View Full Version : Population Growth

sigh
08/16/03, 12:12 AM
This is what I read:
it took the human race 125 million years to reach 1 billion in population.
It took only 123 years to go from 1billion- 2 billion
33 years from 2- 3 billion
14 from 3-4 billion
13 from 4-5 billlion
and 12 from 5-6 bllion
Our population is predicted to double by the next generation.

Thoughts? Comments?

medical technology has improved to the point where it might actually be hurting people in general, there are diseases that should act as natural poplulation controls, but don't because we've discovered ways to cure them. people are living longer, and living through accidents and other things that normally should have killed them. so population growth is going to become a serious problem quickly, since there is only a fixed amount of space and resources to go around.

I blame the catholic church for playing a role in this. Now I understand in China and India the Catholic church has little/no impact at all. But in Central American countries where people are literally starving the church is largely at fault. The church teaches that birth control is wrong and ecourages big families as a result of it. The problem is that in a small poor starving country more population means more poverty. The problem is that the Catholic church is incredibly irresponsible. They have the ability to alter their teachings to allow birth control between married couples. This makes the number of children had go down dramatically and helps to at least stop the level of poverty at its current position. But instead the Catholic church holds themselves to some higher standard and if their teachings mean that people in central american countries are going to be worse off, that's fine. The Catholic church may be the most irresponsible and neglectful institution ever created through the history of mankind. They have had more scandal and treachery committed since their inception than any other country or even people. God is still going to be God no matter whose house you praise him in. That's why I will never again praise God in a Catholic church.

Neither of you understand Catholic Missionary work, Catholics, or Catholic evangelism.

Oh contrare. Having gone to a catholic school before and having been a part of the church and their classes for most of my lfie I have strong understanding. While the church does do a lot of good it is still corrupt and still irresponsible. I quite going to Catholic high school in the beginning of the first semester (fifth day) of freshman year because of this. I was shown a video by a nun who had gone to help with missionary work in Africa to help with AIDS. During the video a part came up where the people were being briefed. The owman doing the briefing claimed the Africans had been duped into using condoms. This is a continent where AIDS is prevelant and they are attempting to prevent the spread and the Catholic church is being counter-productive by telling these people not to use the condoms. That is irresponsible and moreover just wrong. I don't give a damn about all the good they're doing, there teachings are doing bad as well. If they weren't still condemning birth control a lot of the missionary work done in Central America would be needless, because population would begin to get back under control. You can't tell a strongly catholic part of the world that is already impovershed that birth control is wrong and that they should have big families. It's just wrong.

while i'm sure they do their share of good, it doesn't change the evils and scandals commited by the catholic church over the centuries. nor does it help with population growth.

Catholic missionaries wouldn't tell them not to use birth control, they'd tell them not to have sex.

and you should just remember how all of those Catholics in Central America are risking their lives to help these people. They arn't just going over there and preaching. Thats not how Catholics convert people. Its through their behavior that they spread Christ's message.
These people are down their building/repairing houses, serving meals, reading and playing with children, housing wanted innocents ect. They spend so much time just trying to counter the effects of the SOA graduates.

Don't get me wrong, if missionaries, even if it is a small few, are doing what you say they are doing, then thats horribly wrong. I disagree with a lot of the issues the Church's heirarchy advocates. But I understand that there are plenty of good catholic people doing work for the church in foreign countries and they deserve more respect than they are getting. And it pisses me off that a few stupid Catholics are behaving in a very unCatholic way, and that people are watching them and then condeming the entire Church for it.

I understand there are good people in the church. That goes without saying, and overall the message of the church is generally very good and respectable. But in certain areas the church's teachings are archaic and irresponsible and that needs to be addressed.

I really think there are a lot of messed up things in the world regarding population. People in America, they have usually 2-4 kids tops. And that is understandable. Because its hard to support an enourmous family even in a country with one of the greatest economys worldwide.

But then you have Africa and the Middle East were families normally have 20 kids per family. Thats fucking ridiculous. Those families can't even support themselves without kids and then they have 5 or more kids? What the fuck? There are no resources in Africa at all that are neccesary(sp?) for human survival, they can't grow shit in the soil and they have natural disasters every other day.

alot of those families are large so that they will have more help when it comes to growing crops and cattle and stuff like that where you need a lot of labor.

you do know that a family of 4 in the usa, is far more destructive on the planet, then a family of 10 in africa or southern asia........

thats what i meant exactly, nice. because, a family of 4 here, may use hundreds of times more resources, but will not cause the starvation, and economic destruction that it will over there.

most of the people in third world countries are farmers and they don't have acssess to modern technology to farm there land so large families are needed so that they don't starve and have the ability to remotely ink out a living.........

yeah i agree with what most of you are saying.

i also think the catholic church is so fucking stupid for teaching people that birth control is bad. yeah, god says that condoms are evil. he wants you to get AIDS and have 10 kids who will starve and die.

and yes its true that our medical knowledge is definetly contributing to overpopulation. sad huh?

though i feel bad for people in poverty, some of them are retarded, because they keep having children who live the same shitty life they do. hello! correct me if I'm wrong, but um common sense?!

just wanted to repeat what all u smart people said in my words lol

well i somewhat agree and disagree. because the catholic church is not teaching people to get AIDS. they are giving out the most proven knowledge there is, to avoid getting sexually transmitted diseases, don't have sex. condoms are a great invention and i do think that the should be mass exported but a broken condom can be a bummer.
