Is Alternative Press Right on Alesana?

Alesana's "On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax" got half a star in the newest edition of Alternative Press. They said that it was a combination of "everything wrong with music today." I was just wondering if anybody else agrees with me that the review is pretty much bullshit.

Don't get me wrong, I hate this band with a fiery passion--but I would reserve a 1/2 star for a band who were absolutely untalented. While I would never buy their cd or support this band, I think they deserved at least 1.5 to 2 stars. The production quality is decent, the songs are oookay (I'm being generous) and their sound is tight.

This type of music is overdone (There's some bands that do it that are somewhat enjoyable) and there's a thousand bands doing with Alesana do, only better. They're probably one of the worst bands around.

AP gave Alesana an unfair rating...the cd itself is an easy 3.5-4...the music is great and once you get a chance to see them live, you have a whole new apprectiation for it...AP needs to get their shit straight

I agree. Everyone has their own taste in music. What magazine can say what is or isnt someone's liking of music. All this is bullshit. The media is telling people who they should listen to and the rest is shit. Well I think some of Alt Press is shit.

...Alesana's lyrics are hardly childish...childish is not an underlying analogical connection to ancient greek mythology and roman history...the cd, while undoubtedly incorporating personal feelings, allures to Ambrosia, the story of Icarus, the Roman ruler Nero, the Greek goddess of chaos Eris, and the story of the fall of Troy...with this in mind not one bit of the lyrics are senseless...each and every word holds meaning...look at the lyrics of Icarus, Ambrosia, The Third Temptation of Paris, A Siren's Soliloquy, Neros Decay, and even Alchemy Sounded Good at the Time...they all tell the stories of these different characters...if you are at all familiar with these tales and characters then you will see the connections...so before you say a band's lyrics are childish and senseless again I would advise you to do a little research...as far as the voices of Shawn and Dennis, they both have a strong talent...Shawn's high pitch singing and screams provide a good parallel for Dennis' deeper, scratchier screaming...and as for the tragedy about the music scene, Alesana should not be your worry...they stick strong and true to the elements that define the post-hardcore and screamo genres...

No, it's just not something I got into, and I'm saying they shouldn't have gotten half a star at least 1.5 - 2. I agreed with the other guy saying that a half star rating should be reserved for talentless bands such as Cute Is What We Aim For. I think maybe in a few years Alesana will be better, but right now it's too early to tell and the lyrics are seriously lacking.

I understand, it's just all been done before... There is no difference between "On Frail Wings Of Vanity And Wax" and "The Satellite Years" by Hopesfall, as well as many other bands that fall into the whole screamo/emo genre... It's just starting to get old and many bands that used to be in this genre are trying to pull away, even Silverstein is trying to stay away from the full screamogenre, and The Reason completely turned their career around and directing it away from screamo since it's slowly dying. I'm afraid that Alesana is just a few years too late, and the screamo fad is almost all but over.

i feel it's just kinda generic thats all. im not gonna knock anybody for liking it necessarily, and it's not the worst thing i've ever heard, and i also don't feel it's everything wrong with music, but they do have some of those qualities. i just think there are other bands out there who do the same thing as them but much better. like i said, a half star i thought was a little rough, but i wouldn't give many stars above it either.

Ok, you silly bitch. Don't fucking take this personal. I was talking about a band, not you. Before you start intellectually ejaculating all over everything I said, let me just point out that I am a little more than just familiar with these stories...I've studied them more than once in my academic career. And I don't care what the subject of a song is, the lyrics can still suck ass. I'll give them this, this effort was a severe improvement from their first stuff, which completely sucked. However, even though some of the lyrics describe tales of Greek and Roman mythology, they fail to do more than scratch the surface of the story and do not dig in depth or anything. Besides, lyrics like the ones for, "Congratulations, I Hate You" and "Apology" are undeniably abysmal. I think that's what AP was referring to. They are extremely corny and whiny. Alesana essentially embraces every stereotype out there for newer screamo bands. Whiny vocals, corny lyrics, etc.
And as far as the Goddamn vocals go, no...I don't think that their vocalists are worth a shit. What's the point in screaming if no one can understand what the fuck you're saying? And singing? I was done with the high-pitched, whiny shit when I was done with New Found Glory in the 10th grade.
I'm sorry I upset you and your love for your home-state band, but please...let's try and be a litte more mature about this. I've listened to some of these songs. I've read the lyrics before. Just because we don't agree, doesn't mean you should question my intelligence, OK?

I don't like this band, and I respect AP magazine A LOT, but here's something everyone has to understand, each review is the opinions of ONE guy not ALL of them, sorta like AP.net, more people may agree, but only ONE person wrote that review so don't get your panties in a bunfdle bitching about ALL of Ap mag when it's ONE GUY who hated the album, even though the whole staff should've/ probably did, hate the album, lol
