Note: All of these opinions have been slightly exaggerated. This has been done to try to get you to see where I'm coming from if you disagree. So I don't hate any of these artists; I just think their positions as gods of the music industry or the scene have not quite been deserved.

Taking Back Sunday - Yes, even Tell All Your Friends. I've always found them rather bland. Enjoyable here and there, yes, but when the single from your latest sounds like a ripoff of a band of an ex-member, you're digging kinda deep. Oh, and "Photograph" is dumb.

Green Day - This is personal preference, but I think Blink 182 were the fathers of pop-punk in a better way. They knew how to have fun. Green Day is serious, and so don't have as many excuses when they come off as stupid or pretentious.

John Mayer - Excellent guitarist, but his voice puts me to sleep, and his songs aren't great. "Your Body is a Wonderland" should just not exist.

NOFX - For music it is impossible to identify with due to a combination of immaturity, stupidity, and attitude, see NOFX. "Punk" was cool from the Dead Kennedys. This is "punk" dumbed down and pissed on.

Bayside - I will always be prejudiced against Bayside. I see them being compared to Alkaline Trio everywhere. Alkaline Trio are my favorite band, and I just can't see it. I find no hooks and little emotion in Bayside. There's nothing really to keep me coming back, and frankly songs such as "Duality" strike me as unimaginative.

I understand your opinion, for the most part, with the other bands, but this one does not make sense to me. When these two bands co-headlined the Pop Disaster Tour, Green Day were the better performers. They talked with the crowd, used super soakers, brought audience members onstage to play their instruments and they even brought out a few trumpet players in sombreros. When Blink 182 came on, they couldn't match what Green Day did. They blazed through a majority of the songs, even "Adam's Song," and hardly interacted with the crowd. I know this was only one night, but I believe that's how most of the tour went.

Another thing that's wrong with your point of view is that Green Day is serious, but that's really only been the past few years. Yes, "Good Riddance(Time of Your Life) is somber and "serious," but for the most part they were fun and entertaining (see: the video for "Walking Contradiction"). They don't need an excuse for being "stupid" since that's just how they are. As far as who's pretentious, I think the winner is Tom Delonge. Even when he was in Blink, Tom acted like they were the best band in the world.

It's funny to think about the differences 4 years in age make.

Panic! At The Disco - completely and utterly overrated Wentz-lovers. The album was good, but completely over-produced and they're over-saturating my musical world.

Linkin Park - I used to love this band, Hybrid Theory-era, but everything since has been crap and yet they are the critics' darlings. I just don't understand.

Taking Back Sunday - never loved them, except for that song Cute Without The E. Other than that, terrible fucking band and yet another band I don't understand what people see in them.

Copeland - try as i might, I can't get into this band. They sound like a band that listened to Saves The Day too much mixed with a Beatles influence.

The Grateful Dead - my wife loves them. i can't stand them.

Angels and Airwaves - seriously, why does anyone go to their shows? also, why does anyone buy their record? Horrible, horrible band. Bring back Blink.

as someone said before, just because you don't like a band or a band sucks doesn't mean they are overrated

how do bands like fall out boy and panic at the disco end up in one of these threads? does anyone really rate them highly? they are hugely popular but anyone with half a brain knows that they aren't out to make great, incredibly original, or progressive music. They are pop bands, and they are popular.

Saying a band like The Who is overrated, while im not sure i agree, at least makes sense since thy are commonly "rated" highly

and lastly, i agree with the above post. Brand New is one of the few bands that words growth and maturity should be used for legitimately.

better? i dont know on that one. i think as far as song writing talent between their sophomore and tertiary album they're about equal, i only like deja a little more because i like the style a little more. i think the reason for the new style is they're writing music to fit the mood of the lyrics, which is awesome and i love the new stuff and they still hold their position as my favorite band. but i liked deja a little more.

It's funny to think about the differences 4 years in age make.

If this means that your extra four years have given you the maturity to like Green Day, I say I'm fine at 15.

(And I grant you the seriousness of Green Day has only lasted a few years. This point doesn't matter, though, cause songs like "Longview" are so annoying that I think they sucked early on too.)

singyoutocoma
05/23/07, 06:29 PM
This thread is basically an excuse for idiots to bad mouth great bands.

Actually, I'm surprised. I thought more of the stuff in here would make me cringe. But other than The Clash, I haven't been shocked by anything in here. Popular bands have gotten ripped on, which will always happen. And Brand New has gotten a lot of undeserved mentions. But as for bands of the scene, I haven't seen bands like Jawbreaker, The Get Up Kids, etc. mentioned. Mostly it's just an excuse for ... *surprise* ... more people to say that Fall Out Boy suck.

you know....its those bands that have vintage shirts that people who have never listened to them wear on a day-to-day basis, hoping to pass for an "edge" or "rocker-ish" look--really, it only makes them look uber-conformist, and undermines the fans who really DO love the bands.

you didn't define overrated. you named three legendary bands, who still sell products to people of all ages. overrated means that many people like them and praise them, yet they're not as good as the hype. overrated and a fashion trend are not the same thing. and spell zeppelin right.

I expected to see them before now, but may I ask why you would say so?

to me it feels like they're trying too hard to be like Rites of Spring or even At the Drive-In. i hear everyone rave about their lyrical content but i really don't see much to be in a fuss about. they're good musicians making mediocre music, basically. the overproduced sound doesn't help either and i've never been a fan of that reverbed to hell, high pitched vocal style...but if i have to hear it i'd rather it come from Sunny Day Real Estate. i'm sure someone could defend them better than i can tell you why they're overrated. it boils down to me not liking what they're doing and not much more than that.

you didn't define overrated. you named three legendary bands, who still sell products to people of all ages. overrated means that many people like them and praise them, yet they're not as good as the hype. overrated and a fashion trend are not the same thing. and spell zeppelin right.

oh, and you named three of some of top influences in metal, rock, and punk.

lo siento, mr music expert.

sorry i got your panties all in a twist.
