyze talent and musicianship. If we did that most of the lists would look the same. These are our personal top 10s. Laugh however much you want to laugh.

Thomas, your list is my favorite, as expected.
Also really excited to see Vices and Lets Be Animals made some top 10 lists.

Hey man, even if you like dumb pop music, The Wonder Years isn't even catchy, aggressive or fun. I'll vouch for Simple Plan but Owl City and All Time Low albums don't stick which is bad news if you're a fan of pop.

My generic response to this - the lists are personal. "Best" album lists would look different. Anyone can analyze talent and musicianship. If we did that most of the lists would look the same. These are our personal top 10s. Laugh however much you want to laugh.
I just can't figure out The Wonder Years. It's not hooky enough to be a guilty pleasure. The nasal vocals don't allow for it to really...rock and the subjects they touch on are the basic generic and earnest from-the-suburbs things. I can't figure it out. I mean, I don't really like A Day To Remember but I, sort of, get why kids are so into them. TWY, on the other hand, I'm still dumbfounded.

Hahaha excellent response. I couldn't wait to get to yours so that I could find some genuinely good pop rock. I've only heard Simple Plan's single but I thought it was catchy as fuck -- the record is that good?

YC definely needs more love from you people.
anyway this is a great year for music. we finally have a good best seller in Adele, and pop punk is making a comeback of sorts. lots of highly anticipated records to come on the second semester
i didn't listen to enough 2011 music to make a top 10, or even a top 5, but i would pick YC, Manchester Orchestra and TWY as the best of the year so far. my favorites are YC, Silverstein and ATL.
Bon Iver, Thursday, Fireworks, Panic! and The Swellers are up next. i still need to digest Suburbia a little more, though.
props to Thomas and Joe for their great lists. haters gonna hate, but don't let it get to you :-)

Fair enough, it's just that I honestly find 21 flawless. I wouldn't change a single second of it and it's going to be hard for anything to beat it for me this year. But to each their own I guess, there's been some fantastic music out so far this year!
I checked through all the lists and noticed some stuff I've really been wanting to check out but haven't yet (Yuck, Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi, Other Lives, Mansions, Maritime). Hopefully I'll discover some great new albums by checking some of these recommendations out.

Jason's list is the only one that has albums after June 28 release date. I would have had Dangerous Summer, Horrible Crowes and Bomb The Music Industry on mine. I had 15 at one point too haha.

you guys realize that there is NO POSSIBLE WAY there isn't going to be a TDS backlash on AP after how much it's been hyped by you guys (and anamericangod), regardless of how good it is. I mean, I can't wait to listen to the record so I can start talking about how over rated the band is , and I LOVED RFTS and the dudez in the band even though they come off as super douche's.

I still need to listen to Fucked Up...
I won't lie, I've probably only listened to about 10% of those albums in their entirety, but some of my favourites of the year so far are:
Young the Giant- Young the Giant
The Civil Wars- Barton Hollow
Yellowcard- When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes
The Swellers- Good for Me
Taking Back Sunday- Taking Back Sunday
Greg Holden- I Don't Believe You
Simple Plan- Get Your Heart On
...and The Dangerous Summer- War Paint (I've only had the opportunity to listen to it twice over but I'm pretty much counting down the days to listen to it again on release day)

2. Bon Iver (www.absolutepunk.net/boniver/) - Bon Iver
3. Glassjaw (www.absolutepunk.net/glassjaw/) - Our Color Green EP/Coloring Book EP

9. Eisley (www.absolutepunk.net/eisley/) - The Valley
10. Destry (www.absolutepunk.net/destry/) - Waiting On A Island
About my top 10 so far:
Of course Taking Back Sunday get the 1st spot. This is my most anticipated record of all fuckin' time and for the first time since TAYF I fall in love with the new songs almost instantly. Faith was the only song that it took me some time to get used to, and when I listened to the record actually started clicking with me. I feel this is this best record at least since TAYF, so that's actually something to acknowledge for. Also, Taking Back Sunday is my favorite band, it's not even fair with the rest of the list.
And well, than there's Bon Iver. Brilliant. AOTY. It's not even fair with the rest of the list. Except I'm not making this my #1, haha.
What I'm looking forward the most for the rest of the year: La Dispute and The Dangerous Summer new records.

Thank God for Jason Tate, Drew Beringer, and Greg Robson for their first picks. I wholeheartedly agree. Surprised to see so much Manchester on here as well. I thought it was pretty average.
Here's mine:
1. Bon Iver - Bon Iver

4. 1,2,3 - New Heaven
5. Mansions - Dig Up The Dead
6. Foo Fighters - Wasting Light

Sure to find Jack's Mannequin, Paper Route, Coldplay, and Thrice on here by the end of the year
Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of the albums on these lists....but don't you think maybe you should call this site absoluteindie instead? ha Just saying because there is nothing punk about 90% of these albums. Side note: I'm not into hip hop that much anymore but Childish Gambino is crazy good.

Wow, it's an awesome feeling to find you have common musical taste with anybody, much less a staff member! :)
For the record, I debated putting the Caroline album on there for a while too. I've really enjoyed all of the recommendations you've put up so far this year, so thank you.
ps. Do you happen to be a 65daysofstatic fan? :hopeful:
Haha yeah, I like them. I also like Maybshewill, Foster The People and Gang Gang Dance. I can see why you'd probably enjoy the bands I cover/feature.
Thank you for paying attention!

Kudos to Debroah for including Elway's album Delusions. I felt like that was a really great album that seemed to go largely unnoticed despite the fact that THEY WERE ON ESPN. I was really glad to see that made someone's top 10.
Glad to see another Elway fan! But in a lot of ways, I'm not surprised they overlooked it anyway. People just don't seem to latch onto the type of music a band like Elway plays, even if it is good. I don't follow football and I didn't even know who John Elway was, haha. I just listened to them because they're on Red Scare Industries and that label has ridiculously good taste for the most part.

People get tired of metalcore, just like they get tired of everything else. August Burns Red is a talented group of guys for sure, but you can only go so far with metalcore before you turn into BTBAM, and if you do, then you're a rip-off.

People putting The Wonder Years above Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, MMJ, Manchester Orchestra, Thursday, Moving Mountains, etc. make me laugh.
Also, Joe DeAndrea, seriously dude?
Why does it make you laugh? Or are you another one of those stereotypical indie fan-boys that think pop-punk isn't credible music just because it's pop-punk? I mean I can see if you think that those other albums are better, but deeming someone feeling differently about that laughable is just ignorance.

That is how I got into them originally as well. Red Scare has some great bands. I was shocked to hear about them being on ESPN a few weeks after the album was released. I figured that exposure might help them out a little bit more than it seems it did. I would say that you're statement about people not latching onto that type of band is pretty accurate though.

I think a lot of pop-punk sounds the same, which is why you won't find it on my list. You see a lot of Fireworks and The Wonder Years on this list, and (arguably), these bands progress from record to record. In my opinion, the rest of genre has ruined it for ABR. Not the band itself.
Why does it make you laugh? Or are you another one of those stereotypical indie fan-boys that think pop-punk isn't credible music just because it's pop-punk? Pop-punk stopped becoming credible to me for the most part when they started using "honest" as a buzz-word and made every effort possible to bring the genre back to the state it was around the year 2004. Move on, for heaven's sake.

The Discovery by Born of osiris is the only "heavy" release ive liked this year and its fucking phenomenal. Also, the lists need Eisley, The Dear Hunter and Explosions In The Sky. To add, suburbia is way overrated imo. I liked the upsides more.
1) Fireworks - Gospel
2) Taking Back Sunday - S/T
3) The Wonder Years - Suburbia I've Given You All And Now I'm Nothing
4) Balance & Composure - Separation
5) Manchester Orchestra - Simple Math
6) Cold War Kids - Mine Is Yours
7) Bon Iver - Bon Iver
8) The Story So Far - Under Soil And Dirt
9) The Dear Hunter - The Color Spectrum
10) Yellowcard - When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes
I suspect that Polar Bear Club and Jack's Mannequin will find homes somewhere on this list when they are released.

I think each staff member brings something different to the website in terms of genres. It no longer predominantly features and covers pop/punk music, but rather it's diverse and I'd like to think we do an admirable job at showcasing as many bands, artists and genres as we possibly can!
Actually now that I think of it, I haven't heard a pop/punk release all year. I'll have to change that.

There's probably something great that I'm forgetting. If only these lists were a little less similar.
I haven't been impressed by much this year. Touché Amoré, TBS, and Manchester Orchestra would be near the top.
