now that kazaa is being policed by the RIAA, is there another file sharing program that i can download songs without getting into legal trouble?

Kazaa lite is the same thing as kazaa, just without the ads and spyware. It's still connected to the same network, and it is also being policed by the RIAA. So its not really a solution to his problem.

But yea, just disable uploading.

disable the sharing but highlighting the file and clicking the share icon in the top left corner

you need to go to the "tools" menu on the toolbar and click "options..."

then, under "traffic", check the box marked "disable sharing of files with other kazaa media desktop users"
