Favez (http://www.myspace.com/favez) - When I reviewed Chris Wicky's side project (The Sad Riders) a couple years ago for another site, I called it a masterpiece and highly relatable to common man's struggle to accomplish the American dream. Chris then proceeded to send me a seven paragraph email telling me how much of an idiot I was for Americanizing everything and that indeed the concepts he was singing about were native to his home country of Switzerland as well. "Thanks" was never a part of the email. Oddly enough, it made me respect him even more.
Jena Berlin (http://www.myspace.com/jenaberlin) - Quo Vadimus will be one of the year's most critically praised releases. For all those still mourning the loss of Bear Vs. Shark, this band is your second coming.
Poverty Branch (http://www.myspace.com/povertybranch) - I'm a sucker for a plucky folk jaunt and "The Ballad of Lacy May" is one of those songs that doesn't leave the head easily.
Lock and Key (http://www.myspace.com/lockandkey) - After releasing an EP and a full length on Deep Elm, the Boston band is currently in search of a new label. Regardless of where they end up, their latest stuff is a throaty good time and almost makes me forget how much I hate the Red Sox.
Shameless self-promotion:
Sons of Nero (http://www.myspace.com/louevilsonsofnero) - When someone asks you to listen to their band's garage-recorded demos, you should likely run for the auditory hills. That being said, check out my band's garage-recorded demos!
