The artwork for Smashing Pumpkins (http://www.smashingpumpkin.com) new album (http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id= 1003585592) can be seen here (http://www.billboard.com/billboard/photos/daily/2007/smashing_pumpkins_cover_l.gif).
"I think global warming is an issue that is currently relevant, time sensitive, and a symptom of the shortsightedness of the U.S.," Fairey says. "As a broader metaphor, the drowning Statue of Liberty, a revered icon of the U.S., symbolizes the eminent demise of many of the ideals upon which the nation was founded. Civil liberties, freedom of speech, privacy, etc. have been decreasing since 9/11. The sun in the image could either be setting or rising and this ambiguity shows that there is still hope to turn things around."

That cover sucks. They should rename themselves the half assed pumpkins. I am so disappointed in how they have handled everything.

Zeitgeist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeitgeist) is originally a German expression that means "the spirit (Geist) of the time (Zeit)". It denotes the intellectual and cultural climate of an era.

Please explain?

Well for starters he could be referring to the fact it's not even the Smashing Pumpkins it's Corgan and Chamberlin and that's it.

I'm glad Fairey took the time to explain all of the symbolism in the image. God forbid anyone look at it for 2 seconds and come up with their own interpretations.

Still, it's better than some album covers I've seen lately - wink wink!!

the pumpkins have always been political.
"despite of my rage, i am still just a rat in a cage"
it could be argued that this is one of the most popular lines of any of their songs.
a lot of corgans lyrics are environmentally and socially aware.
it's pretty evident.

anyone could have come up with better artwork than that. I'm by no means a good artist, but I could definitely come up with something better. Something that at least works with all their other imagery. this is SO out of no where. I'm a firm believer of music equals art, so having bad art associated to something I love is saddening.

i've said it once and i'll say it again: if you are one of these people who cite "corgan and chamberlin" as ammunition against this being the "real" pumpkins, stop pretending to know anything about the pumpkins. stop pretending to know anything about anything. stop being an elitist when you don't know anything about the pumpkins that you didn't remember from your best pal wikipedia. and don't make me post what i already posted in the last pumpkins thread when people started talking down the "real" pumpkins.

I'm not trying to be an "elitist" at all, I'm just extremely disappointed the full line up isn't back. This isn't really a reunion at all, Corgan and Chamberlin never left each others sides, they were in Zwan together and Chamberlin worked on Corgan's solo album with him. When Corgan announced this, he made it seem like the band was back not just a few of them but all of them. I don't see what the hell you're freaking out about anyway. The funny thing is you're the one coming off as an elitist here.

ehh i just hate when people don't credit corgan and chamberlin as being a legitimate line-up. darcy and james didn't contribute anything to the pumpkins' sound and i get angry when people equate "no chick and no asian guy" to "no pumpkins." i'm not saying that that is what you're doing, but that is what is often done. they did hype it up as a reunion, but corgan is the only artistic and creative force behind the pumpkins with chamberlin a distant second. so many people are writing this off as zwan 2 because it isn't the original line-up and i don't think it's fair to the pumpkins that they get shrugged off so badly on this site because of that, despite the fact that they have been so influential to the bands and artists you read about here.
so sorry for flipping out but i'm so used to seeing unprovoked pumpkins hate on this site and i think that that's a shame. you're right about this not being much of a reunion. my bad.
