if it doesn't come natural, don't do it. it'll look fake as hell.

just do what comes naturally.

i don't know how old you are, but a few drinks before going out on stage can help relax you so you don't feel so awkward. i'm not saying get smashed before you go out there, but a glass or two of wine or something.

or you could try some yoga or meditation type breathing exercises, those are great for relaxing

Just move how your music moves you. Don't try to act cool or interesting, that's just stupid.

its easier playing guitar and moving around than just plain singing and moving around. It does feel akward if youre just singing on stage and trying to move around.

move with your music honey. Ever seen Every Time I Die live? Keith is a good example of where to start. Dont try to move with it. Just let it happen, let the music move you. And dont forget to shake it.

hahahaha seriously

just do things that feel natural. who cares if something is weird. if it feels right doing it onstage then do it.

just don't be fake. people will make fun of you

Now it seems to weird to admit to this and I don't condone drugs or anything like that but to add to his point, when I fronted my old band like 2 years ago I was a coke addict and it really loosened me up. I'm an incredibly shy guy and I could do any of what I used to do on stage sober, I'd be scared shitless.

also, don't be afraid of what you sound like.

i would say watch some videos on you tube of some of your influences singer wise and see what they do, pick up things you like about them drop things you dont and incorporate that into your own style. it will really help your stage prescence

Practice in a mirror. But you should focus on vocals before moving.

just do what's natural. there's really no need to dance all around the stage or anything, it might mess up your singing.

Fuck around.
thats how i get by.
Have the drummer yell at you, like make you laugh and shit.
The first show i ever played, I got the singer so pissed off by just talking shit to him.
He blows though so it didn't matter. our guitarist just started laughing.
You just have to have a good time.
make it a party on stage.

Just be honest, and let the music take control of you. I'll tell you, I've seen some pretty unique stage presence of vocalists, but not once did I mock them in my head, because I could tell it was honest. People will remember you for it rather than trying to swing a mic like Lazzara.

lordofthefood1

mics are for singing, not swinging

Well people aren't looking to hear your music. People are looking for a show. So do whatever you have to do to give that to them, while remaining somewhat of a decent vocalist.

BE CAREFUL with that....I wouldn't reccomend studying other singers TOO heavily.
You want your style to be unique. Nothing screams "poser" like attempting your favorite rocker's signature moves.

I'd play off the crowd. Other people I've known prefer to act as if there's no one there and they're just alone with the music. Either way.

It helps to look for people in the crowd who are enjoying themselves. Assuming there are some. Sing to them. Give them a smile. They will love it and should boost your stage confidence. Also, closing your eyes and hitting every note will distract you from everything else, your body has a way of taking care of the rest.

Definitely concentrate on singing first. if a person sits there for 40 minutes and nails every single note, it can be just as mesmerizing as a dude flailing around. when you know every song back and forth and have the stamina to hit every note and run around do it. good way to practice is to run while singing. Outkast used to run miles while going over their raps so they could move and rap onstage.

After that, you have to not worry about how you look or what you do. just go up there and do your thing. always go with your impulses. Never be hesitant. if you have the urge to climb something, swing something around, just go for it. if you fall over, mess up, hit a band member.. just shrug it off and keep going. Just try not to care.

The best way to get into a not caring kind of mode is to be practiced enough to do your vocals in your sleep. when that becomes automatic, the floodgates open. Keep practicing and singing your ass off.

You have to talk to your band about it. Get them moving and then it will feel easier for you to move.

just jump around and get fuckin' PUMPED prior to getting on...jumping around and making high pitched squeels and cursing a lot usually gets me loose enough to do anything lol

my old band, none of us really ever moved around much at all because we just didn't "feel it", not to mention the bassist and I were both sorta shy people haha...and the only other person in the band aside from us was the drummer, and, well, he obviously didnt dance around haha.

but still, we had alot of people tell us we sounded really good and were cool to watch, despite that we never moved around.

so just do what you want, what comes natural, and dont force or fake anything.
hope this helps.

if you love the music you're playing, and you enjoy playing it, movement should come naturally. i love playing live with my band, and i don't move around consciously, its all natural. as far as i know.

The best thing to remember is that everyone in the audience envies you. They all want to be you, no matter what you sound like.

Dude just let it evolve naturally. When I first started I wouldn't really know where to look and stand all awkward like, and this was back in my hardcore band days. As you go along though you'll find what you're comfortable doing, movement that seem natural to you and you'll start enjoying yourself and on stage and then that'll transfer to the audience, and that's what ultimately makes you interesting man. In my town there were so many people who forced it and you could honestly tell. Alllllsooo, if you're going to drink to relax or whatever (great for small gigs when you're starting out) make sure you have lotsnlots of water, even with poifect technique your throat dries out so fast if you've been drinking.

Just stop caring what people think...I mean, go with your morals and such, but just don't care anymore....and get used to lots of people. A good place to start is to go to a local concert, and head straight for the front. Dance a little, or something. Have a blast. Live the feeling that the music give you. Know that you're making the band's day. Maybe even start a mosh pit. Talk to random people....and sometimes, taking a speach class helps. I'll stop writing you a book...but, if you have any questions, let me know...my reseme as a musician is pretty long, so, I promise I know what I'm talking about...and I love talking about this stuff!!

don't.

if there's anything quirky about what you do on stage, chances are as your band gets bigger people will start to like it--they'll see it as your trademark and respect it. or at least it will get overlooked. i mean think about max bemis, he sticks his tongue out when he sings, but that doesn't bother anyone, say anything still puts on a kick ass show and he still sings his heart out.

I think the best tips I can give you are:
Watch videos of everyone you can- get some ideas from there. don't blatantly ape someone else, but learn what things look good and don't. also, study to see what moves can be done while singing and what just won't work. motion is good, but if it makes you sound terrible, stop! even the most visually amazing band can disappoint if the sound is off.
that being said, also realize that you don't have to be flying around, flipping out to make a comelling show. it's just about expressing your emotions honestly.
don't be fake, and don't overdo it. just dance how you want to (or don't).
tape your performances. this way you can critique yourself.
