View Full Version : Songs that go on and on after they 'end'

I love these.
Examples:
Jimmy Eat World - Goodbye Sky Harbor
Death Cab For Cutie - Stability
Midtown - So Long As We Keep Our Bodies Numb, We're Safe
you guys got any more?
What I'm talking about is...just a simple melody or lyric or something will repeat on and on for at least like 5 minutes after the real song stops.

Haha, I usually skip to the next song after those. And those songs with like minutes of silence after them? Irritating.
Hmm. For music, the bonus track from The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus' Don't You Fake It comes to mind. There's at least two times in the song that you think it's about to end and it just continues, nevermind that you had to wait through 2 minutes of silence after Your Guardian Angel to get to it anyway. xD; Good song nevertheless.
Konstantine from Songs for Silent Movies by Something Corporate is kinda like that too. A 9 minute song. Pretty, though.
And for silence, A Modern Myth off 30 Seconds to Mars' A Beautiful Lie. About 2 and a half minutes of a decent song, then around 1o minutes of silence before there's another minute and a half of music. Crazy, I tell you.

I think the opening track on the new Wildhearts album takes it. It should end around the 3-minute mark, but they manage to drag it out for an extra 6 minutes of riffs and solos. Why are they trying so hard to recreate their early albums? :(

"the sun and the moon" by mae and "good to know that if i ever need attention all i have to do is die" are great ones. i wish "stay together for the kids" by blink would have a longer ending, with the piano improv and everything.

Bad Religion - "Bored and Extremely Dangerous"
I know it's not what you're looking for, really, but it does "end" and then there's silence that builds into an array of sound effects, before the song picks up again.

I know these examples aren't really what you were talking about, but on a handful of songs on The Execution of All Things by Rilo Kiley after the real song stops, Jenny just begins to sing these odd stories from the view of a little girl.
I was going to say Limousine and Good To Know... by Brand New, but those have already been said. I think you could also consider Jesus though.

Hey Jude - the Beatles
Great song, with a melody that repeats over and over untitl the actual end.
Although, I get a little tired of it some times. It's not like JEW's "Goodbye Sky Harbour" which I can listen to without getting sick of the repitition.

You love Brand New too much, there are better lyricists out there.
True. Brand New are good, but there are better lyricists. For example; Bob Dylan. or, Bruce Springsteen.
Again, I like Brand New and all, but I get tired of it when people go on about how BN are god.
One time at a concert my old band was playing at, this really generic crappy emo band was playing there, and the singer asked the crowd if "anyone had a copy of Your Favorite Weapon" He said something to the extent of "You know, the album that set the bar lyrically for every band around today..."

Ok, I see. The only time I do listen to that song is either on my stereo or my computer/iTunes, since I rarely have 16+ free minutes whenever I'm using my portable Cd player. But once I did listen to that song on my CD player on a really really long car ride a couple spring breaks ago. That one, and Midtown's "So Long as We Keep Our Bodies Numb...." surprisingly, my battery life was still good afterwards.

Well, when you first get one, it comes with a fully charged, operational battery. And, it recharges whenever you plug it into your computer. However, the battery only lasts so long, and can only be recharged so many times (depending on how often you use it)
...so after about a year, maybe a little more, it's pretty much dead.
Aside from all that, iPods are actually pretty nice. I havent tried Microsoft's bid in that market yet (Zune) but I hear they're just about the same, as far as reliability goes.

I listen to my old sony discman a lot, and i get the longer life batteries. The ones that have all the probably useless buzzword titles. "Lithium", "Gold", "Titanium" etc, haha. They last a hell of a long time in mine :-) Before i was getting like 4-5 hours off a normal "super heavy duty" or whatever. But with those others, i easily get 30+ hours.

Okay, well if it's heavy duty, or super heavy duty, the Energizer Lithium, and Duracell Ultra or Eveready Gold will give you probably 3-4 times the battery life that those others give you. You probably won't get 30 hours like me, because it depends on your player, but it'll give you 3-4 times whatever yours gets on normal batteries, easily :-)

Ipod's are the best mp3 as Itunes is the best software i have come across for mp3 players.
i love ipods, but hate everything to do with itunes.
i just have a cheap creative muvo right now, but on one aaa battery i get about 16 hours of play back. sure it only holds about 300 songs, but i never use it for anything besides the 15 minute walks to classes so its perfect for me.

I have had quite a bit of trouble with my iPod actually, but I still love it. It's evolved into a love/hate relationship between us. It breaks occasionally still and I slam it on my knee and fix it Fonzie style. I'm not complaining though and I'm not saying don't buy one, but if you do be careful with it.
iTunes owns and that's really all that needs to be said about it.
Yeah, i have a 20 gig Sony Walkman mp3 player (And i love it. Way more reliable than an iPod, cheaper, and way less fragile), and the Sony Connect software it uses to put mp3s on it is absolutely awful. Very slow, and it errors and shuts itself down a lot. My brother has an iPod Shuffle, and it's so much easier using iTunes to load stuff onto that. I wish iTunes was made compatible with other mp3 players. There used to be a program that could make iTunes compatible with any player, but it's been taken off it's website (maybe due to being sued?).

I had to send my iPod in for a new battery and luckily for me (or not, you decide) it was within the first year and the warranty covered it. So I'd say if your one year warranty is still good, get a new battery. At least then when you do sell it, you can get a little more for it by saying "IT HAS A BRAND NEW BATTERY!"

Yeah, mp3 players seem to be more reliable, but iPod/iTunes is so much easier to use. iTunes is also really well organized, and all that. The old mp3 player I had, you had to plug it in, create a folder inside in on your computer, and copy all your music files into that folder, which took ages. Plus, lots of errors, as you said. But with iTunes, I just plug in my iPod, tell it to update any new stuff, and its good to go.
Of course, I have two friends who firmly believe that anything Mac is shit, and worthless. In their opnion, iPods just suck all the way haha. But it's not like Microsoft is God either. It has its share of errors and problems. Hell, I think those Mac/PC commericals are hilarious, as are all the imitations/spoof commercials on YouTube haha.

I agree. I think that the iTunes/iPod set up is so easy and organized and that's why I love it so much.
As for the Macs, I'm hopefully getting a Macbook within the month so we'll see how that goes. Eventually I'd like to get one of the 8 gig nanos or depending on whatever, a video iPod.

Very much so. They keep improving it as well. My only complaint is that when purchasing from the ITues store, you cant play the songs on other computers unless you "authorize" it. Which isnt a real big deal I guess, but my friend gave me a DATA disc with a ton of mp3s on it, and alof the best songs were ones he got off iTunes, and he forgot all about the authoization thing I guess, when he burnt it. So when I asked him, he had forgotten his password and all that. So I never got them to work haha.
Other than that, iTunes is great.

This may make me a geek or what have you, but I do not care. The day my mac books comes in the mail will be the happiest day of my life.
Haha, small word, yeah? interesting. I wonder how often this happens to other people haha....
And Im still deciding on whether or not I want to invest in a Macbook. I hear alot of good words, but other than that, I dont know that much about them.
But it would be funny to see my two Mac-hating friends' reactions at me purchasing a Mac hahaha.
Maybe I'll get one now, for that very reason haha.

Well that would be one good reason to buy a mac book. If you don't make up your mind for a while yet I'll tell you how I like mine once I get it.
