View Full Version : Amazing Singers

inertiatic
05/12/07, 11:40 AM
In this area of musical passion it is heard to find a good lead singer or singers. I want to see what you believe to be good singers among certain genres of music.

I think that Cedric Bixler-Zavala of Mars Volta is amazing as is Toby and Devin from Emery. Listen to Emery's "The Weaks End" and tell me what you think if you have not heard it. I also think that Tim Kasher from Cursive is a good singer, but that is under a lot scrutiny by some of my friends.

Let me hear what you think about good singers and you can assess my own picks.

Depends on where you look.

Rufus Wainwright, Sam Beam, Neko Case and plenty others have great voices.

05/12/07, 11:47 AM
That is why I said genres as a plural. I have heard Rufus Wainwright and agree that he is a decent singer.

I was just not sure how to keep it from getting to broad. I realize that people would say that I should put it into genres, but someone would argue about me leaving a genre out and I don't care about that. I just want to get an idea for what people think is good when it comes to singers.

Frank Sinatra
Freddie Mercury
Thom Yorke
Liam Gallagher
Morrissey
Ben Folds guy
Robert Smith

are all time greats..

within the current scene

Daryl Palumbo - Glassjaw
Andrew MacMahon - Something Corporate
Jenny Lewis - Rilo Kiley
Jesse Lacey - Brand New
Jonsi - Sigur Ros
Chino Moreno - Deftones
Rivers Coumo - Weezer
Brandon Boyd - Incubus
Jeff Tweedy - Wilco

The Ben Folds guy would be Ben Folds.

Rivers Coumo has an excellent story. He was raised on an Ashram in Pomfret, CT by a famous Swami. He was born in NYC but moved when the Swami moved along with his family. I always that that was interesting.

I definitely forgot Jesse Lacey. Chino of Deftones is also amazing. I have seen them to many times to count. Brandon Boyd also a great pick.

How do you feel about Daryl Palumbo's abilities in Head Automatica? I think he is amazing even in that band.

For some of my all-time greats: Robert Plant, Joe Williams of Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Fats Domino, Otis Redding, Sinatra, Dean-O, and Glenn Danzig of the Misfits.

Yeah it is his name. He was my fourth grade teachers nephew. She always told us that so she could feel a sense of self-importance. I still thought she was a douche.

Liam Gallagher, Adam Duritz, and John Lennon are some i would consider all time best. out of today's scene, definitely Daryl Palumbo and Aaron Marsh. probaby Andrew McMahon and the dude from This Day & Age, too.

I can do whatever I please. My opinion is that Rufus is decent and the Jesse Lacey is great. Your opinion obviously differs and that is fine.

As far as amazing voices i'd probably go with Dallas Green and Will Pugh from Cartel

But other vocalists that really appeal to me that probably don't qualify as amazing are..

Stephen Jenkins - 3eb
Ryan Dominguez - Tokyo Rose
Anthony Green - Circa Survive

alyssa_k
05/12/07, 01:32 PM
Jason Gleason (ActionReaction, former-Further Seems Forever) and Jason Vena(Acceptance-RIP) also come to mind.

sweet as, ya've highlighted some sweet artists there. as me & devotion were saying above, the rx bandits are bloody good, i recon you'd enjoy them the resignation would be a sweet starting point. split enz tunes like 'i see red, shark attack, poor boy, i hope i never, history never repeats, dirty creature, etc might be right up your alley

also if you're into bob marley, toots & the maytals & the slackers might be off interest to ya (depending how much your into that style of things)

Contrary to popular belief, I'd say that Conor Oberst actually has an amazing voice. It is the shakiness and overall desperateness in his voice that makes it so good.
Others I'd consider would be:
Dustin Kensrue
Jim Adkins
Cedric Bixler-Zavala
Kenny Bridges
Claudio Sanchez
Jenny Lewis
John Nolan
Aaron Gillespie

As far as all-time greats, I'd have to go with Robert Plant.

mika is a queen poser because he tries to sound like freddie mercury and make unique music

that would make him a freddie poser, not a queen poser. are you saying he should give up trying to make unique music? he's just singing the way he sings, if his voice sounds like freddie mercury...that's just the way it sounds. doesn't make him a poser.

Mars Volta not so much... If you've seen them live your opinion will change but the guys from Emery are very good.

The best Live is hands down is Matthew Davies Lead singer of Funeral for a Friend. Best singer I've listened to live. If you get a chance see them they are one fantastic band to check out live

I had a live version of one of FFAF songs and didn't even realize it was live until I had already listened to it a few dozen times and noticed that during one of the courses Matt added something. I was shocked by how 'on' his vocals were.

People don't like him because of the "pop" style music that his CDs present him as. His voice is probably one of the best ever live that I've ever seen.

Another person I'd like to mention with an amazing voice, the singer for Melee. Saw them last night, I was like holy shit this guy can sing and his voice has the perfect rasp.

I prefer someone with a couple of imperfections in their voice. Much more intriguing than someone with a crystal clear tone.

Also, whoever said Matt Bellamy: good choice. He's a bit of an acquired taste, but he is damn good at what he does.

Imogen Heap I first came in here to say this.

EDIT: And why has no one suggested Feist yet?

She has this beautiful classic quality to her voice. I think she could sing the dictionary and I'd be into it. Her next solo cd is supposed to be out soon. I can't wait.

I hear about some of the guests on it, there were a couple I was a little thrown off by but it should be interesting none the less. I don't think it is possible for that woman to make bad music.

I know. Her voice is so tantalizing to my ears though, she could be singing death threats and i would still love it.

She would make death threats sound hot. I was listening to Under The Blacklight a little while ago. I am impressed by that cd more and more everytime I hear it. It's a shame cause I have a feeling Rilo Kiley will be no more sometime in the near futer.

yeah but if the band breaks up it will make me very very sad. She and Blake Sennett have a killer chemistry as both songwriters and vocalists. It would be sad to know that there isnt any more new material coming out of that.

But I agree about the solo stuff. She is truely amazing on her own.
