Wow. Just watched it, after hearing so much about it. I never thought an exploitation film could be done so well. It really actually made you think, though I'm sure a lot of people will write it off as pure garbage.
The real animal execution scenes were hard to watch, but I was surprised by the fact that 90% of it was done by the white explorers.
Anyone else seen this? Thoughts?
http://imdb.com/title/tt0078935/ for info if you don't know what I'm talking about.
http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/film/91 for a review.

also, Ruggero Deodato, the original director of the movie is making plans to remake the film and it's currently slated for a 2009 release. I'm interested on whither or not this will ever happen, and if it would ever get a major release.

Haha a remake? Now I've heard everything.

yeah...although I'm not sure if it's a remake or a sequel...

Edit: I guess it's a sequel, here's part of an interview he did with Bloody-Disgusting .

While in Prague on the set of HOSTEL: PART II Ruggero tells Bloody-Disgusting exclusively that he already has the idea for CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST 2, which he will now both write and direct. He tells us that on set Eli [Roth] gave him the courage and strength to do it and to go on with the project.

Originally he had put aside the job as director because he was afraid that the sequel would be too strong and raw for American audiences. After watching HOSTEL he now sees that the audience has taste for these type of films. He reallly likes how Eli shoots his movies and feels that they are very similar.

When asked about the story and when it might be shot he explained, "[I have] something in my mind... something written... [but] for now, silence," he continues, "I talked with Eli and Eli said 'yes, I like' ."

In the original an NYU professor discovers the true nature and intent of lost film makers, who were making a documentary on primitive cannibal tribes, when he returns from the Amazon with their footage.

Ruggero was arrested after the release in 1980 and questioned by police who thought the film was real.

im afraid to watch this becuase of the real death animal scenes. its easier to watch a person die then an animal. i dont know why, but it truly is, and in this flick its real.....

"Man is omnipotent; nothing is impossible for him. What seemed like unthinkable undertakings yesterday are history today. The conquest of the moon for example: who really talks about it anymore? Today we are already on the threshold of conquering our galaxy, and in a not too distant tomorrow, we'll be considering the conquest of the universe, and yet man seems to ignore the fact that on this very planet there are still people living in the stone age and practicing cannibalism."

wow. thats some good shit.

Man's inhumanity towards man, maybe? It's worth watching if you can stomach it...

That's too bad. It's a classic.

What do you mean same vein? Like cannibal stuff, or realistic stuff?

Either/or. I've heard some good things about Cannibal Ferox. Just any good obscure horror.

It just doesn't seem like my kind of film. I am not one to get offended by cinema and I am 100% against censorship, but watching animals get slaughtered isn't my cup of tea.

Bug looks amazing. I love the story and know Friedkin will direct the shit out of it. My only worry was the acting and all the reviews I've read have raved about it so I'm stoked.

As for films in the same vein as CH. You could go with Cannibal Ferox or Men Behind the Sun. Salo isn't really in the same vein unless you are looking simply for sick films. Emanuelle in America is a funny little film if you like sick, twisted and alot of nudity. If you clarify what you mean by "in the same vein" I can hook you up with more.

Understandable. See Cannibal Ferox if the genre interests you. It's not as good but its a tad more violent... (and no real animal deaths).

"Behind The Sun" and "Salo" are horrific, and I didn't find either to actually be good films aside from the 'revolting' factor.

Oh man, I thought Men Behind the Sun had a great message to it. Salo on the other hand is garbage.

I know it's not gory or horrifying but has anyone seen Funny Games? I thought it was a clever horror movie.

Terrible acting and fucking boring and shitty movie. Plus it wasn't even very shocking and the only part that bothered me was the native fucking his wife with a rock and when they killed the monkey/rat looking thing . The only part I really liked was the gnarly turtle scenethat was the only part of the movie that made me cringe

Funny Games was fine for what it was, if you've seen the original then you knew what to expect...the same thing

EDIT: How did Funny Games get brought up in a thread for Cannibal Holocaust? I thought I was in the horror thread for a minute.

legendary film, saw it for the first time last month. thought it had a great message to it, and somewhat anti-american from what i took from it. but i could be wrong.

Since this thread is still here, thought I'd say that I saw it Sunday for the first time and absolutely loved it. I thought that not only was it a fantastic exploitation film, but it did an amazing job breaking the barriers between just a movie and real life. I disliked and disagreed with killing the animals, but by doing that, it made the rape scenes and killing scenes that much harder to watch, because I couldn't help but think that since the animals were real, what's stopping them from making the other stuff real.

Very hard to watch at some times, but a very good movie.
