I think it's funny that "emo" is either "angry, hardcore music" or "sad, depressed, slow music". When in reality, it's somewhere in the middle. No mainstream media outlet is ever going to get it right, though.

"Emo" began as "emotional hardcore" in the Washington, DC (and other, primarily east coast areas) area to describe the style of music that punk and hardcore musicians started playing. Punk/hardcore was originally about government, freedom, civil rights, etc. When these bands stopped singing about these issues, and began singing about more personal, emotional topics, the term was coined.

That's what "emo" stood for when it was created. Now, it is applied to any band that has pop sensibilities, drop-d tuning, and screaming.

but really, musical genres have become so broad nowadays, its hard to really classify most artists or types of music, as they all have so many elements of so many different genres. it really annoys me when people try to generalize things like this "news" segment did. music is music- its art, its beautiful. leave it at that
