Apparently, New Order (http://www.neworderonline.com/) has broken up (http://www.spin.com/features/news/2007/05/070504_neworder/)

they have had quite a run... wasn't as much of a fan of their latest efforts... but nonetheless, they were a great group.

Yeah, they certainly lived a long run. It's not such a bad thing when a band thats been going for over 20 years (?) split up.

I agree. Stop having an opinion on music that just so happens to favor one band over the other. Especially when the band you like is a band a lot of people like. Jeeze. What the hell is this world coming to, that someone can like a band that other people like over another band who isn't as trendy.

Dude, I don't care how high horsed and sarcastic you want to be about "opinion", but New Order has done so much more musically than the tuneless post-punk of Joy Division. People only rave about Joy Division because they're a tagged band thanks to newer bands like Thursday and Fall Out Boy, and are protected with obligation by heaps of people who just want to look like they're "musically sophisticated". Newsflash: 97% of the people who "love Joy Divison" don't ACTUALLY like Joy Division.
On this website, I'm more than willing to take the risk I'm offending one of those 3%.

I've never really listened to either band. So, I don't even have a side to take between the two. I just thought your comment was interesting, in that, it shows that people will refuse to like certain bands only because they are "trendy". There are quite a few of those people here, you being one of them.
Go listen to your music, and I'll go listen to mine, and you can hate everything that I like, and I'll hate everything that you like, but lets not waste anymore time trying to cut down other people for having separate opinions.

If you're insiniuating that I don't actually listen to those bands, that list is directly copied from my iTunes. And I listen to EVERYTHING on my iTunes, no exceptions.
If you actually do like Joy Division, I apologize; but I think with the quality of music listeners on this website, you really couldn't blame me for thinking otherwise.

Look at my music list, dolt. If you're calling me some kind of elitist, you should really rethink it. I have not dissected anyone's opinion; I don't listen to either Joy Divison or New Order. But I certaintly know that New Order is a much better band, simply like how I know that Queen is better than Chumbawumba. Joy Division is nothing more than a tradename to make yourself look hipper than you actually are. Me? I'm not hip, and I don't really care about what you think of me. But show some respect to New Order for being highly influential and abled, breaking up after a long and prosperous run, and not holding them to some two record suicide singer namesake one-hit wonder once-band.

Actually, I looked through your music list before I even typed a thing in response to what you said. But thanks for the tip. I think it's ironic that you listen to a lot of trendy music, then told someone to "grow a pair" for listening to trendy music.
And to be quite honest, I respect all musical artists, cause it takes balls to go out there and do what they do, and then take all the criticism and bashing, and then just keep going. So I respect "some two record suicide singer namesake one-hit wonder once-band" just as much as a band that has been "highly influential and abled, breaking up after a long and prosperous run".
By the way, I don't think abled is a word. I could be wrong though.

You don't understand what I'm saying. I may personally not like Joy Division, but I'm not calling them trendy - that would be rather stupid, all things considered, wouldn't it? All I'm saying is that it has become VERY trendy to say you like certain bands that are frequently mentioned by today's big bands - aforementioned Thursday and FOB - when the problem is, you don't actually listen to them. My problem was never with Joy Division than with the incredible amount of people who say they love Joy Division but don't know anything but Fall Out Boy's cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart"
You seem to think my problem is with people listening to "trendy music", and that's where you have been misled. There's no irony - I have no problem with trendy music, or people listening to it. Hell, I enjoy some of it myself. My problem is with people SAYING they listen to trendy music - in an attempt to be more hip - without actually ever listening to it.
I bolded the second part just to say that it doesn't apply to Joy Divison, as Ian Curtis wouldn't be accurately described as someone to "keep going".

As I said about abled, as a word, I could've been wrong. And I was. My spell check in Firefox doesn't recognize it as a word. So I just went off that.
However, that aside, I still see a flaw in what you are saying, because you don't know if he really listens to Joy Division or not, so the fact that you would say what you did, was only based on your idea that he only says he listens to them because they are labeled "trendy music".
I'm glad you clarified what you meant, though, and I understand what you're saying now. It wasn't clear to me. All in all, this was pointless to argue about. Haha, I think I just needed something to do last night. Either way.

Anyway, this shouldn't really come as a surprise to anyone who is actually a fan of the band. This just proves what everyone already knew. Stop bitching about Joy Division and go put on some New Order albums, you'll feel better.

It must suck having your condition. I didn't even know it existed. If I couldn't eat and listen to music at the same time, that would be awful.

Whoa, eat and listen to music? Same time? No. The range of emotions and sensations would be far too spectacular and amazing. I must try this sometime.

Jeez, Mortal Soldier, you're kinda a dick. So the guy likes a band more than the other one. Shit, I like The Bouncing Souls more than I like The Beatles, despite the fact that The Beatles are a much more influential band. Does that make me a bad person? Should I not be allowed to listen to music because of that?
Just because a band is highly influential doesn't mean I have to like them. I'm sure there are less influential bands that you like more than, say, the Eurythmics, but I wouldn't say that makes you stupid about your taste in music.

man this got out of control. joy division and new order influenced a lot of bands that most of the people on here listen to, whether or not you want to actually listen to joy division or new order is really your own thing. i personally don't like either of them (i have both joy division albums and a couple albums from new order) except for the joy division song 'dead souls' which, i'll be honest, the only reason i know about that song is because nine inch nails did a cover of it for the crow soundtrack (i think the nin version is better). new order's older stuff doesn't really stand the test of time for me, i think it sounds too dated, joy division obviously sounds dated because dude killed himself in 1980. but, when you think about it, they were a direct influence on the new wave scene and, having done all of that in the 70s, you've gotta admit they were pretty far ahead of their time. i'll agree with the one dude in saying that a lot of kids claim to like both bands just because they're 'supposed to' like them, but if you like them, then you like them. just don't 'like' them because one of your favorite emo bands does.

This is a completely different argument, dude. I have no problem with someone liking modern bands more than influential ones. Hell, I mainly listen to modern music. What makes you this "bad person" is barging in on a resolved semi-argument, putting words in my mouth as an attack against you in a competely unrelated matter. Really, get some reading and comprehension skills and get back to me on this, because you have no idea what we're talking about.
I may come off as a dick at times, but at least I'm not an idiot (which you have gone so far out of your way to prove to everyone).

I still thinking saying Joy Division > New Order on a break-up thread for them is disrespectful. As much as Ian Curtis was missed, I don't think New Order (with their extensive, extensive catalog) want to be compared to their early set-up as a band led by some guy who killed himself. Joy Division was an early stint that didn't last long, and New Order's been releasing and touring (while not consistently) for over 25 years now.
It's like saying The Hype > U2, except Fall Out Boy didn't cover The Hype.
