Kids in the Way – Apparitions of Melody
Label: Flicker Records
Release Date: May 10, 2005
Who?
Kids in the Way is a Christian hard rock band with post-hardcore (i.e. screaming) influences. Hello? Did everyone hit the “close” button at once? Forget all that Jesus force-feeding, the biblical references are obscure undertones at best. Don’t expect any “For God so loved the world…” either, these aren’t happy tunes.
How Is It?
Apparitions of Melody is way too refined. The strongest moments are when vocalist Dave Pelsue unleashes his voice from it’s deep, angsty bass and switches to high-pitched screams. One step forward, two steps back is pretty much the theme here. Take “Blind Behind The Wheel” for example. The strongest, most crazed yells can be heard here, but the lackluster, melodic vocals and redundant guitar riff almost make the song worthless. A harder and faster sound throughout would fit Pelsue much better than power ballads like “Apparitions of Melody” or the minimal snoozefest “This Could Be The Song That Will Change Your Heart.” More like the song that will make me change the CD (lol?). Yes, that was lame, but this is worse.
Recommended If You Like: Pillar, Funeral For A Friend, The Book of Job, Tooth and/or Nail, Three Days Grace
