View Full Version : Most Influencial New Jersey/Long Island Band
Poll closed, however I'm considering that if a band gets more votes than the ones I've moved on to the next round then they could be a wild card in the last round..
-You can leave a comment if you think thats a good idea
-But for now see the Round 2 poll to pick a band for the last round!

I picked glassjaw, although you can definitely say its between them or Thursday.. Brand New is a great band, but if you ask any of them, they will say that it would be the Movielife or glassjaw..

this was really hard considering theyre all my favorite bands...
but i voted saves the day for most influential

why wasnt lifetime on there?
lifetime should definately be up there. they are definately the most influential band from that area. no lifetime means taking back sunday, saves the day, new found glory, fall out boy and half the other bands this website covers would sound very different.
from that list though i chose tbs as they really made the whole "emo" scene breakthrough and become big.

At the end of the day, TBS. Their mainstream success definitely helps in that.

The Early November is my favorite, but Saves The Day is definitely the most influential.

The only reason I left Lifetime out was because I was planning on making this into a Round kinda of a thing with the top 5 or so bands going on to the next round and then winding it down and I thought Lifetime should be automatic for the next round based on how long they've been around.
And I know its hard to choose between 2 or 3 of these but flip a coin or something and most likely the other one you want will go on to the next round...

I'd say Saves The Day or The Early November... (saves the day got my vote)

Damn...total toss-up between Glassjaw, Thursday, Saves the Day, and TBS. (Yes, TBS. Just because they suck now, doesn't mean that their first album wasn't a positive experience for most of us.)
In the end, I went with Thursday. I guess they probably had the biggest influence on the screamo genre. (And I don't give a fuck whether you like screamo or not, so please don't reply with that shit.)
As for the Early November...though they were good, I don't see an influence from their music comparable to the four bands I named, so I'd be interested in hearing some justification.
Oh, and Lifetime should definitely be on there if The Number 12 Looks Like You is.

Lifetime is automatically in the 2nd Round when I narrow this down. And I agree that TEN isn't very influential at the moment but who knows what future band memebers will be saying in interviews that the reason they got into music was because of an Early November concert they went to or whatever, its possible.
A lot of people on this site alone adore TEN and whose to say they won't potentially be in a future band that blows up.

I could put Misfits in the next round but I don't know how many people from this site would actually vote for them. I agree they are influential and if I had my choice I'd say they are but I don't know how many people here would vote for them

I voted for Saves The Day. I just started listening to Lifetime though, and I can definetly see how Saves The Day would draw influence from them. As far as being all around the best out of that list, I would probably have to go with Brand New, but they aren't influential enough to get my vote. Nice poll I might add...

Brand New are great, but I can't say I've seen their "influence" alot in other bands. I would've voted Saves The Day if I hadn't seen so many bands try to recreate Tell All Your Friends.
Yeah, nice poll. Interesting replies.

Not to start anything but when I have read interviews of these bands on who influenced them most of the time you hear Lifetime, STD and the newer bands say Thursday, TBS, Moveilfe, and even Glassjaw, but I haven't seen any particular bands mention Bouncing Souls.

This thread is a complete joke! How can you have a thread about most influential Jersey band and not have The Bouncing Souls. The Bouncing Souls arguably are the best punk band of the last decade and I'm sure a majority of the bands listed here were influenced by The Souls. This thread is equivalent to saying who is the most influential bay area band and not have Op Ivy, Dead Kennedy's, or Rancid.

I voted Saves the day, because they deserve it in my opinion... but thought about it more and..well..
How many fucking bands have tried to copy the sound of "Tell all your Friends"?.. TBS influenced most of the bands around today with that album. So anyway, it's a close race for me.
Goodbye Forever
05/22/07, 06:04 PM
Yeah, The Bouncing Souls influenced no one important... Except, you know, Lifetime. The Bouncing Souls were the band responsible for making something out of the New Brunswick underground punk rock scene in the late eighties, which ultimately led to to bands such as Lifetime. But whatever.
You guys can continue the discussion in the Round 2 thread because this poll is now closed even though you can still vote.
And I'm considering doing a wild card pick from this thread so you can continue to use this thread poll or you can vote for another band by posting a comment (such as the bouncing souls) and I'll consider it for the next round.

glassjaw cuz i believe that they pretty much pioneered the "screamo" wave thats taken over.and they still are the most orignal and best

TBS. Best? Favorite? Those are different questions, with different answers. Influence, hands down, look at the spawn TBS have created. Influence is not just what big bands copied a sound, it's how many bands copied a sound. Glassjaw surely influenced almost everyone on that list. But TBS has influenced almost everyone not on that list. My $0.02

Though they're not the best, thursday is clearly the most influential, then glassjaw

uhhh.... silent majority? glassjaw wouldn't exist if it wasn't for silent majority. and indecision (who became most precious blood) is from brooklyn, and they had a good deal of influence in all of this hardcore that's sprouted up. And there's a ton of bands that get the shaft, but are far more influential. milhouse, inside, kill your idols...
and this is strictly JUST long island/new jersey? what about new york city and shit? i mean, the ramones, obviously. but, come on, the gorilla biscuits? agnostic front? sick of it all?
and those are just the bands in the "scene". Velvet Underground was from NYC, and they were of cult status, almost. The Talking Heads, The New York Dolls, Blondie...

For me.. GlassJAw...
But it wouldn't have been..
No marks for you for not including The Movielife. Shameful
Most influential for everyone.. I'd say GlassJAw / Thursday / Saves The Day
I was hoping TEN would atleast get more votes than Midtown, wtf is up with that.
God New Jersey is sick. Glad to see someone beating Brand New, its like watching the Yankees lose.
